Wildman Wilderness Lodge
2393 Point Stuart Road, Point Stuart

The Wildman Wilderness Lodge is a luxury boutique hotel located deep in the heart of the Mary River Wetlands. The Wildman is for guests who want an outback experience that's as glamorous as possible. The facilities and 25 rooms take full advantage of the striking views. Two types of rooms are available: stylish Habitats with air-conditioning and modern amenities or Instagram-worthy Family Safari Tents which feel more like glamping than camping. Facilities include a posh lounge, a chic pool, and a relaxed fine dining restaurant serving outback-inspired cuisine. Breakfast and a three-course dinner are included in rates. Customizable outback trips are wildly popular. For something with regular campsites, that's still conveniently located for the outback, check rates at Mary River Wilderness Retreat & Caravan Park

Rydges Tradewinds Cairns
137 Esplanade, Cairns City QLD 4870, Australia

The 246-room Rydges Tradewinds Cairns is a popular upper-middle-range hotel that is in need of an update. Located on the waterfront with easy access to the beautiful esplanade, this property has an excellent setting and a knowledgeable staff that can arrange tours and airport transfers, but the rooms are tired and some guests complain about cleanliness. A range of features -- such as a large swimming pool, a spa, and decent dining choices -- are appealing, but dated decor and lack of a fitness center may push guests towards other local options.

Mediterranean All Suite Hotel
81 Cavenagh St, Darwin City NT 0800, Australia

The Richardson Hotel & Spa
32 Richardson St, West Perth WA 6005, Australia

The Richardson Hotel & Spa is one of the top-rated hotels in Perth. Located less than 10 minutes from King’s Park, this luxury property has 74 rooms and outdoes -- and outprices -- most of the  competition when it comes to room size, amenities, and location. Opus restaurant serves French-inspired Australian cuisine, and the on-site spa offers a broad menu of services beyond  massages and facials. Guest rooms are large, and all have separate sleeping and living areas. Balcony rooms on high floors have views of the botanic gardens. But families may prefer the luxury Hyatt Regency Perth, which has kid-friendly features.

Inter City Motel
875 Wellington St, West Perth WA 6005, Australia

If its name doesn’t conjure up a vision of a dumpy, urban, budget motel, the actual sight of Inter City will probably do the trick. Only travelers who really need to be in Burnaby (and who are somewhat desperate for a place to stay), should consider this place. Grounds feel pretty desolate, but there are some attempts at brightening the place up with flower beds and hanging plants near the front office. Guest rooms, however, are very worn and dirty, with torn fabric and odors. Coughing up a few extra dollars to stay elsewhere is worth the money. We'd say you get what you pay for, but at Inter City Motel, you don't get much, and rates can be surprisingly high.

Somerset on the Pier Hobart
Elizabeth St Pier

Located in a revamped 1930s warehouse on a pier jutting into the harbor, this upper-middle-range property has modern apartments and a great location within a short walk of restaurants, bars, shops, and attractions. The 56 split-level one- and two-bedroom apartments come with separate living and dining areas, washer/dryers, and kitchens with stovetops and microwaves, but some have bathrooms downstairs from the bedrooms, which can be inconvenient. All premier apartments have balconies overlooking River Derwent and Sullivans Cove. A restaurant and bar is next door, but there are no other real amenities on-site aside from a lounge area. Although its rooms lack kitchens, the Henry Jones Art Hotel is a good alternative with two restaurants, a gym, and laundry room.

Grand Chancellor Hotel Hobart
1 Davey St

The 244-room Grand Chancellor Hotel Hobart is a four-pearl property with an ideal location overlooking beautiful Hobart Harbor. Guests can walk to numerous restaurants, bars, shops, art galleries, and other attractions. Rooms are modern and simple, equipped with flat-screen TVs, minibars, and tea/coffee makers. They face either the mountains or the harbor, and some of the harbor views are particularly stunning. The restaurant gets good reviews, and there's a snazzy lobby lounge as well. The indoor pool on the 10th floor is a lovely place for relaxing, and extensive conference space accommodates groups of various sizes. The largest can handle 1,100 people. Travelers looking for a hotel with more character could check out the Henry Jones Art Hotel, but rates there are quite a bit higher.

The Henry Jones Art Hotel
25 Hunter St

The Henry Jones Art Hotel is a 56-room upscale property housed in a renovated jam factory dating back to 1804. Modern features blend with the building's historic stone walls and rough-hewn timber, though its the 500 pieces of original local art throughout that add the most personality. The hotel sits right on Hobart's beautiful waterfront, close to restaurants, shops, and attractions. All rooms combine historic character with modern conveniences and design. Some have special stainless steel and glass spa bathrooms, and some look directly out on the harbor. The signature restaurant serves fresh local fare, and the cafe and bar also focus on local products. Travelers looking for apartment-style accommodations in the area could check out the Salamanca Wharf Hotel, a sharp alternative with slightly lower rates.

Salamanca Inn
10 Gladstone Street

The three-and-a-half-pearl Salamanca Inn is located in the heart of Hobart's historic district, near the city's iconic harbor, art galleries, shops, and restaurants. It consists of 60 suites that are simple and contemporary, and equipped with flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, and kitchenettes. The restaurant serves locally-sourced steak and seafood dishes, and a continental breakfast buffet for a fee, and there's a bar serving local beers and cocktails. A small indoor pool and hot tub are a nice addition on the hotel's top floor, but there's no fitness center or spa. Several modern meeting rooms are on-site, and Wi-Fi is free throughout the property. Travelers wanting just a few more features might also consider the Grand Chancellor Hotel, which adds beautiful harbor views and a modern fitness center.
