Catalonia Avinyo

Three-and-a-half-pearl Hotel Catalonia Avinyo's best asset is its location in the heart of Barcelona's Barri Gotic. Shopping, dining and nightlife are just outside, and there are good public transport links to the beach and other attractions. That's not to say the hotel is otherwise lacking at all. In fact, it's a fresh, modern option with surprising features for this part of town. That includes the small rooftop pool and compact fitness room. The 83 rooms are small, with smart urban decor plus free Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, and flat-screen TVs. Top-level Suites are worth the extra buck, with a sharper finish including robes and large rainfall showers, plus secluded terraces. Guests who prefer a more traditional style could look at H10 Montcada Boutique Hotel instead -- though it's not as central.

H10 Raco Del Pi

Located in the heart of the Gothic Quarter, H10 Raco Del Pi is a mid-range boutique hotel with only 37 rooms, all of which have either one double or two single beds. Rooms are pretty and bright, with high ceilings and lovely mosaic bathrooms; some units also have balconies. However, on-site amenities are limited to free Wi-Fi, a business corner, a lobby bar, and a restaurant that only serves breakfast for a fee. Room prices soar in the summer months. Travelers looking for somewhere with more features should consider Hotel Catalonia Portal de l'Angel, which features a full restaurant and a small pool.

Mercer Hotel Barcelona

One of Barcelona's top-rated hotels, the 28-room Mercer Barcelona offers the intimacy of a boutique hotel and the amenities of a larger property. Add in its location -- tucked away on a charming, cobblestone street in the city's Gothic Quarter, and within walking distance to many top attractions -- and the Mercer can be a win-win for travelers. Leisure travelers are the main customers here, but business travelers will likely appreciate its "business corner," with its library and computer, and small private areas for events and meetings. The hotel also offers several cocktail and dining options, including the Le Bouchon tapas bar and Jean Luc Figueras' Mercer Restaurant JLF, a rooftop lounge and small pool, a hanging garden, and some of the most comfortable beds around.

Hotel Continental Barcelona

Hotel Continental Barcelona is an old-school two-pearl property along Barcelona’s hopping Las Ramblas. Its 40 rooms are dated, though they're clean and include flat-screen TVs, microwaves, and sometimes unreliable air-conditioning. The priciest rooms have Juliet balconies overlooking Las Ramblas. A top draw are the hotel’s free breakfasts and free 24-hour snack buffet stocked with options including fresh fruit, pastries, pasta, beer, wine, and soft-serve ice cream. Other hotel amenities include computer workstations, a big outdoor terrace, discounted parking, and free Wi-Fi. This isn't a fancy place, but the central Barcelona location is hard to beat. For a central Barcelona alternative with bigger, more modern rooms -- plus a small gym and rooftop pool -- it’s worth checking into Ilunion Auditori. Rates there can be lower, though it lacks the same freebies.

H10 Montcada Boutique Hotel

The 79-room H10 Montcada is a small upscale boutique located in the Gothic Quarter, across the street from the metro and the Barcelona Cathedral. Rooms are modern, spare, and stylish, with wooden floors, brown leather accents, and great amenities such as free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, Nespresso machines, and tons of toiletries. But most are on the small side, and units on lower floors may experience traffic noise and vibrations from the metro. The restaurant serves a varied breakfast buffet in a homey room (for a fee) and the lobby bar has a speakeasy-meets-travel theme that is charming and elegant. The highlight, however, is the beautiful seasonal rooftop terrace, complete with a whirlpool, padded loungers, a bar, and 360-degree views. For a rooftop pool (not just a whirlpool), travelers could consider the slightly pricier Hotel Barcelona Catedral nearby.

Hesperia Barcelona Barri Gòtic
Carrer Ample, 31 Ciutat Vella

Hesperia Barri Gotic is a mid-range boutique hotel located a short walk from the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona's Old Town. The 71 rooms are bright and sunny, with flat-screen TVs and air-conditioning plus modern bathrooms with large rainfall showers; however, there have been a few complaints of street noise. The hotel doesn't offer much in terms of amenities. There's a continental breakfast buffet served daily (for a fee), a lounge area with a business corner, a fitness center with a few cardio machines and a rack of free weights, and free hotel-wide Wi-Fi. Travelers shopping around for a place to stay in the area may also want to consider the H10 Raco del Pi, which has similar amenities and rates, but prettier rooms.
