Hampton by Hilton Cartagena
Av. San Martin #8-13

For a mid-range hotel, it doesn’t get much better than the Hampton by Hilton Cartagena. The property is within walking distance of all that Bocagrande has to offer, and features fun, modern decor throughout. Amenities include a rooftop pool, a small fitness center, and communal computers in the lobby. Plus free breakfast and Wi-Fi are definite perks. The only pitfall is that rooms are small, and can feel tight on space. The Holiday Inn Express Cartagena Bocagrande down the street has larger rooms with nicer bathrooms, but tends to be a bit pricier.

Hotel Las Americas Torre del Mar
Anillo Vial, Sector Cielo Mar

The four-pearl Hotel Las Americas Torre del Mar is a family-friendly property with a location right on the beach. It’s just a seven-minute drive from the airport but about 17 minutes by car to most area attractions. The property offers six swimming pools, including an adult-only rooftop pool. A spa, gym, kids’ club, two restaurants, and outdoor activities are wonderful additional perks. The 279 rooms have flat-screen TVs, minibars, and balconies, though there have been complaints about cleanliness and maintenance issues. For a hotel that’s a bit less crowded and loud, travelers may want to consider Sonesta Hotel Cartagena which caters to couples, has a relaxed beach location, and offers free breakfast.

Bastion Luxury Hotel
Calle del Sargento Mayor # 6 - 87 Historic Center

The four-pearl Bastion Luxury Hotel is an excellent option for travelers seeking Old World charm and modern comforts. With 51 rooms, Bastion is one of the larger upscale hotels in the walled city, and has top-notch features such as a rooftop pool, an acclaimed on-site restaurant, a small spa, and a fitness center. Rooms feature gorgeous colonial-inspired decor with luxe amenities like Smart TVs, iPod docks, and Nespresso machines — but all rooms overlook the hotel’s interior courtyard, which might be disappointing for those who enjoy watching Cartagena’s vibrant street life. Travelers looking for an equally upscale hotel that’s a bit more intimate might prefer Hotel Quadrifolio, which has eight rooms and two pools, but doesn’t have a spa or fitness center and tends to be pricier.

Hotel Casa San Agustin

In a town with boutique hotels around every corner, the four-pearl Hotel Casa San Agustin outshines most of its competitors. The hotel’s 30 rooms and richly decorated communal spaces evoke the building’s 17th-century grandeur, and there is locally made artisanal furniture and custom artwork throughout. A stunning interior courtyard with a mosaic tile pool and a gorgeous rooftop with city views are real highlights, but the property’s best amenity is its acclaimed on-site restaurant, Alma. The fine-dining restaurant and its upscale bar are widely considered some of Cartagena’s best, and reservations are nearly impossible to come by — which is perhaps why its so-so breakfast buffet is a real letdown, even though it’s free. It’s worth comparing rates at the nearby Hotel Quadrifolio, a similar property with eight rooms and a more intimate atmosphere, which may appeal to some travelers.

Alfiz Hotel

Alfiz hotel is a distinctive three-pearl hotel in a 17th-century Spanish colonial house with superbly detailed interiors. The hotel's location in the city's historic walled center is great: the cathedral, Gold Museum, Public Clock Tower, and Palace of the Inquisition are all within a three-minute walk. A nice free breakfast includes local options, and the hotel also features a small plunge pool, rooftop hot tub, interior courtyard garden, and library. The eight rooms and suites are themed and individually decorated, and feature period furnishings and antiques. All come with minibars, free Wi-Fi, and flat-screen TVs. Some are split-level rooms with mezzanines. Travelers looking for bigger pool and location closer to the convention center might consider the Allure Chocolat Hotel by Karisma Hotels & Resorts instead.

Hilton Cartagena
Avenida Almirante Brion El Laguito

A short drive from the center of Cartagena, the upscale Hilton Cartagena is pricier than most of its competition, but has the benefits of a quieter location and direct access to the beach without being too removed from tourist attractions. Guests can enjoy full or partial views of the Caribbean Sea from most of the 341 rooms, which also come with minibars and Cuisinart coffeemakers. With a pool and waterslide, five dining options, 24-hour fitness center, and kid-friendly game room, the hotel has many resort-like amenities, but dated interiors leave something to be desired, breakfast isn’t always included with room rates, and the beach isn’t the cleanest or quietest. The more modern Hotel Dann Cartagena offers fresher rooms and similar features for lower prices.

Hotel San Martin

Travelers looking for a low-key, budget hotel in Bocagrande needn’t look further than Hotel San Martin Cartagena. The 40-room property is situated in the middle of Bocagrande, within walking distance of shops, restaurants, bars, and the beach, and is a 10-minute cab ride from Cartagena’s historic walled city. Rooms are sparse and bathrooms are small, but all the necessities — TV, AC, and free Wi-Fi — are present. Plus, the hotel serves free daily breakfast on its charming front patio. Those who would prefer to stay within the walled city should check rates at Centro Hotel, a similar, though more historic property.
