Pod Brooklyn

Based on the Japanese-led micro-hotel concept, the mid-range Pod Brooklyn Hotel offers compact, efficiently designed rooms, and limited services -- as a trade-off for very reasonable prices and a stellar Williamsburg location. While all of the 249 modular rooms are teeny, they’re uber-modern and cleverly decked out with flat-screen TVs, work desks, under-bed drawers, and multi-plug tech outlets near bed pillows. However, the shower-over-toilet bathrooms aren’t for everyone. Freebies include Wi-Fi, loaner bikes, and walking tours of Manhattan and Brooklyn. The mezzanine level is a great spot to get some work done or socialize, while the adjacent burger joint serves up breakfast, brunch, and craft beers. All up, Pod Brooklyn is a clean, comfortable -- even somewhat stylish -- option for budget-conscious travelers. As a boutique alternative with a gym, try the Hotel Indigo, though rates are higher.

The Condor Hotel
56 Franklin Ave

The Condor is a solid mid-range hotel offering more affordable rates than other comparable Brooklyn properties. Rooms are fairly spacious and contemporary -- with flat-screen TVs, balconies and plush beds -- and all feature a kitchenette with a microwave, a mini-fridge and a sink. There’s not much in the way of amenities, but freebies such as continental breakfast and Wi-Fi, and discounted rates for Zipcar rental cars parked next door, add value. Just note that the subway is quite a hike from the hotel through an unattractive area, and that the neighborhood is not within walking distance of the Brooklyn action.

NU Hotel
85 Smith St

NU Hotel Brooklyn is an upper-middle-range boutique in downtown Brooklyn close to several subway lines and the Barclays Center. It's walking distance to some great shopping and dining along Atlantic Avenue, but this isn't exactly a tourist destination; it's also right across the street from a detention facility. Its modern rooms are exceptionally posh for a hotel in this range, and some are decorated with murals by local artists. Free breakfast and rental bikes are included. There aren't a ton of hotel options in Brooklyn, but cheaper rates can be found a few blocks away at both Hotel Indigo, and the Sheraton Brooklyn New York Hotel

Hotel RL Brooklyn
1080 Broadway

Located on the border of Bushwick and Bed Stuy, this fresh, hip three-pearl hotel is on the front lines of Brooklyn's ongoing march toward gentrification. That said, the neighborhood still retains significant grit, not to mention an elevated subway train that roars by every few minutes. The hotel's spacious bar fosters a communal spirit, particularly on nights when the stage hosts live music. The downstairs gaming and screening room and roof terrace above provide more social space. Rooms channel the same spirit, with Brooklyn-esque details throughout, including wall-sized vintage photographs. Although few eateries -- and no sights -- are within walking distance, the subway that stops right outside the hotel goes directly into Williamsburg and Lower Manhattan. For another local Brooklyn experience, travelers could consider the Henry Norman Hotel

Henry Norman Hotel

Set in a renovated 19th-century warehouse in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, this boutique hotel has stylish decor with vintage details -- plus knockout Manhattan skyline views. The three-and-a-half-pearl property's location at North Henry Street and Norman Avenue (hence its name) is a little far flung from area hot spots, but its 50 guest rooms feel like loft apartments, with exposed brick walls and mid-century-inspired furniture, and amenities like 42-inch flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, minibars, coffeemakers, and kettles. But bathrooms are far less attractive -- even in Penthouses -- and toiletries are skimpy. Upgraded units add full kitchens, seating areas, and some have private furnished terraces overlooking the city. Highlight features include a rooftop terrace with panoramic views, a gym, and free Wi-Fi throughout, but no on-site restaurant or bar is a major drawback. Travelers looking for a step up can check out Williamsburg's Wythe Hotel.

Wythe Hotel
80 Wythe Ave

With a hopping rooftop bar boasting jaw-dropping views of Manhattan, a wonderful restaurant, and cutting-edge industrial design, the Wythe is a destination unto itself. It’s located near the subway as well as dozens of restaurants, bars, and shops in the heart of trendy Williamsburg. Rooms are spacious and have high pine ceilings, reclaimed wood furnishings, and great amenities, including flat-screen TVs; local, hand-made toiletries; free Wi-Fi, and radiant floor heating. But noise can be a problem, and the lobby and the elevators can get crowded with non-guests on weekends.

Pointe Plaza Hotel
2 Franklin Ave

The Pointe Plaza is a 70-room, mid-range hotel with affordable rates and spacious suites that cater to budget-conscious guests and families, many who are looking for proximity to the Hasidic Jewish community or the music scene of Williamsburg. While the immediate area doesn't offer much in the way of restaurants, shops, or attractions, the hotel provides a handful of services to alleviate that stranded feeling. Morning shuttles take guests to the subway and Times Square while suites allow room to spread out in decent-sized quarters that include separate living areas, kitchens, and free Wi-Fi.

New York Marriott at the Brooklyn Bridge
333 Adams Street

The Marriott is an upper-mid-range hotel catering mostly to business travelers. It features 665 large, bright rooms with comfy beds and high-tech amenities; a wonderful heated indoor pool; and a well-equipped fitness center. It is conveniently located within a block of nine subway lines in busy Downtown Brooklyn, but rates are steep for a hotel located outside Manhattan and there are several pesky extras, including Wi-Fi and parking.

Hotel Indigo
229 Duffield St

There are 128 rooms at this artsy, three-and-a-half-pearl property in the heart of trendy Brooklyn. The Barclays Center and quaint Fort Greene neighborhood are within a short walk, and Manhattan is easily accessible from several nearby subway stations. Cozy, stylish rooms have coffeemakers and free Wi-Fi -- some have great city views or private patios. The on-site Brooklyn Brewhouse serves classic pub fare and breakfast, though it's not included in room rates, and lovely city views are available from the rooftop terrace. Travelers looking for a pool should compare rates at the New York Marriott at the Brooklyn Bridge, though it doesn’t have a boutique vibe.

Hampton Inn Brooklyn/Downtown
125 Flatbush Avenue Ext

The 117-room, mid-range Hampton Inn Brooklyn/Downtown is located on a high-traffic street that's far from both NYC landmarks and the "hipster" parts of Brooklyn. However, guest rooms are relatively chic for a Hampton Inn outpost and include LCD flat-screen TVs and coffeemakers. On-site features like a fitness center, lobby bar, and free hot breakfast add to its appeal. On the downside, rooms on lower floors may experience some noise, and rates are on par with hotels in the middle of Midtown Manhattan. Travelers looking to be closer to tourist attractions may prefer the Hilton Garden Inn Times Square. Those wanting to be closer to the trendy Brooklyn scene, could consider McCarren Hotel & Pool.
