Atlanta Marriott Marquis
265 Peachtree Center Avenue

This massive upper-middle-range Marriott property, housed in a high-rise, makes for a convenient base in downtown Atlanta for travelers who don't mind the impersonal nature of a large chain. It's about a 15-minute walk to attractions like the Georgia Aquarium and CNN Center. The 1663 guest rooms come in a wide selection of categories, including ones with modern air purification systems. A hotel of this size means that there are plenty of features, including an indoor/outdoor pool, fitness and spa facilities, extensive meeting space, and a couple of dining options and bars, such as a steakhouse and Starbucks. Parking is pricey though, as is breakfast, but Wi-Fi is free. For something on a smaller scale that's more personal, check out the nearby Ellis Hotel, a historic boutique on Peachtree Street.

Glenn Hotel, Autograph Collection

This stylish, 110-room boutique in Downtown Atlanta, part of Marriott's high-end Autograph Collection, is a hotel with a conscience: It's inside an adaptive reuse historical building; rooms have smart thermostats to conserve energy; high-end H20 bath products are organic; and the linens are fair trade. Although standard rooms are on the small side for the city, and can be a bit dark, they come with iPod docks and (albeit small) flat-screen TVs, as well as contemporary, upscale decor. The hotel's rooftop bar -- which boasts stunning views of the city -- is a highlight.

Hilton Atlanta

With 1,242 rooms, the behemoth Hilton Atlanta features the quality amenities travelers expect from the Hilton brand. In this towering hotel the spacious rooms are contemporary (if a tad generic) and have flat-screen TVs, and all the amenities of a big hotel are present: a well-equipped fitness center, outdoor pool, tennis courts, and even a rooftop running track. Parking is expensive and there's a fee for Wi-Fi, but the downtown location is convenient.

The Highland Inn
60 Kerk Street Bethlehem

The budget Highland Inn sits in trendy Poncey-Highland, a neighborhood full of independently owned cafes, shops, and restaurants. The 80 guest rooms are no-frills but include free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and microwaves -- some have full stoves. Built in 1927, the inn is quaint and charming -- or simply old, depending on one's perspective -- and its quirkiness might not appeal to all guests. Note that there's no elevator, and bathrooms are cramped and could use some updating -- guests have complained about worn caulking and water-stained fixtures. Travelers seeking a more standard hotel at budget-friendly rates might want to consider the Holiday Inn Express & Suites Atlanta Downtown.

Hyatt Place Atlanta/Buckhead

Hyatt Place Atlanta/Buckhead is a three-pearl business and leisure hotel with 171 rooms. Each room has either two double beds or a king-size bed, plus a sleeper sofa in a sectioned-off living area for privacy. While this makes the hotel a good choice for families or groups of friends, the main clientele are business travelers, and that's reflected in the amenities. There's a 24-hour business center, a 24-hour gym, a meeting room, free Wi-Fi, free remote printing, and a free shuttle to anywhere within a two-mile radius of the hotel. There's also an outdoor pool, but it's on the small side and the parking-lot views are less than appealing. Vacationers wanting pool time may be better off at the nearby Wingate by Wyndham Atlanta/Buckhead, which has a nicer pool and a hot tub.

Artmore Hotel
1302 West Peachtree Street Northwest Midtown Atlanta Atlanta

This 102-room boutique in Midtown Atlanta blends some of its original 1920's Spanish architecture with modern, stylish interior decor. The Artmore's garden courtyard, with brown wicker lounge chairs and a stone fountain, is a highlight, and offers shelter from the city's hubbub. Rooms are upscale, with bright decor in shades of red, white, and cream, and come with up-to-date technology: flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, and free Wi-Fi. But the hotel lacks an on-site restaurant and pool, and you'll have to drive to see the sites in Downtown Atlanta.

The Whitley, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Atlanta Buckhead

The outstanding service and glamorous design at  The Whitley, A Luxury Collection Hotel, Atlanta Buckhead fall in line with customer's expectations of this luxury brand. The 517 rooms are mostly luxurious, with bright bay windows, iPod docks, plush linens, and warm colors, but feel slightly dated, with popcorn ceilings and run-of-the-mill wood furniture. Bathrooms have marble vanities and, in most, rainforest showerheads, but no separate soaking tubs and no name-brand toiletries. Property highlights include a big indoor pool, a high-end cafe, an ornate lobby, and a regal dining room. In Buckhead, it's bested by the Mandarin Oriental and the St. Regis.

Holiday Inn & Suites Atlanta Airport - North
1380 Virginia Ave

The mid-range Holiday Inn & Suites Atlanta Airport North offers a stylish, modern aesthetic that's uncommon among chain or airport hotels. A highlight of this 330-room property is the extensive amount of meeting and lounging space outfitted with chic 1960s-inspired decor. An area called The HUB includes the iMac-equipped business center, and 24-hour restaurant and bar. There's a small fitness center and an attractive outdoor pool. Guest rooms are clean and modern, with a blue and brown color scheme and flat-screen TVs. The property is about three miles from the airport and within walking distance of a number of casual restaurants.

Hotel Indigo Atlanta Midtown
683 Peachtree St NE

The Hotel Indigo Atlanta is a historic property situated in Midtown across the street from the Fox Theatre and in walking distance to restaurants, bars, a MARTA station, and Georgia Tech. This is a solid mid-range property with theater-themed decor, a roomy lobby, and a nice lobby restaurant and bar, the latter opened until late. The hotel also has three meeting rooms, a small business center, and a compact gym. Its 140 guest rooms are small but homey and modern with wood floors and coffeemakers, but guests complain about the tiny bathrooms. Pets of all kinds are allowed at the hotel for an extra per-stay fee, and room and concierge service are available, too. For a little more money, The Georgian Terrace Hotel next door offers a good alternative with its own historic scene, plus a rooftop pool.

Hyatt Regency Atlanta

The towering Hyatt Regency Atlanta is an upper-middle-range hotel with more than 1,200 guest rooms and a rotating restaurant with incredible downtown views. The hotel is conveniently connected to public transport and for access to the airport in about 25 minutes. Rooms are modern and functional with a corporate style, and there are a total of three restaurants, along with an impressive gym and a seasonal outdoor pool on-site. With a FedEx Office business center, and 180,000 square feet of meeting space, the property caters to business travelers, but its downtown location makes it convenient for tourists, as well. For less corporate surrounds, along with a spa, guests could consider the similarly priced W Atlanta - Downtown.
