Best Western Elyon Colombo
102A, Kirulapone Avenue, Baseline Road

The 59-room Best Western Elyon Colombo is a run-of-the-mill mid-range property that caters to medical-minded travelers with its location near multiple hospitals. This isn't the most central location for tourists -- it's about a 10-minute drive to anywhere of note -- though the affordable rates and rooftop bar with scenic views are certainly pros. Generic, though well-appointed, rooms have tea- and coffee-making facilities, minibars, flat-screen TVs, and safes, but some rooms experience noise from the bar. An all-day restaurant serves quality fare that includes Sri Lankan specialties, plus there are a small gym, meeting space, and free Wi-Fi. For those not visiting surrounding hospitals, it's well worth considering the similarly priced and oceanfront OZO Colombo, which has upscale rooms and an infinity pool.

The Kingsbury Hotel
48 Janadhipathi Mawatha, Colombo 1

This swanky and yet competitively priced option in Colombo's commercial district draws business types and families with good taste. Features include an attractive infinity pool for catching rays (though sun loungers may be hard to snag!), spa, fitness center, and small man-made beach area, but a major port project across the street is a bit of an eyesore. Rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows (views vary), luxurious bedding, and beautiful marble bathrooms with designer toiletries. There are three restaurants, one a romantic seafood option with an expansive wine list. Younger guests often enjoy the rooftop Sky Lounge for sunsets and music that thumps well past midnight. For a more intimate luxury property, consider Casa Colombo, but lose the Fort location and water views.

Ramada by Wyndham Colombo
30 Sir Mohamed Macan Markar Mawatha

The three-and-a-half-pearl Ramada Colombo offers quality accommodation in downtown Colombo, near Galle Face Green and Fort Railway Station. Well-placed near shorefront promenades, attractions, and business districts, it draws a mix of leisure and corporate travelers, and solid work amenities in the 94 rooms cater to the latter. The property isn't huge, but features are good, and they include an outdoor pool amid greenery, a popular Indian restaurant, lounge, coffee shop, sauna, and meeting facilities. Decor is mostly swish in the 2015-renovated common areas, but rooms are on the bland side. Rooms do, however, come with sleek bathrooms, desks, flat-screen TVs, minibars, and tea- and coffee-making facilities. Couples may prefer the more romantic beachfront setting at Mount Lavinia Hotel.

Ceylon City Hotel, Colombo
No. 11 Upatissa Road

The 37-room, mid-range Ceylon City Hotel is located about a 15-minute drive south of famous Galle Face Beach. Many local restaurants and shops are within walking distance, as well as a large shopping mall. The hotel's design is largely utilitarian and unmemorable, but rates are affordable and include free Wi-Fi and parking. Contemporary rooms have large flat-screen TVs, minibars, and air-conditioning, but they can be small and let in noise. There is a restaurant on the fourth floor offering a variety of cuisines and 24-hour room service. The similarly priced Drift BnB has comparable in-room amenities and receives more consistently positive reviews, though it lacks an all-day restaurant.

Cinnamon Red Colombo
59 Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha

The towering 243-room Cinnamon Red Colombo is a sleek upper-middle-range property with gorgeous views of the city and ocean in the distance. The red-and-white-themed Standard Rooms are modern and fresh, with flat-screen TVs and coffee- and tea-making facilities -- plus many have scenic vistas. The hotel’s crowning feature is its infinity pool, with loungers overlooking the water. There's also an adjacent gym. Well-reviewed dining outlets include an all-day restaurant, lobby bar, and rooftop bar. On the downside, the hotel lacks a spa and there are occasional long wait times for elevators. Still, free Wi-Fi and a central location make it an excellent pick for business or leisure travelers. For an alternative, the OZO Colombo is an uber-hip property with similar amenities that's closer to the sea.

Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo
115 Sir Chittampalam A Gardiner Mawatha

This 340-room, mid-range hotel is sometimes overshadowed by its sister property, Cinnamon Grand, but is a major Colombo player in its own right. Lakeside Colombo sits on seven pretty acres overlooking Beira Lake and contemporary rooms have flat-screen TVs, free bottled water, coffee/tea, and spacious bathrooms with tub/shower combos. Common for all Cinnamon properties, food and drink options are a standout, starting with the breakfast buffet and ending with late-night dancing at the classy library-turned-nightclub. The Executive Floor lounge is stocked with gourmet snacks and cocktail-makings, and has a balcony for impressing clients. Paying for breakfast and a crowded fitness center are downsides.

Colombo Court Hotel & Spa
32 Alfred House Ave

Not to be confused with Courtyard by Marriott, the 32-room upscale Colombo Courtyard is a stylish, carbon-neutral boutique hotel on a bustling street in Sri Lanka’s capita with an attractive outdoor pool and on-site spa. Urban-chic guest rooms have attractive hardwood furniture, bold colors, and cool industrial-style bathrooms. There are exciting eco-friendly accents throughout, like the sculpture made from 500 recycled bicycles that winds from the lobby to the fourth floor. The hotel has a buzzing dining and bar scene including international fare at The Scarlet Room and great city views and regular live jazz at the rooftop Cloud Cafe. The area can be noisy, though, and guests looking for Indian Ocean views should try the Galle Face Hotel, which has a rooftop pool, though rates will be higher.

Cinnamon Grand Colombo
77 Galle Road

The 501-room, upscale Cinnamon Grand is a Colombo institution; it is a popular place for weddings and conferences, and has an air of importance and activity. All room types have quality amenities such as free coffee and turndown service, but some carpeting and bedding could use a style upgrade. There are two outdoor pools, a whopping 14 dining options, a large fitness center, and an adjacent Thai-based spa from Angsana (in other words, this is a big property and guests should expect to walk often). Late check-out requests are rarely granted, and beware that taxis through the hotel have higher fares than those on the street. Guest parking and Wi-Fi are free.

Galle Face Hotel Colombo
No. 2, Galle Road

This four-and-a-half-pearl,158-room historic property is located on the waterfront in Colombo, next to popular Galle Face urban park and within easy driving distance of area attractions. It was built in 1864 and its colonial history is apparent throughout, thanks to Oriental rugs, hand-carved wooden accents, and even a small museum. Rooms are well-appointed, if a bit underwhelming, and outfitted with minibars, small flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi, though some guests complain they're small. Extensive facilities include a saltwater pool with ocean views, spa, and 24-hour gym, as well as three restaurants, three bars, and a pub. It's worth comparing rates with the nearby Cinnamon Grand Colombo, which has more striking rooms and a happening scene.

The Ocean Colombo
No 40 Melbourne Avenue on Marine Drive
