Fort Lauderdale Grand Hotel
4900 Powerline Rd, I-95 to exit 32 Powerline Road

The Fort Lauderdale Grand Hotel is a large, contemporary mid-range hotel located in a residential area of North Fort Lauderdale, a short drive to popular beaches such as Deerfield and Pompano Beach. The 195 guest rooms are spacious, and some have separate living areas and kitchenettes. There are also an outdoor heated pool, a fitness room, and various meeting rooms. Lunch and dinner are served at the on-site Aviatic Bar and Grill, and while breakfast is available at the hotel's Venetian Restaurant, it costs extra.

Premiere Hotel
625 N Fort Lauderdale Beach Blvd, Fort Lauderdale

The family-run, 20-room Premiere Hotel is a value property that offers retro charm and beach access one block away. There’s on-site parking, a heated outdoor pool, barbecue cookouts on a patio, and personalized concierge service. Contemporary rooms include flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and microwaves. Efficiency Rooms and Suites offer full kitchens and partial sea views. However, a high-rise will be constructed in 2015, slightly obstructing ocean views. But, considering the price and beachside location, this property is one of the best budget options in Fort Lauderdale.

Pier Sixty-Six Hotel & Marina
2301 SE 17th Street

The Hyatt Regency Pier 66 is a an upscale, 384-room resort on 22 landscaped acres along the Intracoastal Waterway. The beach is within a five-minute drive, and the hotel has a free beach shuttle. There’s plenty to do here, aside from the beach, with indoor and outdoor play areas, including a life-size outdoor chess set and organized family activities, with multiple pools, restaurants, bars, and a large spa and gym. Rooms are done in soothing beach tones, and all have balconies or terraces, some with excellent water views. For something that's right on Fort Lauderdale's famous beach, The Pelican Grand Beach Resort has charming, boutique-style rooms at cheaper rates right on the ocean.

Hyatt Place Ft. Lauderdale 17th Street Convention Center
1851 SE 10th Ave

As at other Hyatt Places, the Hyatt Place Fort Lauderdale's lobby is best described as "Starbucks chic," with warm colors and a prominent 24-hour cafe. Rooms are large and contemporary (if not quite stylish) and all have separate living areas and flat-screen TVs. The location is convenient for business travelers making a quick trip and people going on cruises leaving from Fort Everglades, and freebies (breakfast, Wi-Fi, self-parking) add value -- but it's not on the beach, unlike most Fort Lauderdale hotels.

The Pillars Hotel Fort Lauderdale
111 N Birch Rd

The quiet, romantic 18-room Pillars Hotel feels like it could be someone's waterfront home, with its well-kept grounds, casual, beach-y decor, lovely terraces, and bright but small rooms and bathrooms. The hotel's highlight is its courtyard pool, which features a beautiful view of the Intracoastal Waterway, but those wanting to stay directly on the beach may consider the Pelican Grand Beach Resort, which is larger but has a similar beach-cottage feel in the rooms and restaurants.

The Worthington Guest House
543 N Birch Rd

Worthington Guest House is an all-male, gay-owned hotel with 63 rooms located across three fenced-in connected properties, designed to provide privacy at the three clothing-optional 24-hour pools, two hot tubs, and courtyards. A cafe serves lunch, free continental breakfast is provided poolside, and guests have access to a small gym. Spacious, clean rooms feature simple -- and sometimes worn -- furnishings and suites have kitchenettes with large refrigerators. Despite being removed from Wilton Manors, this mid-range hotel is in walking distance to the beach and has a friendly atmosphere that makes it more popular than the Cheston House Gay Resort.

Manhattan Tower Apartment Hotel
701 Bayshore Dr

The mid-range Fort Lauderdale Manhattan Tower is a midcentury modern property with 13 apartments and studios situated on the Intracoastal Waterway, a few blocks from the beach. All units are individually decorated with a quirky mix of vintage and newer pieces, and all have full kitchens. Some provide outstanding views of the waterway and the many boats passing by. The waterfront terrace is a relaxing place to hang out, and the outdoor pool is also a plus. There's nowhere quite like the Manhattan Tower in Fort Lauderdale, but Snooze also has vintage-modern charm and kitchenettes, though it's on busy A1A and lacks a pool.

Embassy Suites by Hilton Fort Lauderdale 17th Street
1100 SE 17th Street

Embassy Suites Fort Lauderdale is a mid-range hotel that sits on the 17th Street Causeway, a popular area for business travelers and short-term guests. It's a short drive away from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and walking distance from the Broward County Convention Center and Port Everglades, where many cruise ships are docked and loaded. The hotel houses only two-room suites, each with one bedroom, one living room with sofa bed, a kitchenette, and a balcony. The hotel offers a top-floor fitness center with city views and a large outdoor pool with a waterfall and an accompanying hot tub. Rooms are spacious, clean, and bright and appropriate for a mid-range hotel. The atrium has ceilings that scale the entire hotel, and tropical decor that gives off a strong Vegas vibe.

Pelican Grand Beach Resort, A Noble House Resort
2000 North Ocean Boulevard

The four-pearl Pelican Grand Beach Resort is a 159-room hotel that's slightly boho and a bit Southern belle, with a prime beachfront location. Rooms are charming, with cottage and shabby-chic details plus balconies and vintage bathrooms -- some have ocean views. Direct beach access helps sweeten the deal even further, as does the large pool with lazy river. The hotel also has a spa, fitness room, a restaurant, and even an ice cream shop to really capture that beachy vibe. While there's plenty of seclusion and privacy, there's nothing within an easy walk, and it's a five- to 15-minute drive to the main areas of restaurants, shopping, and nightlife. Travelers may also want to consider the Atlantic Resort and Spa, which is closer to downtown Fort Lauderdale and has lower rates.

The Atlantic Hotel & Spa
601 N Fort Lauderdale Beach Boulevard

Although there's a pool deck overlooking the ocean, a lovely spa, and a cutting-edge gym, the real standouts in this upscale hotel are the large studios and suites, each equipped with a full kitchenette/kitchen, living area or separate living room, and spacious marble bathroom. All 124 units also have private furnished balconies overlooking the ocean. The stylish ground floor restaurant and lounge includes a wrap-around porch for eating alfresco, and more casual dining can be had up on the pool deck. There are several similar properties in the surrounding area, so travelers might want to shop around. For example, the nearby W Fort Lauderdale is a stylish choice with two pools, a Bliss spa, a steakhouse, and popular bars and lounges, but it's more expensive.
