Agape Apartments
Akacfa utca 12 - 14, 1st Floor 111

The budget Agape Aparthotel is in a convenient, if somewhat noisy, location on the Pest side of Budapest, near shopping, nightlife, and public transportation. Its 35 large, apartment-style rooms have well-equipped modern kitchens, which are ideal for groups or those looking for longer stays at budget rates. Apart from the 24-hour reception, though, the Aparthotel lacks all regular hotel services and facilities, so food, drink, and entertainment must be sought elsewhere. Housekeeping is weekly, and there's a fee for air-conditioning, though Wi-Fi is free throughout. The rates may be a bit higher, but the nearby All-4U Apartments are closer to the city center and have more on-site facilities.

Starlight Suiten Hotel
Mérleg utca 6.

This centrally located modern, upper-middle-range property offers 54 spacious apartments and suites. Despite being smack in the city center, the Starlight Suiten is tucked away down a quiet, one-way side street with little traffic. St. Stephen's Basilica, the Chain Bridge, and Szechenyi Square are all within a five-minute walk. The apartments, with tiny kitchenettes, and suites are bright and airy, with air-conditioning, minibars, and flat-screen TVs. But the decor feels a little dated and lacks decorative touches. The hotel has a fitness center with a small range of equipment and a spa with a sauna and steam room. One obvious omission: there's no on-site restaurant, but a bar and cafe provides snacks and drinks. The central location and the large rooms offer good value. For a hipper, more up-to-date look, travelers could try the Estilo Fashion Hotel.

New York Residence Budapest
Osvat utca 2-8

Part of the historic, luxury New York Residence Budapest hotel next door, the New York Residence is a collection of luxury apartments with its own 24-hour reception and all the five-pearl luxury amenities of its neighbor. Unlike the hotel, the 138 residences forgo historic character and period furnishings in favor of a sleek modern decor, and all have full kitchens, ideal for long stays or families. Guests at the residences have access to the facilities next door, including its spa, fitness center, and the opulent New York Café. The Residence has its own breakfast room (continental breakfast is not included), but the only other on-site amenity is a small business corner. Surrounded by old apartments, the hotel isn't in the most appealing neighborhood, and it's located just outside the city center, but there are many shops and restaurants nearby. For the full hotel experience and on-site amenities, some may prefer the aforementioned New York Residence, Autograph Collection, but the rates are considerably higher.

The Three Corners Hotel Art
Kiralyi Pal utca 12

The 36-room, mid-range Three Corners Hotel Art Hotel is a practical base for travelers looking to spend more time exploring Budapest than using the hotel facilities. Rooms are clean with simple decor and basic amenities such as mini-refrigerators and flat-screen TVs. The hotel has a small fitness room and self-serve sauna. There's no full-service restaurant, but breakfast is served daily and is included in the room rate, and there are numerous eateries on the narrow streets around the hotel. The hotel is a five-minute walk from sights such as the National Museum and the Vaci utca shopping street. Travelers looking for meeting rooms and a restaurant should consider the Hotel Erzsebet City Center, which is similarly priced, though it lacks the fitness center here and has plainer decor.

easyHotel Budapest Oktogon
Eoetvoes utca 25/a

Budget travelers looking for a clean bed and a private bathroom near attractions in central Budapest will find them at the easyHotel Budapest Oktogon, but the two-pearl hotel -- based on the same concept as the budget easyJet airline -- offers little else. A concept hotel chain designed around bare-bones rooms and rock-bottom prices, the easyHotel charges guests for amenities on an à la carte basis. Everything from hairdryers to watching TV costs extra. The 59 secure, clean rooms may be a pleasant alternative for those avoiding communal rooms and shared baths at hostels, but you can find more amenities and even some private rooms at the nearby Aventura Boutique Hostel.

Gerloczy Rooms de Lux
Gerloczy Utca 1

Gerloczy is perhaps the closest one can come in the city to the feeling of staying in a friend’s spare quarters, albeit very nice quarters; the upper-middle-range hotel is run by the proprietors of the popular cafe and restaurant on the first floor of a charming Art Nouveau building. The property's 19 individually decorated rooms sit in the center of Pest on a quiet plaza, and have parquet floors, cathedral ceilings on the upper level, and crown moulding. Not all rooms are equal in size and bathroom fittings; guests are advised to request preferences, and to be aware that rooms facing the cafe may receive noise at night.

Hotel Parlament
Kalman Imre utca 19

Hotel Parlament is one of the trendiest upscale hotels in Budapest, and is located in Leopold Town, the business and government hub of central Pest. The hotel's modern interior decor provides a stark contrast from the classic exterior of the building. Bold colors, high ceilings, and unique lighting fixtures and furniture provide a fun setting. The 65 guest rooms are spacious, clean, and minimalistic. There are a wellness center, a bar, a breakfast room with free breakfast, and meeting rooms, but there's no on-site parking. Those who would prefer an Inner City location in Pest should consider the comparable Bohem Art Hotel, which is also often a bit cheaper.

Hotel Nemzeti Budapest - MGallery by Sofitel
Jozsef Korut 4

This upscale hotel is set in an ornate historic building and is conveniently located near restaurants, bars, and shops in the city's Pest side, plus it offers excellent public transit links as there are busses, trams, and a metro station right across the street. The 80 contemporary guest rooms have flat-screen TVs, minibars, and free Wi-Fi, but bathrooms are small -- though Lanvin toiletries and plush robes and slippers are a nice touch. Stylish contemporary interiors include a lobby bar and a chic cafe that serves Hungarian fare as well as free breakfast buffet. Besides a sauna and steam room, there's not much else in terms of features. For something with more features, check out the Hotel President Budapest, which has an indoor pool and fitness center.

Hotel Pension Helios
Liderc utca 5/a

The Hotel Pension Helios is a lower-middle-range, family-run guesthouse located on a hillside in a residential neighborhood overlooking Budapest. There's little within walking distance, and it's a 20-minute bus ride to the city center. Most of the 17 rooms, which include six apartments, open to outdoor spaces with views over the city; apartments have lounge and dining areas with kitchenettes. The hotel serves a daily breakfast with hot and cold dishes, but strangely for this type of accommodation, it's not included in standard rates. Another local, budget-friendly alternative is the Korona Panzio, where breakfast is included.
