Chine Hotel
25 Boscombe Spa Road

The Chine Hotel is a 79-room, mid-range hotel that's part of the local Bournemouth FJB chain and caters to families. It has a good range of facilities, including a decent restaurant, outdoor pool, and three acres of secluded landscaped gardens. The hotel is set in a grand Victorian building, although it's a little run-down in some areas, with worn carpets and a slight musty smell here and there. Some of the guest rooms are also a bit tired, but all are spacious and many have nice views and balconies. The Chine is located in the quiet Boscombe neighborhood on the outskirts of town, close to a beach, but those looking to be closer into the Bournemouth city center should consider the Green House, Menzies Carlton, or Menzies East Cliff Court.

Norfolk Royale Hotel
Richmond Hill

Norfolk Royale Hotel has been converted from two imposing Victorian Villas and restored to its original Edwardian grandeur, including a stunning Art Nouveau veranda and pretty gardens. The upscale hotel has 95 rooms and suites, all with minibars and cozy, traditional decor. Features include an indoor swimming pool, sauna, and spa, and the hotel is perfectly situated for strolls to the beach and drives to a national park. The wall-to-wall patterned carpeting does date the property somewhat, and it's not the trendiest hang-out in Bournemouth. Still, guests return for the choice location and facilities -- especially the grounds, which have a barbecue area, an outdoor bar, and chic patio heaters.

Park Central Hotel
Exeter Road

Opened in 2010, Park Central Hotel is an upper-middle-range property that's superbly located for the BIC (Bournemouth International Center) and a stone's throw away from the sea. The modern hotel has 48 rooms over four floors, and is home to a seafood restaurant that gets rave reviews from both guests and locals, who visit in droves to eat vast quantities of fruits de mer. Rooms are spotless, and have tea and coffee facilities and flat-screen TVs. Although the hotel could do with a little updating decor-wise -- UK seaside hotels are known for their old-fashioned charms -- it's a solid choice with a top beachside location that's not far from the town center, and comfortable rooms.

Hotel Collingwood, Sure Hotel Collection by Best Western
11 Priory Road

Hotel Collingwood is a cozy, competitively priced, mid-range hotel with 53 rooms over three floors, in the heart of Bournemouth near the beach. The decor is slightly dated, but there're an indoor swimming pool and entertainment in the form of nightly cabarets. The property is popular with travelers who have come to Bournemouth to catch musical acts at the BIC (Bournemouth International Center), or tourists who want to be near Sandbanks and the New Forest National Park. Rooms are basic and clean, with tea kettles and flat-screen TVs; some have pretty picture windows. Rates, too, are pretty standard, so it's not a bad option for a stopover by the Bournemouth beach. It may be worth considering the Cumberland Hotel, an Art Deco property five minutes down the road by car; it has cheaper rates and an outdoor pool overlooking the sea.

Bed & Breakfast by the Beach
7 Burtley Road, Burtley Manor, Southbourne

One of the best B&B's in Bournemouth, Bed and Breakfast by the Beach is independently run by a warm and friendly couple, Chris and John. They're clearly passionate about their business -- which is evident from the way guests come away raving about the pampering they've received. There are four beautifully decorated guest rooms available, each with a flat-screen TV and free Wi-Fi. The mid-range property is five minutes' walking distance from the beach, and is on a good bus route into the center of Bournemouth. Breakfast is luxurious and the choices are endless, from fresh fruit salad and pancakes to full English or Eggs Benedict, served up in a charming conservatory that overlooks the garden. Other freebies include room snacks, freshly baked cakes served daily, and cut flowers in the rooms. Bed and Breakfast by the Beach feels like a home away from home, and is an elegant and memorable place to stay.

Langtry Manor Hotel
26 Derby Road, East Cliff

An upscale, family-owned hotel with a romantic history that dates back to 1877, Langtry Manor was built by King Edward VII as a hideaway to enjoy with his mistress Lillie Langtry. Today, it's one of the most popular pit-stops in Dorset -- thanks to the property being only a five-minute drive from Bournemouth pier, and its kooky rooms that ooze historical character. The 27 room-property has a gourmet restaurant and bar, with a deliciously old world dining room that has a colossal fireplace. The afternoon tea with clotted cream scones is also a big hit with both guests and locals alike. Guests rave about the welcoming and friendly staff, who try to make travelers' experience here as authentically historic as possible; there's really no comparison to other nearby properties.
