W Barcelona
Placa de la Rosa dels Vents, 1

The 473-room W Barcelona is a luxury property that's enviably located on Barcelona's beach, close to the port. It's a 10-minute walk to the vibrant Barceloneta neighborhood and a 20-minute walk to the nearest metro, but most guests are here for the beach -- oh, and the views. In a city of fabulous vistas, the W has some of the best, ranging from sea to city. Rooms are spacious and ultra-hip, and come with expected modern amenities like flat-screen TVs and premium bath products. Two restaurants and several bars get good reviews, as do the spa and fitness center. The W is just across from the Eurostars Grand Marina Hotel, which has Mediterranean views for lower rates, but it lacks the W's edge and spa.

Capri by Fraser Barcelona

The upper-middle-range Capri by Fraser Barcelona has 97 spacious apartments in Barcelona's Sant Marti. It's a bit removed from major attractions, but the Marina Metro station is five-minute walk away. The studios and apartments are modern and include kitchens or kitchenettes, and the public areas have a hip, relaxed vibe as well. Breakfast and lunch are served on-site, and there's a bar in the lobby. The rooftop solarium is a nice spot for relaxing outside, and a basic fitness center serves the energetic. Laundry facilities are free, and there are meeting rooms and a business center for corporate travelers. Those who'd like to be closer to the beach in the same neighborhood could check out the GBB Hotel 4 Barcelona, but its rooms don't have kitchens.

Hostal Grau
Ramelleres 27, Raval

Hostal Grau is a charming, three-pearl option located close to Las Ramblas and Plaza de Catalunya. It's within walking distance of numerous restaurants, bars, shops, and attractions, and the metro is close by as well. The family-owned property emphasizes eco-friendly practices throughout, and has been LEED certified for its efforts. The 26 boho-inspired rooms are simple, but all have en-suite bathrooms, air-conditioning, safes, and free Wi-Fi. Upgraded rooms add flat-screen TVs, and some have mini-fridges, microwaves, and balconies. Free tea and coffee are available all day, and free wine is served in the evening. Travelers looking for more on-site features in the same price range could check out the boutique Hotel Ciutat de Barcelona, which has a restaurant and bar, plus a rooftop terrace with a pool.

Negresco Princess Hotel
Roger de Lluria 16-18

The 129-room Negresco Princess Hotel is an upscale Eixample hotel close to Plaza Catalunya and surrounded by numerous restaurants, bars, and shops. Modern rooms are on the small side, and come with flat-screen TVs and air-conditioning. Some have gorgeous city views from furnished balconies. The restaurant and bar serve all meals and there's a hip rooftop bar with gorgeous city views is especially popular. Of course, the heated pool is another major draw. The fitness center is small and limited, and there's also a sauna. Travelers looking for a place offering more spacious rooms could check out the Suites Avenue, which offers apartment-style rooms, though amenities are limited to a rooftop pool and small fitness center.

Catalonia Eixample 1864

This 124-room historic building first graced the streets of Barcelona in 1864 and is one of the city's very first residential buildings. It's been declared a historic monument within the Eixample district. The exterior features colorful but muted paintings, which set it apart from nearby buildings. But inside, while the rooms are up-to-date with flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi, they're fairly standard in design. The decor isn't flashy or ultra modern, and the bathrooms are basic with plastic shower curtains -- and small. Terrace rooms offer a bit more space, with open balconies that offer views of nearby buildings. A decent restaurant and free daily breakfast are about the only extras here -- there's no fitness center, spa, or pool. The central location in Eixample is ideal, but guests looking for more amenities might check out the nearby -- and comparably priced -- Barcelona Center.

Hotel Midmost

Three-and-a-half-pearl Hotel Midmost is located right in the heart of Barcelona, within a five-minute walk of Las Ramblas and Plaza Catalunya. It's a historic property that blends traditional and urban styles, and the common areas have a pleasantly serene atmosphere that's a welcome contrast to the busy streets outside. The rooftop terrace is a particularly great space to kick back, with a pool and tapas bar, and the hotel's breakfast is popular for its variety. The 56 rooms have a velvety classic style, plus coffeemakers, air-conditioning, and free Wi-Fi. There are meeting rooms and a cozy lounge with internet access, and spa treatments can be arranged. Travelers looking for a more thoroughly modern finish could check out Olivia Plaza Hotel nearby, which has similar facilities.

Hotel Via Augusta

The two-pearl Hotel Via Augusta offers good overall value for budget-conscious travelers who don’t mind a 20-minute train ride to see Barcelona’s attractions. Located near the Gracia Metro station and some restaurants, the no frills hotel is quiet and comfortable. Its 80 rooms are clean and well maintained, but they're small and sparsely decorated. Mini-fridges are available on request for an additional fee. The breakfast buffet includes meat and egg dishes, but it’s not included in room rates. Parking and bicycle rentals are available, and there are self-serve laundry facilities and free Wi-Fi. The mid-range Aparthotel Bertran is also about 20 minutes outside downtown Barcelona and has comparable rates, but offers spacious, apartment-style rooms with kitchenettes.

Sir Victor Hotel

For an upscale property in the Eixample neighborhood, near some of Barcelona's best dining and shopping, Hotel Omm is hard to beat. A suitable choice for business or leisure travelers, the hotel has all the amenities one would expect of a luxury property: a rooftop swimming pool with city views, a hot nightclub with table service, a spa that’s open daily, and the Michelin-starred restaurant Roca Moo. Rooms are elegant and spacious, some with balconies and views and all with flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi.

Leonardo Hotel Barcelona Gran Via

The Hotel HCC Open is a mid-range hotel in the Eixample neighborhood, within walking distance of the metro and many of Barcelona’s major landmarks. Overall, this isn’t the most stylish hotel, but business travelers and tourists looking for a decent place to rest after long days of sightseeing or business meetings can find solid, if barebones, accommodations here. The 100 rooms are basic and have generic decor, but they're quiet and well-maintained. Amra Barcelona Gran Via is a good alternative for those looking for more contemporary rooms in the Eixample. It offers fresh design elements and a more intimate, boutique vibe,  often at a lower price point.

Novotel Barcelona City
Avenida Diagonal 201 Entrada por Ciutat de Granada

The 264-room Novotel Barcelona City is a luxury chain hotel situated in the Poblenou neighborhood, about 20 minutes from the heart of the city via public transport. The hotel's best feature is its 19th-floor rooftop terrace, which includes a seasonal outdoor pool and hot tub, as well as a bar and lovely lounge spaces. An on-site Mediterranean restaurant serves lunch and dinner, plus a breakfast buffet is available, as is room service -- but these extras can be pricey. Rooms are tasteful and contemporary, if somewhat generic, with minibars, flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi. Guests on the market for a luxury hotel in this area may want to compare rates with the Silken Diagonal Barcelona right across the street, which offers similar amenities including a rooftop pool -- but lacks a fitness center.
