Caribe Cove Resort Orlando
9000 Treasure Trove Ln

Caribe Cove Resort Orlando is a straightforward condo complex a few minutes from highway 12, within easy driving distance of most of Orlando's main tourist attractions. Flanked by forest and lakes (with resident alligators), the area is peaceful and surrounded by plenty of local flora and fauna. The 76 individually owned units, which have terraces or balconies, are spacious and generally well-maintained, and include fully equipped kitchens, but decor and quality of the furniture can vary. Shared facilities include a heated outdoor pool, sauna, and steam room. Travelers seeking a hotel with more kid-friendly amenities might want to check out the nearby Liki Tiki Village.

Legacy Vacation Resorts
2800 N Poinciana Blvd

Legacy Vacation Resorts is a mid-range property with a fresh and well-kept feel, but guests should specifically request suites in the main campus for the best quality for their money. Perks include being just 20 minutes from the theme parks while still having access to nice on-site amenities -- including three pools and a mini-golf course. Rooms are spacious and clean, with flat-screen TVs, but lack privacy due to thin walls and door gaps. Guests should beware of the timeshare presentations that many feel can be annoyingly pushy. A comparable resort is the Wyndham Cypress Palms just a few minutes west, with similar pricing but fewer amenities.

Grand Orlando Resort at Celebration
2900 Parkway Boulevard

This upper-middle-range hotel has 718 stylishly (although somewhat generically) decorated suites, with flat-screen TVs, marble shower/tub combos, and colorful design touches. However, rooms are on the small side and lack full kitchens, but there are a few dining and drinking options on the property. On-site amenities appeal to both families and business travelers. There are two large outdoor pools with a children's pool -- some guests may find the pool area a bit overrun with kids. The business center has several desktop computers, and the convention space and wedding gazebo make the hotel appropriate for larger events. Although the property is not officially affiliated with Orlando-area theme parks, the free shuttle makes it easy to access Walt Disney World without the hassle of parking. Overall, room rates are comparable with other area hotels.

Parkway International Resort
6200 Safari Trl

This 144-unit condo resort is ideal for guests seeking a mid-range property that caters to families. The on-site restaurant and eateries within walking distance are convenient, but families looking to take advantage of the full kitchens will need their own transportation to the supermarket, as there isn’t one within walking distance. The nature walk and swimming pool -- with kids' wading area -- are nice touches, along with the tiki-style poolside restaurant. While rooms are clean and comfortable, the slightly jungle-tinged decor could use an update. That said, room rates are a good value for the area, especially considering each unit sleeps up to six people.

Embassy Suites by Hilton Orlando Lake Buena Vista South
4955 Kyngs Heath Rd

The Embassy Suites is a 300-room, mid-range, family-friendly hotel near the theme parks in Orlando. Freebies include breakfast and evening happy hour, but not Wi-Fi in the rooms. The best rooms have views of Walt Disney World's Epcot and the nightly fireworks show.

Flamingo Waterpark Resort
2261 E Irlo Bronson Memorial Hwy

The Flamingo Waterpark Resort is a mid-range property offering outdoor activities meant for the whole family to enjoy. There's a kiddie pool and playground, daily outdoor kids' activities, and the coup de grace, an on-site water park complete with a lazy river and water slide. There are some amenities within the hotel for business travelers -- such as a meeting room and computer area. However, the rooms are in need of an upgrade and cleanliness is an issue. What's more, there are extra fees to use the water park, daily resort fees, and spotty Wi-Fi. There are no other hotels within a few miles of the resort, but for the same price, guests can stay closer to the parks on International Drive -- although the area is more hectic and congested since it is a high tourist area.

Galleria Palms Hotel
3000 Maingate Ln

Conveniently located near Disney World, Galleria Palms is a mid-range hotel with 118 clean, modern rooms with mini-fridges, microwaves, and coffeemakers. There aren’t many amenities or much style, but prices are typically low for this category and most guests simply use the hotel as a home base from which to explore the area theme parks. Features are nothing special, and include a small fitness center, outdoor pool, and free breakfast of hot and cold items. The free attraction shuttle can get crowded, and the breakfast a bit repetitive. Families looking for more outdoor amenities may want to check out Liki Tiki Village, a large resort with a children's lagoon with water slides, and a mini-golf course.

The Berkley, Orlando
8545 W Irlo Bronson Memorial Hwy

Lighthouse Key Resort and Spa is a mid-range property with 80 well-maintained (if dated) condo-style suites within four miles of Walt Disney World Resort. Suites have two, three, or four bedrooms, as well as full kitchens, living and dining areas, and covered patios. The hotel has a large heated outdoor pool, as well as a separate lap pool, and whirlpool. The fitness center, small arcade, billiards, and spa ensure that the whole family will keep busy. The hotel doesn’t provide a free breakfast, and there’s no full restaurant on-site, but there is a pub overlooking the pool. With its park shuttle service, variety of amenities, and spacious apartments, the property is good choice for families visiting the area.

Coral Cay Resort
2300 Caravelle Cir

Coral Cay Resort is a mid-range, gated town house community with 155 two-story units, all with hot tubs and screened-in porches. Most of the town houses are well-maintained with fully equipped kitchens, washer/dryers, and three or four bedrooms. Some units have great views of the lake. But furnishings are not new: They include tube-style TVs, and guests have complained about stains on the floors and furniture. The property is right off Highway 192, with Walt Disney World 10 minutes away and SeaWorld/Universal Studios about 20 minutes away. There is an outdoor pool area with a small hot tub and wading pool, and beautiful lake views. The resort has two playgrounds with lots of colorful equipment for children, and a volleyball court. There is no on-site fitness center, but there is a walking path with workout stations.

Red Lion Hotel Orlando - Kissimmee Maingate
7300 W Irlo Bronson Memorial Hwy

The mid-range Maingate Resort And Spa has over 1,000 rooms in an older, motel-style resort. Guests are drawn here for its prime location just down the road from the gates to Disney World and other theme parks (the hotel provides a free shuttle). Rooms are pleasant if generic, but spacious and equipped with coffeemakers and flat-screen TVs. The outdoor space and leisure facilities here are excellent, with vast and well-kept landscaped gardens along with three outdoor pools. One downside is the on-site diner, which is not all that well-received by guests, but there are plenty of dining options nearby -- including two restaurants right across the street.
