Amari Hua Hin
117/74 Takiab Road, Nongkae

The Amari Hua Hin is a stylish, modern hotel with 223 rooms in southern Hua Hin city -- it's quiet, yet near the happening Cicada Weekend Night Market, making it a good weekend getaway from Bangkok. Rooms are spacious and come with iPod docks and DVD players, along with rainfall showers and small balconies. The resort has excellent wellness facilities, with a 125-foot (38-meter) saltwater lap pool, plus a beautiful fitness center, and a spa. There are also a kids' club, excellent meeting facilities, and an array of restaurants and bars, though it does not sit directly on the beach. The hotel does offer a great value compared to some of the surrounding properties, including the Hyatt Regency Hua Hin.

Let's Sea Hua Hin Al Fresco Resort
83/188 Soi Huathanon 23, Khaotakieb - Hua Hin Road

Let's Sea Hua Hin Al Fresco Resort is an upscale property on the beach that's among the popular places to stay in town. All of its 40 individual duplexes front the hotel's gorgeous, lagoon-style pool -- which is almost 400-feet long -- and some units add private rooftop terraces. Expect well-stocked minibars, Bose stereos, and bathrooms with deep soaking tubs, but noise from neighbors has been an issue for some guests. Features include an attractive spa and sleek gym, and a pool bar with extended daily happy hour. There's also a beachfront restaurant, but numerous past guests have said that food is less than spectacular. Children under 12 years old aren't allowed, so families may be better off staying at the Wora Bura Resort & Spa next door.

Anantasila Villa by the Sea, Hua Hin
33/17 Soi Mooban Huadon, Petchkasem Road, Nongkae

Anantasila by the Sea, Hua Hin is an upper-middle-range 84-room resort in southern Hua Hin. The uncluttered stretch of beach and panoramic views of Khao Takiab (Chopsticks Hill) are a plus, and many of the classically styled rooms are villas and apartments, excellent for groups and families -- some rooms have great sea views. It's a 15-minute drive from central Hua Hin, but the resort provides free shuttle service, and has a 25-meter outdoor pool, water sports, a restaurant, and beachfront bar with Gulf of Thailand views. For a more luxurious stay in Hua Hin, travelers may want to consider the Anantara, where rooms are a bit more fresh.

Baan Talay Dao Resort
2/10 Soi Takiab Village, Phetchkasem Riad, Nong-kae

Set directly on the beach in southern Hua Hin, the mid-range Baan Talay Dao Resort has a tucked-away, serene vibe. Rooms range from basic to more splashy villas and multi-bedroom suites, and all are air-conditioned and feature flat-screen TVs. The resort has an infinity pool and restaurant serving Thai and international cuisine. Cicada Market is a 10-minute walk, and the panoramic views from Chopsticks Hill are a 10-minute drive from the hotel, but central Hua Hin and the Hua Hin Night Market are a bit farther. Travelers looking for more luxury should consider the nearby Intercontinental or the trendier Let's Sea Hua Hin Al Fresco, though rates will be higher.

Anantara Hua Hin Resort
43/1, Phet Kasem Road

The 187-room Anantara Resort and Spa Hua Hin is a polished luxury retreat located a short drive from the center of Hua Hin. The resort is hidden away in lush gardens, and features two swimming pools, a spa and fitness center, and an excellent array of restaurants and bars offering everything from fine Italian to authentic Thai cuisines. Elegant rooms feature shiny hardwood floors, contemporary Thai silks and artwork, though some show a bit of wear. The landscaped grounds and peaceful spa are a terrific urban escape, though the beach is not the nicest. Guests may want to consider the Intercontinental Hua Hin Resort, which offers luxury toiletries in guest room bathrooms, though rates will be higher.

Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas Hua Hin
1 Damnernkasem Road

Hua Hin's first hotel and certainly one of its grandest, the Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas Hua Hin is a luxury property with lots of character. Built in 1923 (when the Thailand-Malaysia rail line started and the town became the country's first beach resort), this colonial, sprawling property sits right on the beachfront in the center of town. The 207 rooms and 42 private villas -- the latter complete with plunge pools or hot tubs -- have high ceilings, polished wood floors, period furniture, and modern amenities. The resort also has extensive facilities, including four swimming pools, four restaurants, several elegant bars, a comprehensive spa and fitness center, and even a putting green and tennis courts. The hotel is also very family-friendly, with three children's pools, a large kids' club, and a playground. Located near all of Hua Hin's best restaurants, shops, and other amenities, this is certainly one of the most convenient, historic, and atmospheric resorts in the area.

Rest Detail Hotel Hua Hin
19/119 Huan Hin Soi 19, Tambol Hua Hin, Amphur Hua Hin

The luxury Rest Detail Hotel Hua Hin is a beachfront resort a 10-minute drive from the town center. All 56 rooms and villas have bright, airy decor and views of the sea or garden, and some of the higher-category units have direct pool or beach access, and private pools. Excellent in-room features include iPod docks, DVD players, beach accessories, and coffeemakers. Hotel amenities include a lovely spa, a few meeting spaces, and free Wi-Fi throughout, however, there's no gym on-site. There's a decent selection of restaurants with 24-hour room service, and a varied buffet breakfast is included in rates. Families may prefer the nearby Wora Bura Resort & Spa, which has more services for children.

Baan Manthana Hotel
24/10 Srasong Rd

Baan Manthana Hotel is an older, two-and-a-half pearl hotel located in downtown Hua Hin, just a few steps from the Night Market. The 75 rooms here are pretty basic, spread across three buildings, and furnished with little more than beds, chairs, and old TVs. The large balconies are a plus, as is free Wi-Fi, and the hotel's small pool is fine for cooling off (though it's seen better days). There are tons of restaurants, bars, and shops around, and the beach is just over a 10-minute walk from here, but the hotel has few other features, and doesn't serve any meals. For something in the same price range right on the beach, consider the Imperial Hua Hin Beach Resort, though it's farther from the action in town.

Putahracsa Hua Hin
22/65 Naeb Kaehat Road

The upscale Putahracsa Hua Hin is a beautiful 67-unit boutique hotel spread across two zones, the ocean-facing Oceanside, where villas are located, and the garden-filled Silksand, which houses the rooms. Rooms are situated around the large Silksand pool and feature patios or balconies plus sliding glass doors that let in lots of natural light. Villas are similarly bright and chic but add their own whirlpool hot tubs (and pools in many). The amenities at this property are stellar, and include two restaurants, free breakfast, a bar, a bakery/coffee shop, a fitness center, and an elegant spa. All in all, it's one of the best choices in town for vacationing couples, but there's a lack of child-friendly facilities. Wora Bura Resort & Spa, with a kids' club and daily activities, might be a better option for families.

Cape Nidhra Hotel
97/2 Petchkasem Road

Cape Nidhra is a five-pearl boutique resort on the beach in Hua Hin, right near the city center. All 59 of the gorgeous suites here feature decks with small private plunge pools, though some guests have complained that they don't get enough sunlight and are cold. Fortunately, there's a large saltwater pool for swimming laps that gets a fair bit more light, as well as plenty of other wellness amenities including a spa with steam and sauna, yoga and Thai boxing classes, and a lovely bar -- On the Rocks -- with views of the sea. Room service is available. While Cape Nidhra is a great choice for couples on romantic getaways, families should try the kid-friendly Wora Bura Resort & Spa instead.
