Art Hotel
Marni 27

Attractive rates and stylish flair draw travelers to the mid-range Art Hotel, set just north of downtown Athens. Vintage chandeliers, colorful decor, and tons of artwork are found throughout common areas and many of the 30 rooms. Guest rooms are well-equipped with flat-screen TVs and en-suite bathrooms, but, like much of Athens, soundproofing isn't great. The property packs in some good features for a hotel of this category, with free breakfasts, a small restaurant, and a tiny outdoor plunge pool. Offering private rooms and fun decor, the high-end hostel City Circus Athens is a more central alternative for budget-conscious travelers.

Hermes Hotel
19 Apollonos Street, Plaka, Syntagma, Monastiraki

This mid-range, 45-room hotel is a clear favorite for families, couples and older travelers desiring a quiet, safe and convenient location. Rooms are modern and clean. Common areas include a library, a small rooftop deck, and a cute children's' playroom with a Little Tykes house, toys, books and markers. The location in the heart of Plaka is excellent, and within a 15-minute walk to the Acropolis. Younger travelers looking for a slightly trendier vibe may want to consider the similarly priced Athens Center Square.

Amalia Hotel
10 Leoforos Vassilissis Amalias

Amalia Hotel is a three-and-a-half pearl hotel with a central location in Syntagma Square. The National Gardens and several public transport stops are right outside the hotel, plus there are several other tourist sites, restaurants, bars, and shops within walking distance. The 97 guest rooms are modern with streamlined furnishings, flat-screen TVs, minibars, and free Wi-Fi -- some rooms have balconies. Features are limited to a free American-style buffet breakfast, restaurant, and lobby bar. There are also five meeting rooms available along with a rooftop garden with lovely views overlooking the city. Downsides are that there is no swimming pool, fitness center, or spa facilities. Travelers may also consider Melia Athens with a rooftop restaurant, swimming pool, and whirlpool; though there are additional fees for breakfast and use of in-room Wi-Fi.

Apollo Hotel
10 Achilleos Street, Metaxourghio Square

In an unattractive neighborhood surrounded by old apartment buildings, the Apollo is dated but offers affordable rates for a fairly central location. With a free (but scant) breakfast buffet, a rooftop bar with great views, the National Theater less than a 10-minute walk away, and the Acropolis, Parthenon, and Ancient Agora within a 10-minute metro ride, the hotel finds that most guests are willing to overlook old curtains and the smell of bug spray for the low rates.

President Hotel
43 Kifissias Leoforos

The 22-story President Hotel is considered a skyscraper in Athens. The 516-room, three-pearl property caters mainly to groups of tourists -- the lobby has been compared to Grand Central Station in the mornings. Despite basic, dated rooms and a nondescript location away from tourist attractions, the hotel does have great features including a seasonal and unheated rooftop pool and chic Penthouse 21 Bar and Restaurant with great city views. Rooms on higher floors offer sweeping views of Athens, but there is a pesky fee for Wi-Fi.
