Glasgow Guest House
56 Dumbreck Road

The two-pearl Glasgow Guest House offers bed-and-breakfast-style accommodations in a quaintly traditional semi-detached house in the southwest suburbs of Glasgow. Some of the area's prettiest parkland is nearby, and the city center is easily reached by road or rail. Its seven rooms, which include a two-bedroom apartment with a full kitchen, are clean and well-presented, though those facing the busy road can be prone to noise. The free, full Scottish breakfast is a highlight, though it's the energetic and welcoming presence of the owner that really keeps guests returning. For a budget property that's a bit more central, travelers could try the Premier Inn Glasgow City Centre - George Square.

Hilton Glasgow Grosvenor Hotel
1-9 Grosvenor Terrace, Great Western Road

The 97-room Hilton Glasgow Grosvenor Hotel is an upscale property located in Glasgow's West End, a two-minute walk from Glasgow Botanic Gardens and bustling Byres Road. Contemporary rooms are spacious, with elegant furnishings, large windows, and sharp decor, and some rooms have lovely views of the Botanic Gardens. There is a stylish on-site steakhouse, Bo'Vine, that's popular with locals and guests alike, and a chic bar as well. Guests also have free access to the indoor pool and fitness facilities at the hotel's sister property, the Hilton Glasgow Hotel, though it's a 15-minute drive from the hotel. Fees for Wi-Fi and parking are less-than-generous, and comparable rates and features can be found at the Grand Central Hotel in central Glasgow, where Wi-Fi is free.

Number 10 Hotel
10-16 Queens Drive

The 26-room Number 10 Hotel is an upper-middle-range boutique property set in a Victorian building on the south side of Glasgow overlooking Queen's Park. Rooms are homey, but modern, with varying decor and period architectural elements such as fireplaces and stained glass windows. The hotel serves a daily traditional Scottish breakfast (for a fee), and the restaurant serves a lovely afternoon tea set and excellent, locally sourced, up-market pub fare. This is a popular venue for weddings and events, with an outside terrace, gazebo, and private gardens, but guests looking to stay within walking distance of downtown Glasgow's sights and historic attractions may want to look elsewhere. ABode Glasgow has chic, four-pearl rooms in the heart of the city at slightly higher rates.

The Z Hotel Glasgow
36 North Frederick Street

The Z Hotel Glasgow is a mid-range urban hotel in the center of Glasgow. It's right next to George Square and a three-minute walk to Queen Street Station. Housed in a former printing house, interiors have a trendy urban-industrial edge that includes exposed brick walls and repurposed machinery. While the guest rooms are compact, they've been efficiently designed and include basic amenities such as flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, and en-suite bathrooms. It's worth noting that some lack windows. Features are few, but include free Wi-Fi and a wine-and-cheese gatherings in the evening. For similar budget-friendly rates, travelers will need to look farther outside of town. The GoGlasgow Urban Hotel might fit the bill, and includes meeting rooms for business travelers and a proper restaurant.

Park Inn By Radisson Glasgow City Centre
139-141 West George Street

Opened in 2013, this Park Inn outpost -- a mid-range member of the Radisson family -- offers contemporary accommodations in a building from the Victorian era. Although its 91 air-conditioned rooms try hard to be hip, they fall short of the mark decor-wise; the good news is that they’re comfortably equipped with walk-in power showers, flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi. There’s a nice lineup of on-site features, too, including meeting spaces, a fitness room, and an Italian eatery. Plus the location is well positioned in the heart of Glasgow; it provides easy access to the financial district (aka “The Square Kilometre”) as well as to must-see sites and fashionable shopping or dining districts. But chain hotels abound in the area, so you may want to check out the nearby branches of Holiday Inn, Premier Inn, and Jurys Inn before committing.

Holiday Inn Glasgow City Centre Theatreland
161 West Nile Street

The 113-room Holiday Inn Glasgow City Centre Theatreland is an upper-middle-range hotel with rooms that are particularly stylish and chic for the chain. Centrally located in the middle of Glasgow's theater district, this property is within walking distance of Queen Street Station, the Theatre Royal, and The National Piping Centre. Rooms are compact, but modern, with double glazed windows, flat-screen TVs, and air-conditioning. A full Scottish breakfast is available for a fee and there's a popular French bistro on site as well. Wi-Fi is only free for one hour, or for IHG member, and after that there is a pesky fee. For comparable rates guests should consider the Thistle Hotel Glasgow, which has an indoor pool, sauna, and hot tub.

Lorne Hotel
923 Sauchiehall Street

The Lorne Hotel is an upper-middle-range boutique property located in a quiet area near Glasgow's West End, convenient for guests seeing shows at the nearby SSE Hydro. The Indian restaurant earns rave reviews from guests and locals, and there's also a contemporary Scottish cuisine restaurant, a slick lounge, and a relaxed pub inside the hotel. The 81 rooms are on the small side and a bit of a let down compared with the hotel's stylish common spaces. But, rooms are functional enough and have flat-screen TVs, coffee- and tea-making facilities, and mini-fridges (in some). For a boutique-style property closer to the city center, travelers should consider the Holiday Inn Glasgow City Centre Theatreland -- for slightly higher rates.

ibis styles Glasgow Centre George Square
74 Miller Street

This three-pearl ibis styles property is a clean and contemporary choice with inviting interiors and a convenient central location near restaurants and the Gallery of Modern Art. The Argyle Street train station is just a three-minute walk away. The hotel has a pleasant restaurant and bar that serves lunch and dinner, and a continental breakfast is included in all rates. The 101 guest rooms are a bit small, but they're clean and decked out in an urban-inspired contemporary style. They're equipped with flat-screen TVs, electric kettles, and free Wi-Fi, but lack mini-fridges. Guests seeking something with more features might want to check out the Park Inn by Radisson Glasgow City Centre, which has a fitness room, Italian restaurant, bar and billiards room, and meeting space.

CitizenM Glasgow
60 Renfrew Street

Following the signature model of the Dutch chain, this upper-middle-range citizenM hotel is a chic, design-smart, and unerringly cool hotel set in the north side of central Glasgow. The location means easy access on foot to both plentiful transport links and most of the city's attractions. Interiors are inviting and hip, with plenty of space to lounge and soak up the funky surrounds. Rooms, however, approach pod-like in space with beds accessible from only one side -- though amenities are suitably high-tech. If room size isn't an issue, rates are very reasonable, although more space for your dime can be found at the Holiday Inn Glasgow City Centre Theatreland nearby.

Hotel du Vin at One Devonshire Gardens
1 Devonshire Gardens

The Hotel du Vin at One Devonshire Gardens is a 49-room luxury hotel occupying an elegant row of Victorian townhouses in Glasgow's West End neighborhood. While there's not a great deal in the immediate area, car access is particularly easy and the city center is a 15-minute drive away. The property’s period features have been superbly maintained and the chain's focus on food and drink means top-notch dining options. While rooms are full of high-end touches, some are indeed of a refresh and a few can feel gloomy. Overall, it's an excellent example of the du Vin chain and one of the finest hotel's you'll find in the Glasgow area.
