Amalia Hotel
10 Leoforos Vassilissis Amalias

Amalia Hotel is a three-and-a-half pearl hotel with a central location in Syntagma Square. The National Gardens and several public transport stops are right outside the hotel, plus there are several other tourist sites, restaurants, bars, and shops within walking distance. The 97 guest rooms are modern with streamlined furnishings, flat-screen TVs, minibars, and free Wi-Fi -- some rooms have balconies. Features are limited to a free American-style buffet breakfast, restaurant, and lobby bar. There are also five meeting rooms available along with a rooftop garden with lovely views overlooking the city. Downsides are that there is no swimming pool, fitness center, or spa facilities. Travelers may also consider Melia Athens with a rooftop restaurant, swimming pool, and whirlpool; though there are additional fees for breakfast and use of in-room Wi-Fi.

Apollo Hotel
10 Achilleos Street, Metaxourghio Square

In an unattractive neighborhood surrounded by old apartment buildings, the Apollo is dated but offers affordable rates for a fairly central location. With a free (but scant) breakfast buffet, a rooftop bar with great views, the National Theater less than a 10-minute walk away, and the Acropolis, Parthenon, and Ancient Agora within a 10-minute metro ride, the hotel finds that most guests are willing to overlook old curtains and the smell of bug spray for the low rates.

President Hotel
43 Kifissias Leoforos

The 22-story President Hotel is considered a skyscraper in Athens. The 516-room, three-pearl property caters mainly to groups of tourists -- the lobby has been compared to Grand Central Station in the mornings. Despite basic, dated rooms and a nondescript location away from tourist attractions, the hotel does have great features including a seasonal and unheated rooftop pool and chic Penthouse 21 Bar and Restaurant with great city views. Rooms on higher floors offer sweeping views of Athens, but there is a pesky fee for Wi-Fi.

Oscar Hotel
25 Filadelfias

The 164-room mid-range Oscar Hotel has a great central location near Omonia Square, but the neighborhood is a bit dicey and the hotel's overall decor looks old. Rooms have '90s green carpeting, no showers (bathtubs only), and guests complain that some rooms smell of smoke and are noisy. All rooms have balconies, some big enough to hold a table and chairs, and some have views of Athens. The rooftop terrace/bar is a highlight here, mainly for its views. Wi-Fi and a buffet breakfast are free, and there's a small, seasonal outdoor pool, with views of Lycabettus Hill and the Acropolis.

Adonis Hotel
Kodrou & Vouls Streets Chrissostomou 3

This modern budget property is located on a quiet street in the historical neighborhood of Plaka, within a five-minute walk of Syntagma Square and a 15-minute walk of the Acropolis. The highlight here is a gorgeous shaded rooftop with views of the Acropolis, where a free continental breakfast is served. Clean rooms have furnished balconies, flat-screen TVs, and a variety of color schemes from brown to pink; just note that bathrooms are small, walls are a bit thin, and some rooms face an interior courtyard. Wi-Fi is free. This is a good value given the terrific location, though it may be worth comparing rates with the nearby Best Western Amazon Hotel.

Hotel Metropolis
46 Mitropoleos Str., Plaka

A good pick for the price, the Hotel Metropolis is a value hotel with 21 modern rooms, including a few with balconies and Acropolis views. It’s a block away from a popular pedestrian street in central Athens with restaurants and shops and within walking distance to Acropolis and the Parthenon. The hotel has a breakfast terrace with amazing views of the Acropolis, but breakfast isn’t included in the room price. Potential guests may want to compare rates at the Athens Center Square, a trendy mid-range hotel with a rooftop bar and modern rooms.

The Cloister at Sea Island
100 Cloister Dr

The Cloister at Sea Island is a historic, five-star luxury resort built to evoke a cross between a Mediterranean estate and an English manor. It’s part of a large, grandiose property directly on the water’s edge consisting of three parts: a hotel centered around a network of golf courses, a central complex that houses a spa and gym, and a cluster of semi-private units that can take on various configurations. Frequented by politicians and celebrities, the hotel offers an all-encompassing experience in the Golden Isles, and it’s possible to not need to leave the complex during one’s stay.

The Sea Gate Inn
1015 Beachview Dr

Sea Gate Inn is an upscale, modern condo-style property across the street from a public beach. The quiet and convenient location is a 10-minute drive from Redfern Village with shops and restaurants. Best for families and couples on vacation, or long-stay travelers, the property offers 24  units and most have kitchenettes, living and dining areas, laundry facilities, and jetted tubs. Daily housekeeping and Wi-Fi are included. There are no dining options on-site and few features other than an outdoor pool and parking garage. But guests also have access to two fitness centers, a larger pool, and a restaurant at the Sea Palms Resort about 15 minutes' drive away.  Couples might prefer the Ocean Lodge for suites with kitchens, as well as free breakfast and a rooftop restaurant -- but no children under 14 are allowed and rates are significantly higher.

The Inn at Sea Island
100 Salt Marsh Dr

The beachy and modern, 85-room Inn at Sea Island hotel is the latest addition to Saint Simon's The Cloister and The Lodge at Sea Island family. Even though the hotel is not located on the beach, as many other hotels in the area are, guests here may get access to the Sea Island Beach club for a fee, as well as the Sea Island golf courses and myriad other amenities for free. While not as luxurious as its famously upscale sister properties, the Inn at Sea Island is still charming and pleasant, and its bright, airy aesthetic makes it feel like a beach house despite its woodland location. A sun-soaked pool is set in an interior courtyard, surrounded by sun loungers, and the lobby bar is open and inviting; both are popular hangouts for guests. Rooms are spacious, bright, and modern, if a bit standard in layout and amenities, and there's an extensive free breakfast buffet daily. There is also a fitness center, business center, and free laundry, all making this hotel popular with both business travelers and vacationers.
