Baiyoke Suite Hotel
130 Rajprarop Road, Rajthevee

The Baiyoke Suite Hotel is a large, budget property high up in a tower right in the midst of central Bangkok. Not to be confused with the neighboring Baiyoke Tower, Bangkok's tallest building and also a hotel, the Baiyoke Suite is also quite tall, with a 43rd-floor restaurant overlooking the city. There are 255 rooms here, all of them spacious suites with stocked minibars and simple decor that includes dining tables and sofas. Rooms are somewhat dim and don't have free Wi-Fi, but are a great value for this part of town. The hotel also has an open-air swimming pool, a small fitness center, meeting facilities, and a business center corner. In addition to the sky-high restaurant, there is a cafe specializing in halal food, both Thai and international.

Dream Bangkok
10 Sukhumvit Soi 15, Kloengtoey Nua, Wattana

With its signature blue-lit rooms and sceney rooftop pool, the Dream Bangkok is part of the grown-up, hip Dream chain. One of the city's original concept hotels, the Dream has 195 modern rooms, a Thai-fusion restaurant with neon lighting, and a lively bar with a popular happy hour that attracts locals and guests alike. In addition to a luxury spa and state-of-the-art fitness center, there's also a complimentary tuk tuk shuttle to a major nearby shopping center with public transportation connections. Regular events are held at the bars, including salsa lessons, live music, and DJ sessions. It’s a bit further from Sukhumvit Road than other hotels, but the surrounding area is pleasant, with plenty of restaurants and other hotels. Compare rates with the neighboring Four Points by Sheraton Bangkok, Sukhumvit 15, which has a popular, casual bar serving local and international beers.

Royal President
43, 47/1 Sukhumvit Soi 15

The upscale 186-room Royal President Bangkok sits on a side street off Sukhumvit Road, a major artery that's home to many bars, restaurants, and shops, and is within a 15-minute walk of two Skytrain stations; the hotel offers free tuk-tuk service to these stations, Sukhumvit Road, and the Terminal 21 Shopping Mall). The hotel has a fitness center with cardio and weight-training equipment, a business center with a meeting room, a pool and whirlpool, and a restaurant. Standard Rooms include large safes, minibars, coffeemakers, flat-screen TVs, separate bathtub and showers, and free Wi-Fi. Deluxe and Superior Rooms have kitchenettes with full refrigerators and microwaves. Rates are reasonable for this central location, but the property lacks nice views and a bar.

I-Residence Hotel Silom
93, Soi Naradhiwas Rajanagarindra 3, Silom, Bang Rak

The I-Residence Hotel Silom is a modern, mid-range downtown hotel in the business district with a rooftop pool that offers spectacular city views. A BTS Skytrain station sits across the street. While the area is convenient, it's crowded and loud, and street-side rooms can be noisy. Most of the rooms have been updated with built-in furniture that maximizes space, include microwaves, and bathrooms with separate tubs and showers. In-room Wi-Fi is free, and breakfast, which is served on the rooftop, is included in the room rate (breakfast gets so-so reviews). There's also a small fitness room with a limited range of equipment, a business center/Internet corner, and a shuttle service for a fee.

Legacy Suites Hotel Sukhumvit by Compass Hospitality
12,14 Sukhumvit Soi 29

The upper-middle-range Legacy Suites Bangkok consists of stylish apartment-style suites with kitchenettes. It has a central location in Sukhumvit but is nestled on a dead-end street that receives little noise or traffic. Bathrooms have soaking tubs and glassed-in showers. Extras like bathrobes, slippers, and washers/dryers are also available. A major highlight of the Legacy Suites is the blue tile outdoor pool that has a kids' area and a whirlpool; many hotels at this price point don't have a pool at all. There's also a rooftop sports field and a fitness center with a wide range of cardio and weight-training equipment, and a business center. Breakfast is included in the room rate, and in-room Wi-Fi is free, but guests complain about the slow connection. Still, for a hotel with this many features and extras, rates are competitive for what you get, even for Bangkok.

