Batman Fawkner Inn
35-39 Cameron St

The 40-room Batman Fawkner Inn is a budget property located in the center of Launceston within walking distance of restaurants, shops, and attractions. It's located in one of the city's oldest buildings and offers two types of bright and simple accommodations: dorm-like rooms with bunk beds, and private rooms with TVs, coffeemakers, and mini-fridges. All have en-suite bathrooms. A communal kitchen provides a stove, dishwasher, and refrigerator, and a lounge area has a TV, sofas, and comfy chairs where guests can hang out. Guests get free passes to the downstairs nightclub, but many are bothered by the noise. For travelers on a tight budget, this is the best option in town.

Stamford Grand Adelaide
Grand Hotel 2 Jetty Rd

The upper-middle-range Stamford Grand Adelaide is a lovely property directly on the white-sand Glenelg Beach, though it falls below its advertised five-pearl status. It's surrounded by vibrant beach life and a tram outside runs to downtown Adelaide. Common spaces are traditional, while the 220 rooms are outfitted in serene, contemporary decor. They're well-equipped with ergonomic work spaces, kettles, flat-screen TVs, and irons, plus upgraded ocean-facing rooms have sensational views. Restaurant popularity dwindles at breakfast, but sunset cocktails at the bars are a favorite -- although weekend noise from them reaches rooms. A swish pool, hot tub, and gym complete the leisure facilities, and function spaces make the hotel a popular wedding destination. With an outdoor pool, the downtown Adelaide Rockford is a good city alternative.

Seawall Apartments
21 - 25 South Esplanade, rear access Oldham Street
Victoria Hotel
135 Esplanade Brighton

Victoria Hotel is a budget option right in Singapore's city center. There's little on-site save for a hair salon, but the hotel is close to public transportation and there are plenty of shopping and dining options -- including a couple of complexes with eclectic food courts -- right outside the hotel. The Standard Rooms are small and general renovations are needed throughout the hotel -- stained carpets and moldy bathroom tiles are not uncommon sights. The nearby Hotel 81-Bugis is equally slim on amenities, but has more contemporary rooms at similar rates.
