The Inn at Mavericks
346 Princeton Ave

The Inn at Mavericks is an upscale, intimate little inn with just six rooms. But all six of those rooms offer a patio or balcony with gorgeous views of the tranquil Pillar Point Harbor and Pacific Ocean beyond. The rooms are homey, with seating areas, gas fireplaces, and deep soaking tubs. Binoculars are provided for watching action on the water, and a communal fire pit is popular with guests. Some guests love the fog horn that sounds every few minutes around-the-clock, but others find it annoying, so earplugs are provided. For another four-pearl option in the area, travelers could try Oceano Hotel & Spa Half Moon Bay, which also includes fitness and business centers and a spa (all lacking here).

Oceano Hotel & Spa Half Moon Bay
280 Capistrano Rd, Half Moon Bay Harbor

The upscale Oceano Hotel & Spa Half Moon Bay is a large, resort-style property that encompasses an indoor mall and gated outdoor event space overlooking Pillar Point Harbor. It's a popular event destination, especially during spring and summer, when there can be as many as four weddings booked in a single weekend. Its facilities appeal to business groups, as well, and it's conveniently located for Half Moon Bay tourist attractions. Though some of the decor is dated, the rooms are large, with fireplaces, private balconies, and soaking tubs; villas have full kitchens. Leisure travelers looking to avoid some of the crowds can opt to stay in the separate Oceano Inn villas, but miss out on the regular hotel services.

The Ritz-Carlton, Half Moon Bay
1 Miramontes Point Road

The romantic 261-room Ritz-Carlton Half Moon Bay serves the Ritz-Carlton name well, offering stunning rooms, a large spa, and beautiful bay views -- though the fog sometimes makes it difficult to get a good glimpse. Perched on a cliff overlooking the Pacific, the hotel has excellent outdoor facilities including fire pits facing the ocean and a manicured 18-hole golf course. Rooms are spacious, elegant, yet simple, with beautiful marble bathrooms and quaint shutters covering windows. Fire pit rooms come with -- you guessed it -- cozy outdoor fire pits looking out onto the rocky coast. But the on-site restaurants lack "wow" factor and are expensive, and the indoor pool is lackluster.

Beach House at Half Moon Bay
4100 Cabrillo Hwy N

Located right on the beach, this three-and-a-half pearl boutique hotel draws business travelers during the week and tourists on the weekends, thanks to its well-equipped meeting spaces, proximity to San Francisco, and casual, friendly atmosphere. Stunning Pacific Ocean views are visible from the large outdoor patio, pool, and hot tub, as well as from most of the hotel's 54 junior suites. While there's no on-site restaurant, it's a short drive to Half Moon Bay's Main Street. Travelers seeking more dining options and on-site amenities might want to check out the Oceano Hotel & Spa.

Cypress Inn on Miramar Beach
407 Mirada Rd

The 18-room Cypress Inn on Miramar Beach is a mid-range boutique located in a quiet residential neighborhood next to the Pacific Ocean. The rooms are homey and romantic, and have a coastal California style that matches the setting. Some rooms have balconies offering spectacular ocean views. Fireplaces in all rooms and two-person jetted tubs in some add romantic touches. The free breakfast and evening wine reception with homemade desserts are appreciated perks, as is the resident massage therapist. There is access to a pretty coastal trail right outside the door of the property. Both Wi-Fi and on-site parking are free, but there's little else in the way of facilities.

Comfort Inn Half Moon Bay
2930 Cabrillo Hwy N

Not far from the beach, the Comfort Inn is a 53-room motel on the coast highway. As a budget option, it's the best appointed and most stylish in the pricey Half Moon Bay area. Updated chocolate-and-gold accents and modern dark-wood furnishings raise the clean, efficient rooms here above the competition. The motel even has an exercise room, rare at this price point. Rooms here are more polished but largely comparable to those at the older and dowdier Coastside Inn, so if you have your eye on the bottom line, consider that slightly cheaper option closer to downtown. Due to the Comfort Inn's highway location, rooms at the front can be noisy.
