The One Barcelona
Provenca, 277

The One Barcelona is an 88-room luxury boutique hotel with an enviable city-center location near Las Ramblas, Passeig de Gracia, and Plaza Catalunya. Sophisticated, neutral-tone rooms and suites have modern technology, minibars, bathrobes, and swish marble bathrooms. Floor-to-ceiling windows bring in light and city views, and most suites have balconies and freestanding tubs. A Mediterranean restaurant and cocktail bar, seasonal and scenic rooftop pool and bar areas, and spa are big draws. Expect free Wi-Fi, 24-hour room service, and free access to the spa's Finnish sauna, heated plunge pool, and small 24-hour gym. Meeting rooms, limo service to the airport, and valet parking are available for a fee. For a more intimate stay, consider the 28-room luxury Mercer Hotel Barcelona, though it doesn't have a spa.

Hotel Barcelona Catedral

Hotel Barcelona Catedral is a contemporary find in the city's Gothic Quarter, where winding streets and narrow alleys lead to distinctive Roman-style buildings. The hotel features sharp edges and clean lines, adorned in whites, tans and slate grays throughout. Cozy rooms have soft lighting, with modern lamps that cast a twisting, branch-like glow against the walls. Each room is equipped with modern amenities, and the bathrooms are clean and spacious. The hotel features a long rooftop pool and three on-site bars/restaurants. There is no spa, but there is a small fitness center. Bonus: On Sundays, the hotel offers free tours of the Quarter. Overall, it's a good choice for both tourists wanting to explore the city, as well as business travelers -- the hotel has a very nice business center and multiple meeting rooms.

Hispanos 7 Suiza

Hispanos 7 Suiza is a clean, updated hotel made up of 20 apartments in a residential area of Eixample. A good fit for families who want to do their own cooking while in Barcelona, all the rooms have full kitchens equipped with ovens, microwaves, and dishwashers, and there are supermarkets within walking distance. The hotel is near the famous La Sagrada Familia and two metro stations. There are charming vintage automobiles on display and a cozy restaurant serves Catalan specialties. Rooms at the similarly priced Hotel Barcelona Center do not have full kitchens, but the hotel does have a small fitness center.

HCC Montblanc

This hotel, part of the Spanish HCC chain, has an extremely central location right by the Placa de Catalunya. It’s not the trendiest property, but the clean and basic accommodations, plus a piano bar and small outdoor pool, make the hotel a great value for the area.

HCC Taber

The 92-room HCC Taber is a mid-range hotel near the Passeig de Gracia, one of Barcelona’s premier shopping streets. The location is the hotel's biggest selling point as guest rooms are generic, although some do have balconies. The hotel’s services and amenities include meeting rooms, a bar, and a breakfast buffet (for a fee). Guests looking for a similarly priced hotel with more personality should try Cien Hotel just around the corner, where rooms have a rustic, chic vibe.

Catalonia Ramblas

Housed in the former headquarters of a renowned local newspaper, the Catalonia Ramblas features an unusual facade with a leaf motif that dates back to 1903. Inside, the decor is modern and minimalist, but lacks the historic charm of the hotel's exterior. Suites are spacious and some even have terraces with tiny splash pools. Standard rooms, however, feel a bit cramped. A chic courtyard with a pool and snack bar draws the crowds in the warmer months, but the hotel's main draw is its central location in the heart of Barcelona. Such a prime spot, however, means that the price tends to be a bit steep.

Melia Barcelona Sarria
Avenida de Sarria 50

The 333-room, upscale Melia Barcelona Sarria is designed with business travelers in mind, with a modern high-rise feel and fully equipped on-site convention center. Although the atmosphere is not intimate and lacks local color, modern guest rooms have every amenity, and some have great city views. The Level, an exclusive floor devoted to the finer things (think tapas and cocktails, panoramic views, and personal concierge service), is available for guests wanting a more luxurious experience. The on-site Yhi Wellness Spa is a serene place to relax after a long day of meetings, and the lovely fitness center is open 24 hours. The hotel is not in a popular tourist area, but cabs, buses, trolleys, and the metro are convenient and provide easy access to all Barcelona.

Senator Barcelona Spa Hotel
C/Cardenal Reig 11

The Senator Barcelona Spa Hotel is a peaceful property located outside the city center within walking distance of the Camp Nou stadium. The less populated location offers an appealing, if slightly dated, spa and massage center complete with an indoor grotto-like pool and a rooftop outdoor pool. There is a massive breakfast buffet and a charming piano bar on-site. Rooms are clean and air-conditioned with minibars and kettles, but Wi-Fi is weak and there's a pesky fee for spa access.

Gallery Hotel
Rosello 249

The 110-room boutique Gallery Hotel belongs to a small Spanish chain, but there is nothing cookie-cutter about this upscale property. Set a 15 minutes' stroll from Las Ramblas, the hotel is perfect for tourists and close enough to the downtown to suit business travelers. The peaceful rooftop, with a pool and bar/grill, is an ideal spot for guests to cool off and recharge. Rooms are sleek and upscale, and, like the rest of the hotel, are decorated with original contemporary art and photography on the walls.

Hotel Del Mar

The 72-room Hotel Del Mar is a budget property with an excellent Barceloneta location, within walking distance of numerous shops, restaurants, bars, and the beach. It's also well situated for taking public transportation to places farther afield, as the Barceloneta Metro station is a two-minute walk away. Rooms are nothing fancy and a bit dated, but they're clean and come with air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, and safes (the latter for a fee). Some have small balconies, and the Matrimonial room has a large furnished rooftop balcony overlooking the city. Breakfast is provided for a fee, and there's a TV room for group lounging. Travelers wanting budget digs in the Barri Gotic might check out the Hotel California, which offers free breakfast and a bar, but can be noisier.
