Anantara Sathorn Bangkok Hotel
36 Narathiwart-Ratchanakarin Road, Yannawa

A 38-story tower set back from a heavily trafficked thoroughfare in Bangkok's business district, the Anantara Bangkok Sathorn is a luxury hotel in a slightly odd location that attracts business travelers, well-heeled families, and high-end tour groups. The numerous features include four eating spots (including the impressive rooftop Zoom Sky Bar & Restaurant), a fully equipped gym, a rooftop terrace pool, tennis courts, extensive business and event space, and a kids' club. The luxurious rooms have private balconies with views over the city's rooftops, and some of the suites even have kitchenettes and dining areas. For business guests and those preferring a more personalized experience, the Kasara Executive Club lounge -- open to guests who book Kasara level rooms -- includes free breakfast, a daily cocktail hour, and more, although the rooms don't differ much from the regular rooms.

Siam Kempinski Hotel Bangkok
991/9, Rama I Road, Pathum Wan, Pathum Wan

The 300-room Siam Kempinski is one of Bangkok's most opulent hotels. It's a five pearl property located smack in the city center, behind the Siam Paragon luxury mall. Elegant rooms -- set around a garden oasis with saltwater swimming pools flowing through it -- are decked out in contemporary Thai decor and feature silk curtains and paintings as well as amenities such as daily stocked minibars and big flat-screen TVs. Some rooms give direct access into the large meandering pool that is the centerpiece of the property. There is a bright, well-equipped fitness center with shiny wood floors. Siam Kempinski is also the home of the acclaimed Sra Bua by Kiin Kiin, by a Michelin-rated chef. The opulence here comes at a hefty price tag, but it is comparable to other five pearl elite properties in the city. With its gardens, pool, and private feel, this is more like an island resort than a city hotel. Wi-Fi is free throughout.

Centre Point Hotel Silom
1522/2 Soi Kaysorn 1, Charoenkrung Rd.

Centre Point Sillom is an upscale, family-friendly hotel with 214 rooms over 26 floors. It's close to the Chao Phraya river and is situated about a five minutes' walk from Wat Yan Nawa -- an old Buddhist temple dating back to the Ayutthaya period. It has great transport links, with the BTS sky train station (Saphan Tak Sin) minutes away from the lobby door. The hotel is handily located on top of a Robinson Department store -- which is a modern mall -- and there's a Tops Supermarket right across the street. The hotel feels modern and its facilities are fantastic. It has a great gym, beautiful outdoor pool on the eighth floor, and a tasty, extensive free breakfast. The rooms are contemporary and large -- with the added bonus of kitchenettes  -- and have huge bathrooms with electronic toilet seats. The hotel is just around the corner from one of the most luxurious hotels in Bangkok -- the Mandarin Oriental -- ipso facto, guests at the Centre Point Silom are pretty much enjoying the same five-pearl location for a fraction of the price.

Galleria 10 Sukhumvit by Compass Hospitality
21, Sukhumvit Soi 10, Sukhumvit Road, Klongtoey

A trendy, modern boutique hotel with 188 fun, urban- and music-themed rooms, the Galleria 10 Hotel is popular with hip young travelers, especially couples. Located in Bangkok's trendy Sukhumvit neighborhood, it has two restaurants and bars that are popular with scene-y locals: one on the rooftop, next to the pool, with panoramic city views, and the other on the ground floor, where the popular daily breakfast buffet is served (for a fee). There's also a small rooftop fitness center, but no spa. Specialty rooms include extra perks like free breakfast, free drinks at a nearby blues bar, and free souvenirs. The hotel is within walking distance of nightlife, one of Bangkok's luxury malls, and both a skytrain and subway station. Check out the Evergreen Place Bangkok, an upscale hotel near Chulalongkorn University with apartment-style suites, for a longer-term, lower-key option.

Lamphu Tree House
155, Prachatipatai Road, Ban Phan Thom, Phra Nakhon, Chaleam Wan Chat Bridge

The three-pearl Lamphu Tree House sits on the Lamphu Canal away from the busy tourist areas on a pedestrian-only street in the historic district. Traditional Thai design is evident in the Thai silks and woodwork of this boutique hotel. While some rooms have balconies, jetted tubs, and canal views, others lack windows. All rooms feature teakwood accents, and have mini-fridges with free bottled water. There is a small outdoor pool with a patio off to the side. A rooftop terrace has lounge seating and tables, and impressive views of the city. The hotel has a small business center and free Wi-Fi.

LiT BANGKOK Hotel
36/1, Soi Kasem San 1, Rama 1 Road

The 79-room upscale LiT Bangkok hotel is a standout among the city's design hotels, with stylish guest rooms and quirky and distinctive accents throughout. There are many wonderful on-site features here, including the elegant Kiriya Spa, a luxe outdoor pool, excellent BCDE Thai restaurant, and Fiesta Steppe terrace bar, all of which exude a thoughtful attention to detail. The hotel is convenient to central Bangkok shopping and mass transit, but guests looking to be closer to historic Old Bangkok sights may want to try Villa Phra Sumen for an intimate, design-conscious experience, though prices will be slightly higher.

Salil Hotel Sukhumvit Soi 11
21/4 Soi Sukhumvit 11 , Sukhumvit Road, Klongton Nua, Wattana

One of the best deals in Bangkok, this mid-range local chain is located in Bangkok’s hip Soi 11 area, full of bars, restaurants, and nightlife. Some rooms are a bit small compared to other hotels in Bangkok, but all are immaculately clean, with a whimsical yet elegant style. The hotel has a charming coffee shop with a street-side terrace, and the restaurant serves Thai and international cuisine. The area is better suited to adults than children due to the many bars and nightlife around, and both leisure and business travelers will enjoy the hotel’s close proximity to public transportation.

Grande Centre Point Hotel Ratchadamri
153 / 2 Soi Mahatlek Luang 1, Ratchadamri Road

An upscale hotel located in Siam Square in the quiet neighborhood of Ratchaprasong, minutes away from the BTS Skytrain Station, the Grande Centre Point Hotel has 526 rooms over fifty floors. All rooms have full-size refrigerators, microwaves, and washer/dryers, making Grande Centre Point an excellent choice for longer stays. The hotel isn't a place where you can pop downstairs and find bustling Bangkok at the door, but one Skytrain stop in either direction will take you somewhere interesting, including to the major Siam shopping centers -- MBK and the Platinum. This hotel has a modern fitness center and large pool with an inset whirlpool, but Cape House Serviced Apartments, a few minutes' walk away, has cheaper rates and rooms that also have kitchenettes, so it's worth considering.

The hotel has excellent on-site features like Medinii Restaurant and Axis & Spin Sky Bar, which draw locals and guests alike. Free breakfast buffet, a stunning rooftop pool, and modern fitness center add value to a stay here. Guests looking to stay near the Chao Phraya River should try Centre Point Silom, which has similarly priced rooms and excellent river views in the trendy Silom area.
