Courtyard by Marriott Waikiki Beach

Small standard rooms and a location 10 minutes from the beach are drawbacks, but the Courtyard offers solid service, a pool, Jacuzzi, spa, and a relaxation room at affordable rates.

Aqua Palms Waikiki

Aqua Palms Waikiki is a two-and-a-half-pearl hotel on Waikiki’s west side, an eight-minute walk from Kahanamoku Beach and close to the Hilton Hawaiian Village. Its 224 are tired and lack full ocean views, but include air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, Sony PlayStations, mini-fridges, and (in some) small balconies. Loungers surround the small pool and the Weber gas grill is a definite plus. Other amenities include a cardio room and a Blu-Ray/DVD/video game library. There’s no on-site restaurant, but guests receive discounts to a few nearby eateries. Aqua Palms’ freebies include beach chairs, towels, and shuttle service to central Waikiki Beach and Ala Moana Center. If you'd prefer direct beach access, it’s worth considering the Park Shore Waikiki instead, where rates are often similar and the overall vibe is more pleasant.

Hyatt Centric Waikiki Beach
349 Seaside Ave

Situated in the heart of Waikiki, a short walk from the beach, Hyatt Centric Waikiki Beach is a modern, upscale property with 230 rooms. All rooms feature contemporary, soothing decor, solid amenities, and great bathrooms with separate showers and tubs. Balconies, though, are not available in any room category. Property highlights include a small pool area that, while pleasant, doesn't have much room for lap swimming, plus a 24-hour fitness center with a few cardio and strength-training machines. The alfresco breakfast buffet is varied and tasty, and light snacks are available in the lobby bar during the afternoon, but the hotel lacks a full restaurant. Travelers shopping around may want to consider the Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort, which is right on the beach and offers a huge array of on-site amenities and dining options.

OHANA Waikiki East Hotel

OHANA Waikiki East Hotel is a two-and-a-half-pearl property that's a 10-minute walk from the beach and surrounded by upscale shopping. The 425 air-conditioned rooms are bright, but dated, with white wicker furniture, small flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and granite-accented bathrooms. OHANA’s pool and hot tub are situated in a tranquil courtyard and surrounded by palm trees and lounge chairs. Other amenities include a tired fitness center and unlimited rides on the Waikiki Trolley Pink Line. The independently-owned restaurants found on-site get mostly positive reviews and include Italian, Japanese, and a steakhouse. Bed-and-breakfast packages are available. Parking is available for a fee, and Wi-Fi is included in the resort fee. For an oceanfront stay with modern rooms and an ocean-view pool, it’s worth checking out the Park Shore Waikiki instead.

Stay Hotel Waikiki
2424 Koa Ave

Stay Hotel Waikiki is a two-and-a-half-pearl hotel fabulously located a two-minute walk from Waikiki Beach. Its 73 air-conditioned rooms are small and basic, and traffic can be disruptively loud (free earplugs are available). Expect queen or two twin beds, flat-screen TVs with hundreds of channels, mini-fridges, and dated bathrooms. A few rooms have balconies too. There’s no restaurant, but the on-site karaoke joint serves up tasty bar food. Other amenities include free laundry facilities, free beach toys and gear, and 24-hour coffee, tea, and filtered water. Limited parking is also available. For a Waikiki stay that's even closer to the beach (with extras like a pool and surf shop), Park Shore Waikiki Hotel might hit the spot.

Waikiki Monarch Hotel

Outside the heart of Waikiki, this dated budget hotel is still close to dining and shopping. It’s about as far from beach as you can get and still be in Waikiki, but still within walking distance (under 20 minutes). Those just looking for a cheap place with a pool, or business travelers who value its proximity to the convention centers, can find a deal here. Others might consider checking the Ohana Waikiki West or the Aqua Waikiki Pearl for more central locations and amenities.

The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Waikiki Beach
383 Kalaimoku Street, Waikiki Beach

The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Waikiki Beach is a luxurious apartment hotel with 552 studios and suites spread across two towers. All of the spacious, inviting units feature apartment-like amenities, including well-equipped kitchens or kitchenettes, living areas with pull-out sofas, plus washing machines and dryers. The property also offers plenty of hotel-like amenities, including multiple restaurants, a gourmet market, a spa for massages and facials, two outdoor infinity pools with views over the city, and a 24-hour fitness center with a yoga studio, not to mention a wide selection of meeting spaces. It's a luxurious property, but rates are high especially considering that it's not on the beach. Travelers shopping around may also want to consider the Moana Surfrider, which has a spot right on the ocean but is busier and a touch less classy.

Waikiki Sand Villa Hotel
2375 Ala Wai Blvd

Waikiki Sand Villa Hotel is a two-and-a-half-pearl property located a seven-minute stroll from Waikiki Beach’s gorgeous oceanfront. It’s 214 air-conditioned rooms are dated, but clean, and come with small flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and high-tech Toto Washlets. Small balconies are standard, but none offer ocean views. The hotel’s outdoor pool is surrounded by lounge chairs and has partially-shaded areas covering the hot tub. Waikiki Sand's restaurant (and bar) get mostly positive reviews. Its breakfast buffet is only so-so, but the restaurant is open late. Hotel amenities include a coin-operated laundry room, a wine bar, Japanese foot spa, fitness center, and a hospitality room. This is one of the best deals in Waikiki, but OHANA Waikiki East by Outrigger has similarly priced rooms with multiple restaurants, a serene pool, and is a  five-minute walk to the beach.

Aqua Pacific Monarch

The Aqua Pacific Monarch is a 34-story, condo-style hotel near the heart of Waikiki. Set on a busy avenue, it's not the best spot for a quiet stay, although the higher floors are insulated from most of the city noise. Rooms have a fairly generic look, with wall-to-wall carpeting, contemporary wood furniture, and tropical prints throughout. Some offer spectacular views of Waikiki from private balconies, and the panoramic vistas from the rooftop pool are even better. The property is two blocks from the beach and close to lots of shopping and dinning. For more stylish accommodations in the same reasonable price range, check next door at the VIVE Hotel Waikiki or at the Shoreline Hotel Waikiki, which also has a rooftop pool.

Grand Waikikian by Hilton Grand Vacations

Housed in a 39-story tower overlooking the beach, the 331-room Grand Waikikian by Hilton Grand Vacations Club is an upscale time-share condo property popular with families and couples. Contemporary, homey suites have one, two, or three bedrooms, plus full kitchens, washer/dryers, balconies, and an array of solid amenities. There isn’t much on-site, but guests have full access to the adjacent Hilton Hawaiian Village resort, which features five pools, 18 restaurants, shops, a spa, a kids’ club, and a gym. The complex is massive, and crowds should be expected everywhere. Travelers seeking something more upscale may prefer the The Royal Hawaiian, a Luxury Collection Resort, Waikiki.