Courtyard by Marriott Bangkok
155/1 Soi Mahadlekluang 1, Ratchadamri Road

Opened in 2013, the 316-room Courtyard by Marriott Hotel Bangkok tower is a modern, high-end chain hotel with an outdoor pool, business-catering facilities, and modern, warmly decorated rooms with perks like iPod docks. The huge lobby would do as the backdrop for a recent Bond movie, while the rooms are amongst the largest in Bangkok. The pool, gym, and top-notch restaurants inject some pragmatism into the hotel's sleek, minimalist design. The check-in process is notably easy, accompanied by free welcome drinks, but the glass-walled peekaboo bathrooms in rooms aren't for everyone. The hotel isn't right in the middle of the shopping district, and a short walk or a few stops on the metro are necessary to get most places, but the major historical sightseeing area is only 20 minutes away.

Sathorn Vista, Bangkok - Marriott Executive Apartments
1 Sathorn Soi 3 South Sathorn Road, Thungmahamek, Sathorn

Designed with long-term guests in mind, the upscale Sathorn Vista is composed of large, executive apartments with full kitchens, washers and dryers, and even vacuum cleaners. Priced to match Bangkok’s highest end hotels, the property offers a lot of space for the money, not to mention a lovely outdoor pool, two tasty restaurants, meeting rooms, and a kids' play area. Situated just off of busy Sathorn Road, with public transit a 10- to 15-minute walk away, the hotel maintains a quiet, suburban feel amidst a very urban setting, making it well-suited to both business travelers and families. One of the few downsides is a fee for breakfast. Another solid business hotel option is the nearby Banyan Tree Bangkok, which has a rooftop pool and some spa-style bathrooms.

Centara Grand at CentralWorld
999/99 Rama 1 Road, Pathumwan

The luxury Centara Grand & Bangkok Convention Center at CentralWorld Hotel has 505 large rooms with stunning Bangkok views and is attached to one of the largest malls on earth, CentralWorld. From Red Sky, a rooftop bar and restaurant, to the hotel’s resort-worthy pool and on-site SPA Cenvaree, many aspects of this property make a memorable impression. Rooms are contemporary and comfortable, even if they aren’t impeccably chic compared to other four-and-a-half pearl properties in Bangkok, and the hotel’s Ploenchit-Chidlom location is extremely convenient to major sights and landmarks. Guests looking for a luxury hotel closer to the Chao Phraya River should try Ramada Plaza Bangkok Menam Riverside, which offers similar amenities though without Centara Grand’s central location.

VIE Hotel Bangkok, MGallery Hotel Collection
117/39-40 Phaya Thai Rd., Ratchathewi

Located in the heart of Bangkok, the VIE Hotel Bangkok is a high-end, art-inspired hotel that caters especially to travelers who want to be within throwing distance of many of the city's most famous shopping centers. Rooms are spacious and modern, with a clean-lined Asian-inspired style, and all overlook the city's rooftops. The rooftop pool is a welcome respite from the city outside, and there are also three restaurants, a fitness center, and a full-service spa. Extensive meeting and event facilities are there for business travelers, the skytrain stop down the street makes the location especially convenient. There's also a free tuk-tuk service to the nearby malls.

Chatrium Hotel Riverside Bangkok
28 Charoenkrung Soi 70, Wat Phraya Krai, Bang Kho Laem

The upscale Chatrium Hotel Riverside Bangkok is a serene and stylish stay in a quiet location south of most of the hotels on the Chao Phraya river. Located near the bustling Asiatique Night Bazaar, the hotel has a private shuttle boat to make getting to and from the city center easy -- not that there is any great hurry to leave, as each of the 320 luxury rooms has a kitchenette and private balcony with river views, and there's a riverside infinity pool. Foodies will be happy here, with fine dining in the sky at the Silver Waves Chinese restaurant on the 36th floor. For a waterfront, resort-style hotel, the Chatrium offers good value when compared with other riverside hotels.
