Portrait Firenze
Lungarno Acciaiuoli 4

A glam mid-century take on Florentine luxury, the Portrait Firenze is a boutique property overlooking the Arno River. The location is excellent, with several bars and restaurants nearby, and almost all the city's major sights are within walking distance. Its 37 rooms, some of which have river views and balconies, are well-designed -- a mix of luxe and sophistication -- with microwaves, minibars, Nespresso machines, iPads, and Bluetooth sound systems. Hotel features include an Italian bistro-style restaurant, a breakfast buffet (not included in rates), and free WI-Fi. For a similarly intimate vibe, travelers could consider J.K. Place Firenze as an alternative -- it has a rooftop terrace, a spa, gym, and breakfast is included in the rates.

Hotel Atlantic Palace
Via Nazionale 12

In a convenient location near Santa Maria Novella Station, the mid-range Hotel Atlantic Palace is a popular choice with couples. It's within walking distance to both San Lorenzo Market and the Duomo. The 68 guest rooms are smallish and tidy with terra-cotta floors, mini-fridges, and a mix of contemporary and baroque furniture. Some have furnished balconies. The free breakfast buffet includes cheese, cold cuts, and a D.I.Y. pancake station that guests appreciate. There aren’t many extra features, but there is a small three-seat bar on-site. Guests may want to compare rates with the four-pearl Hotel Cellai, which also has a  a charming rooftop garden.

AC Hotel Firenze
Via Luciano Bausi, 5

Located in the quiet residential neighborhood of Porta al Prato outside Florence's city center, AC Hotel Firenze by Marriott is an upscale design-conscious modern hotel. With 3,025 square feet of event space and office and translation services available, it caters to business travelers. The 118 rooms, spread over five floors, are decorated in a chic, modern style, but they're on the small side. There's an on-site restaurant and bar but no pool or spa. While free Wi-Fi is available in the lobby, only Marriott Rewards members and guests in higher-category rooms get free in-room Wi-Fi. Travelers looking for a hotel with more historic character at a similar price might want to consider the Grand Hotel Cavour, which is within easy walking distance of the Duomo and has free Wi-Fi throughout, a spa, and Turkish bath, or the centrally located Hotel Pierre Florence, housed in a 13th-century building, with period architectural details.

Hotel Berchielli
Lungarno Acciaiuoli 14

The historic Hotel Berchielli, where Pablo Picasso stayed for an extended period in late 1949, is literally steps from the Ponte Vecchio and in the heart of Florence's best concentration of museums, shopping, and restaurants. The 76 classically decorated rooms and suites -- some with incredible views of the Arno, the iconic medieval bridge, and the Oltrarno neighborhood -- are spacious by Florence standards, and come with flat-screen TVs, minibars, and free Wi-Fi. Bathrooms are stocked with boutique Etro toiletries, but note that the shower/tub combos in some bathrooms have handheld showerheads. Modernists may prefer the nearby and stylish Continentale Firenze, whose rooftop bar practically hovers above the Ponte Vecchio, but its rates can cost many times those of Hotel Berchielli.

Grand Hotel Adriatico
Via Maso Finiguerra 9, Alerghiera Adriatica Ala

The Grand Hotel Adriatico is a value hotel, and feels like one. Standard rooms are small and, well, pink (pink walls, pink printed comforters), while the spacious suites are a nausea-inducing explosion of horribly busy and mismatched prints (they must be seen to be believed). The common areas such as the lobby and bar fare much better with generic, understated decor. There is a tiny, slightly outdated fitness center (any fitness center is a rarity in Florence) and a small courtyard garden, but the hotel's biggest attribute is its location.

Italiana Hotels Florence
Viale Europa 205

Located near the highway connecting Florence to Milan, the Italiana Hotels Florence is a modern property geared toward tour groups and business travelers. This 104-room, mid-range hotel has four bright meeting rooms, a seasonal outdoor pool, and a Tuscan restaurant. Rooms range from simple to contemporary and sleek, and some have mod circular beds. The location -- a 25-minute bus ride to central Florence -- isn’t ideal for tourists, but rates can be significantly lower than many hotels in the center of town. For a similarly priced property with more character, though, guests could try the Hotel Palazzo Dal Borgo Aprile, a 10-minute walk from the Duomo.

Hotel Orto De Medici
Via San Gallo, 30

The boutique, mid-range Hotel Orto De Medici is located in central Florence, within walking distance of shops, restaurants, public transportation, and popular attractions. All rooms have air-conditioning and some have balconies, and while some look modern and fresh, others appear dated, with pink walls and tiny bathrooms. There's also a beautiful garden with a large fountain, an outdoor terrace with seating, and several common areas. Infusion Bar provides beverages and there's a seasonal garden bar as well. Wi-Fi and breakfast are free but parking costs extra.

NH Collection Firenze Porta Rossa
Via Porta Rossa 19 Rosso, Porta Rossa, City Centre

This historic hotel in the center of Florence offers the best of both worlds: modern decor and comfort in a 12th-century building with beautiful details, such as frescoed ceilings and and stained glass. Most guests consider it a good value for a four-pearl property in a central location near most of the sights, though there aren’t a ton of features; the nearby Grand Hotel Minerva has comparable rates, a rooftop pool, and a restaurant. Fun fact: Some scenes of “Amici miei,” a cult Italian movie from the 1970s, were filmed in one of the NH Porta Rossa’s rooms.

Hotel de La Ville
Piazza Antinori 1 (Via Tornabuoni)

Classic style and a refined atmosphere define the Hotel de la Ville -- a traditionally styled three-and-a-half-pearl hotel on prestigious Via de’ Tornabuoni. While it may seem like the type of place with a stiff upper lip, things here are actually quite approachable. Rooms echo public spaces, with traditional Florentine style, and feature well-stocked minibars, smart TVs, and free Wi-Fi. The cozy hotel bar serves light bites, and holds a daily happy hour with discounted drinks and free canapes. A decent breakfast buffet is free with most bookings, and includes hot options. The location is prime for travelers looking to shop, and the Duomo is only a five-minute walk away. For a more modern option in the same area, try Hotel Cerretani Firenze, though it tends to be pricier.

Hotel Albani Firenze
Via Fiume 12

Hotel Albani Firenze is a particularly elegant palazzo property with lavish period touches, located a short stroll from Florence's main station. While its street isn't particularly interesting, most of the city's tourist attractions are within walking distance. Rooms tend to feel a little on the dated side though some feature glimpses of the famous Duomo cathedral. The restaurant provides fine wines and alfresco dining, while a small gym and sauna are handy additions for some. For a real slice of classical Florence, this makes an excellent pick, though it can also feel a little old fashioned and rates are relatively high.
