Aston at Papakea Resort
3543 Lower Honoapiilani Rd

The 364-room mid-range Aston at Papakea Resort is a relaxed ocean-view condo complex on 13 acres of lush grounds with a rock sea wall. Dolphins, seals, and other wildlife can be seen right off the property. There’s no on-site restaurant, but guests may dine at the companion property next door. Apartments vary in decor and amenities because they're independently owned, but all have balconies and full kitchens, and most have views of the water.

Ho'oilo House
138 Awaiku St

With just six rooms arranged around a beautiful common area that’s all decked out in lavish Balinese-style decor, this is about as opposite of a generic mega-resort as you can get. This adult-only bed-and-breakfast offers an intimate, romantic alternative to busy chain hotels. Although amenities are limited to a great continental breakfast and a small, lovely pool, the experience here less about action and more about relaxing and enjoying the great views of the ocean below (though note there is no beach here). This is the only upscale bed-and-breakfast in Lahaina; the Maui Guest House is also intimate but not nearly as luxe.

Ka'anapali Beach Hotel
2525 Kaanapali Parkway

The 432-room mid-range Ka’anapali Beach Hotel is the embodiment of Hawaiian tradition and the Aloha spirit. With regular Hawaiian entertainment and free activities like lei making and Hularobics, it harkens back to an earlier time for Maui resorts. Though it’s not as updated as and lacks some of the features of nearby resorts like the Sheraton, its more affordable rates make this a decent value option for the excellent beachfront location on the beautiful golden sands of Ka’anapali beach.

Aston at The Whaler on Kaanapali Beach
2481 Kaanapali Parkway

It's all about location at this 360-room condo-hotel on prime Kaanapali beachfront where inconsistent rooms range from luxe to dowdy, amenities are few and forgettable, and prices are steep. At least the fully equipped kitchens help take the sting out of Maui's otherwise expensive dining.

Montage Kapalua Bay
1 Bay Dr

The Montage Kapalua Bay is a lush 24-acre luxury property that features 56 one- to four-bedroom villas and a world-class spa. The spa itself is on five acres with an infinity pool and hydrotherapy treatment rooms. This beautiful oceanfront location in Kapalua is situated on a point with dramatic ocean cliffs on one side and a lovely crescent-shaped beach on the other. Three restaurants, two bars, and an excellent, multi-level pool complex are spread across the expansive property, which can take some time to walk across. The excellent villas have gourmet kitchens and spacious lanais, many with great ocean views. It's far more intimate than the nearby Ritz-Carlton, which lacks the kitchens found here.

Maui Guest House
1620 Ainakea Rd

This charming four-room guest house offers a refreshing change of pace from the big, commercial resorts found elsewhere in Lahaina. The tiny property includes a small pool, a sundeck with games, and an airy communal living room and kitchen; the beach is about a 10-minute walk away. The daily breakfast spread is a place to make friends, but the rooms are all separate and quiet -- and each comes with a private hot tub. There aren't many properties of this type in the area; the Ho'oilo House is also intimate with only six rooms, but it's more upscale and expensive.

Kahana Falls
4260 Lower Honoapiilani Rd

This mid-range property offers a good variety of amenities for a condo resort -- including a nice free-form pool, hot tubs, and a decent fitness center and game room. However, the buildings and interiors are showing signs of age. Another drawback is the location across the street from the beach, so while it’s only a short five-minute walk to the shore, there are very limited ocean views from the condos. This budget-friendly option does offer an attractive price tag for the Lahaina area, if you don’t mind that some of the units are very small and furnishings are dated. For condos right on the beach (typically at slightly higher rates), consider Aston Maui Kaanapali Villas or Lahaina Shores Beach Resort.

Napili Point Resort
5295 Lower Honoapiilani Rd

This 115-unit mid-range condo hotel is located on a small cove that some refer to as Turtle Bay, because – you guessed it – it's known to be a popular spot among sea turtles, making for some of the best snorkeling in the area. The property also boasts amazing ocean views from every unit, and is just a five-minute walk to a lovely beach. The one- and two-bedroom condos have fully equipped kitchens and nice seating on breezy lanais, though some units enjoy newer appliances and more updates than others. Those who want to be right on the beach should consider the nearby Napili Surf Beach Resort, but should note that not all of its condos have ocean views.

Noelani Condominium Resort
4095L Lower Honoapiilani Rd

The highlight of this mid-range condo resort is its prime oceanfront real estate, giving every unit great panoramic ocean views from comfortable private lanais. And with just 44 units, the Noelani Condominium Resort maintains a friendly, family-oriented vibe where guests mingle by the two pools and hot tub for the weekly live music and great sunsets. The condos have fully equipped kitchens (if dated bedding), and while the beach next door is tiny, there are more beach options within a short walk or drive. For a condo resort on a better beach, consider the nearby Sands of Kahana.

Sands of Kahana
4299 Lower Honoapiilani Rd

The Sands of Kahana, a mid-share timeshare property, may be too far afield for some travelers, but its stretch of beach is uncrowded. The older units vary widely in amenities -- many do not have air-conditioning and not all have ocean views. All the condos have full kitchens, and there's an an open-air bar/restaurant on-site. Tennis courts and a putting green distinguish the outdoor activities here from similar vacation rentals in the area, but a car is needed to get get to local attractions and more dining choices.
