Glasgow Central Apartments
15/3 Oswald Street, (corporate office)

Glasgow Central Apartments is less hotel, more self-service home-away-from-home. This upper-middle-range property has few on-site features other than a small reception area -- there's no restaurant, breakfast buffet, bar, gym, or lobby lounge. But the 27 one- and two-bedroom apartments are contemporary, clean, and spacious with pleasant, if not memorable, decor like wood floors and purple pops of color. Apartments have dining areas, sitting areas with sofa beds, separate bedrooms, and fully equipped kitchens with ovens, fridges, and cookware. The location is convenient -- almost across the street from the main train station, and a quick jaunt into the center of Glasgow. Parking is offered for an extra fee. For a more classic hotel option, the nearby Jurys Inn Glasgow offers amenities like a restaurant, though rooms are smaller.

Sherbrooke Castle Hotel
11 Sherbrooke Avenue, Pollokshields

The Sherbrooke Castle Hotel, is not -- as the name suggests -- a true castle, but it looks an awful lot like one, with a grand red sandstone facade complete with turrets and towers. The upper-middle-range hotel has 18 rooms with varying styles that include quality wooden furniture and spacious well-lit bathrooms. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel, though breakfast is not included. There are multiple function venues throughout, though the hotel is well outside the city's tourist areas, and guests looking to be closer to the action should consider ABode Glasgow, a sharp boutique hotel in the center of town.

GoGlasgow Urban Hotel by Compass Hospitality
517 Paisley Road West

The three-pearl GoGlasgow Urban Hotel features stylish contemporary interiors and attracts mainly guests catching a game at the nearby Ibrox Stadium. Though a bit far from the city center, there's a bus stop right across the street that takes guests there in 15 minutes -- or it's a 12-minute drive. The 117 guest rooms are modern and offer a good value with free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, kettles, and sleek bathrooms. They lack minibars and air-conditioning, however, and might be subject to some bothersome noise. The hotel has an on-site restaurant and bar serving pub-style food, as well as a few meeting rooms. Though it might be a bit pricier, Premier Inn Glasgow Pacific Quay is a good alternative that’s a bit closer to the city center, plus it offers views of River Clyde from patios and some rooms.

Holiday Inn Express Glasgow - City Ctr Theatreland
165 West Nile Street

The 118-room Holiday Inn Express Glasgow City Centre - Theatreland is a contemporary two-and-a-half-pearl chain hotel centrally located on a busy main street in the Glasgow's theater district. Guests are a three-minute walk from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and just a few blocks from the Sauchiehall Street shopping district. Rooms are compact and tidy, with a navy blue and white color scheme as well as flat-screen TVs. There's an on-site meeting room and a bar off the lobby with modern, inviting decor. All bookings include free Wi-Fi, flat-screen satellite TVs, and a hot and cold buffet breakfast served daily. Compared to other hotels in this category across Glasgow, including the Devoncove Hotel, this is a far more updated and cozy budget option.

Crowne Plaza Glasgow
1 Congress Road, Strathclyde

Overlooking the River Clyde, the Crowne Plaza Glasgow is an upscale landmark hotel a few minutes' walk from Glasgow's SSE Hydro arena and the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (SECC). Although the 332 rooms are undergoing renovations, even older ones are decent, with a solid range of amenities including mini-fridges and waffle-comb robes. The health facilities are also impressive and include a heated pool, a sauna, and a steam room. And the restaurant gets good feedback, though can get busy at times. Rates are generally reasonable, especially if you can snag one of the higher-level room with excellent cityscape views. However, extra fees for breakfast and Wi-Fi should be taken into consideration.

Radisson Blu Hotel, Glasgow
301 Argyle Street

This Radisson Blu is a high-end, 250-room hotel occupying an eye-catching building in the center of Glasgow. The location means most of the city is within easy walking distance while also providing easy access by car and train. Rooms have designer interiors and impressive floor-to-ceiling windows, though some beds have been reported as being too hard. Access to the health club with a pool is a big bonus, while restaurant and bars are nicely styled -- albeit rather expensive. It is certainly one of the priciest options in town, but this is luxury 21st-century style.

Hotel Indigo Glasgow
75 Waterloo Street

An upscale, artsy boutique hotel, the Indigo is located within a short walk of Glasgow's buzzing city center. A blend of Victorian architectural details and contemporary furnishings, this property manages to be elegant without being stodgy. Rooms are chic and attractive and come with great amenities, including free minibars. However, traffic noise can be an issue on lower levels and the bathrooms run small. The hotel's restaurant, Marco Pierre White, serves an excellent breakfast and reputedly one of the best steaks in Glasgow. It's open all day and well into the evening. There's also a small but modern gym and free Wi-Fi throughout.

Jurys Inn Glasgow
80 Jamaica Street

The 321-room Jurys Inn Glasgow is a huge, smarter-than-average mid-range chain hotel set in the center of Glasgow overlooking the River Clyde. The pleasant rooms are relatively spacious and some feature impressive views, though can also be noisy. There's little in the way of facilities beyond the restaurant-bar and coffee shop -- though interiors are unexpectedly atmospheric. Meeting spaces attract business travelers. While rates are good for a city center hotel, you get more bang for your buck at the nearby Grand Central Hotel.

Premier Inn Glasgow Pacific Quay (SECC) Hotel
Pacific Quay

The Premier Inn Glasgow Pacific Quay is a sleek and modern budget hotel set on the south bank of the River Clyde, with easy access to local BBC offices, SSE Hydro arena, and the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (SECC). Its 180 rooms are clean and contemporary, with comfortable beds and large flat-screen TVs, though they lack telephones, and the windows don't open. The large restaurant has a decent menu and good bar, and Wi-Fi and parking are both free of charge. All in all, it's an excellent no-frills base for those with business -- or leisure -- in the area, but it's a bit far from the city center. Travelers looking for something closer to town may want to check out the chain's George Square location

Kimpton Blythswood Square Hotel
11 Blythswood Square

The elegant and luxurious Blythswood Square hotel, housed in a grand Georgian building, overlooks its namesake square. While interiors are glitzy and modern, plenty of the building's original character and historical features have been retained. Rooms are sleek and contemporary, and while some are small and dark, all have attractive marble bathrooms and free Wi-Fi. The large spa with an impressive thermal suite and the chic cocktail bar add to the Blythswood's sophisticated ambiance. However, the quality of the breakfast service is reportedly inconsistent, which detracts from this pricey hotel's otherwise luxurious atmosphere.
