Creekside Lands Inn
2545 Savannah Hwy

Creekside Lands Inn is a budget hotel located by Long Branch Creek and within a 30-minute drive of historic downtown Charleston. The hotel has an outdoor pool, barbecue grills, and a long dock over the creek with a pretty gazebo where guests can fish, crab, or just take in the view. The 55 rooms are small and simply furnished, though tired, worn, and in need of an update. A continental breakfast is included in the room rate and parking and Wi-Fi are also free. Travelers seeking a budget option closer to town may want to consider Charleston's NotSo Hostel, a homey hostel in Charleston's historic downtown.

Francis Marion Hotel

Dating back to 1924 and considered one of Charleston's grand dames, the 235-room Francis Marion Hotel is an upscale property with an excellent location on Kings Street in historic downtown Charleston. The handsome rooms have classic Charleston style and modern amenities like large flat-screen TVs, but bathrooms are small. The well-liked restaurant serves seasonal Southern cuisine for all meals, and the bar is a lively spot for drinks. A small spa offers a variety of treatments, and the modern fitness center is open 24/7. With two grand ballrooms and several smaller spaces, the hotel is popular for weddings, meetings, and other events. A nearby alternative is the Embassy Suites Charleston, which offers all suites, a pool, and free breakfast, but it is not as classic and elegant.

The Meeting Street Inn
173 Meeting St

The Meeting Street Inn is a mid-range, bed-and-breakfast-style hotel situated in the heart of historic Charleston right across from the popular City Market. Its 56 guest rooms are individually decorated with 19th-century decor that includes canopied four-poster beds and antique furniture, though some areas are in need of TLC, and lack of overhead lighting can make rooms feel dark. Modern amenities include mini-fridges, flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi, and some rooms have private furnished balconies. The hotel offers a free hot breakfast daily and a free afternoon manager's reception with wine and cheese. There's also a lovely courtyard with a spacious whirlpool, but there's no full-service restaurant or bar, and few other extra features. For a more intimate property with fresher, traditional decor, consider the Elliott House Inn.

Ansonborough Inn
21 Hasell St

Situated on the outskirts of Charleston's historic district, Ansonborough Inn is an upper-middle-range boutique hotel with charming interiors that hark back to its industrial past. This former stationer's warehouse blends rustic details, like exposed brick walls and wooden ceiling beams, with elegant antique pieces. Its 45 rooms are spacious and homey, and some even have fireplaces and soaring 16-foot ceilings, though travelers should note that street-side rooms might pose noise issues. The hotel offers a free breakfast with freshly baked breads and various hot items, as well as a free afternoon cheese and wine reception and cookies throughout the day. There’s also an atmospheric nautical-themed pub on-site, as well as a rooftop terrace and tiny fitness center. Guests who don't mind staying outside of the downtown area should also consider the Inn at Middleton Place, a mid-range hotel on a beautiful former plantation that has an outdoor pool.

Town & Country Inn and Suites
2008 Savannah Highway

The 105-room Town & Country Inn and Suites is a mid-range property located on a highway about halfway between the airport and downtown Charleston. A casual place, the property fits the bill for families and couples looking for a relatively convenient location outside of the city. Rooms are spacious and comfortable, with flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and excellent bathrooms that have separate tubs and showers. Features include an outdoor pool, a small gym, and a restaurant serving traditional Southern fare. Guests that want a few more features and to be downtown might prefer the Elliott House Inn, which has loaner bikes, free breakfast, and wine and cheese receptions for moderately higher rates.

King Charles Inn

This 91-room Best Western property, located on busy Meeting Street, delivers more amenities than the average downtown Charleston inn, including a pool, a lounge, and free parking. The decor in the common spaces isn't as charming as at some competing properties, such as the Elliott House Inn, but rooms have sleek (if generic) southern style -- poster beds, quilts, and dark wood furniture. The location is steps from the Historic District's best shops, restaurants, and attractions.

French Quarter Inn

This stately historic boutique is one of Charleston's best-known hotels, and has plenty of charming southern details (such as a grand wrought-iron staircase) and a location near Historic Downtown's popular tourist sights. Rooms are spacious and have French-inspired decor, and free extras such as breakfast, daily wine and cheese receptions, and freshly baked cookies add value. But there is no pool or fitness center, unlike at the Market Pavilion Hotel.

The Governor's House Inn
117 Broad St

A landmark bed-and-breakfast with a rich atmosphere, The Governor’s House Inn is located in Charleston's historic district. The four-pearl property offers charming, romantic stays in 11 traditional rooms, which emphasize antique Southern ambience; some rooms have balconies. There are no in-room TVs, but some rooms have mini-fridges and coffeemakers. While there's no on-site restaurant or bar, The Governor's House does serve afternoon tea and wine and a scrumptious breakfast, plus there's plenty of cozy spaces giving ample opportunity to mingle. The nearby Ansonborough Inn, with an on-site pub and rooftop terrace, is a good alternative, though it's not as intimate.

Hyatt Place Charleston/Historic District
560 King St

The upper-middle-range Hyatt Place Charleston/Historic District is located in the trendy Upper King Historic District of Charleston. There are several dining and shopping facilities nearby, along with the The Charleston Museum. The city's free shuttle bus stops right outside the hotel. The 191 rooms are modern and spacious. They come with flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and free Wi-Fi. All rates include a free and extensive hot buffet breakfast, and there is also a 24-hour market for other meals, snacks, and beverages. Wellness facilities include an indoor heated swimming pool, fitness center, and blow dry bar for hair services. For business travelers, there are meeting and event facilities along with a 24-hour business center. Travelers can also consider neighbor hotel Hyatt House Charleston - Historic District with a similar list of features; plus suites with fully-equipped kitchenettes.

Andrew Pinckney Inn

This 41-room boutique hotel, located within walking distance of Historic District attractions, is housed within two historic buildings dating to the 1860s. Its decor incorporates both traditional Charleston details (such as original brick walls) and West Indies style. The charming rooms, renovated in 2010 and 2011, all have individual decor; some have historic details such as original wood floors. But a few units are very small and lack impressive views. The hotel has few on-site features, but the attractive rooms, convenient location, and multiple freebies make it a good value.
