Casa Gracia

Travelers get an affordable stay and a choice location in the sweet spot of Barcelona at the Casa Gracia Barcelona Hostel, housed in a six-floor Modernist building at the intersection of Passeig de Gracia and Avinguda Diagonal. Offering a fun and funky feel in its décor and appointments, the Casa Gracia has a charming landscaped patio, shared kitchen, and communal lounge with TV and games. The 81 rooms are clean and basic and come with free Wi-Fi. Dormitory rooms share the room and bathroom with other guests. The friendly proprietors are available 24 hours a day and are ready to help. This upscale hostel is a great value for those willing to forego a few hotel facilities and comforts.

Hotel Via Augusta

The two-pearl Hotel Via Augusta offers good overall value for budget-conscious travelers who don’t mind a 20-minute train ride to see Barcelona’s attractions. Located near the Gracia Metro station and some restaurants, the no frills hotel is quiet and comfortable. Its 80 rooms are clean and well maintained, but they're small and sparsely decorated. Mini-fridges are available on request for an additional fee. The breakfast buffet includes meat and egg dishes, but it’s not included in room rates. Parking and bicycle rentals are available, and there are self-serve laundry facilities and free Wi-Fi. The mid-range Aparthotel Bertran is also about 20 minutes outside downtown Barcelona and has comparable rates, but offers spacious, apartment-style rooms with kitchenettes.

Casa Fuster Hotel

The 105-room Casa Fuster is an upscale historic boutique near high-end shopping and Modernist architecture. The building itself is one of the most prominent examples of this style, with an elaborate façade and ornate marble interiors. Elegant rooms have pastel-colored walls, oversized headboards, and great amenities such as flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, Loewe toiletries, and surround sound systems. Some even have small in-room saunas, balconies and hydro-massage showers. But quarters can be tight, and king-size beds are really two smaller beds pushed together. Hotel features include a Mediterranean restaurant as well as a beautiful rooftop deck with a small pool and gorgeous panoramic views of Barcelona. Beautiful Café Vienes is a favorite among artists, intellectuals and locals, and its weekly jazz nights have performers such as Woody Allen and the New Orleans Rag Trio.

Hotel Catalonia Park Guell

The mid-range Catalonia Park Guell offers 141 tasteful, modern guest rooms, some with large terraces. The hotel's lounge is a bit outdated, but the rooftop terrace with its small plunge pool and panoramic views of the city feels decidedly sleek and stylish. It's located in Barcelona’s Gracia district, and the immediate area around the hotel is quiet and hilly, which may be challenging for some travelers who want to venture out on foot. Guests looking to stay closer to Barcelona’s historic Ciutat Vella can find more contemporary, similarly-priced rooms and amenities at Hotel Lleo.

Generator Barcelona

Not a typical bare-bones basic hostel, the fun and funky Generator Barcelona pulls out all the stops with thoughtful touches and exuberant and colorful decor and design. The features list is big for this type of accommodation, and includes a tapas bar, cocktail bar, continental breakfast (for a fee), TV lounge, reading and game room, and social events with DJs, and art exhibitions. The hostel is actually a combination hotel and hostel, with the hotel wing having its own elevator. The hostel section has both shared dorm rooms and private rooms, while the hotel has private singles and doubles. The five-floor Generator is located in the Gracia District of Barcelona, not far from the Casa Mila, and about a 15-minute walk from the Sagrada Familia. It's an excellent value for budget travelers who want a little extra pizzazz from their hostel -- or hotel.
