Hotel Mosaic City Centre

This two-and-a-half-pearl, 25-room value hotel has a quiet location in Amsterdam's Old West. It's not right in the city center, but guests can reach that in 20 minutes by tram, and the Van Gogh Museum is less than a 15-minute walk away. The hotel is fine for those on a budget, but it lacks facilities. There's no breakfast service or dining available, and everything from business features to a fitness room are absent. Rooms are small and modern, equipped with simple furnishings and well-finished bathrooms. All include flat-screen TVs, electric kettles, and free Wi-Fi. Some add balconies with picturesque canal views. Budget travelers might also consider the more central Ibis Amsterdam Centre, which adds a breakfast buffet and stylish restaurant. It's also within the Canal Zone.

W Amsterdam

The four-and-a-half-pearl W Amsterdam is a fantastic luxury property with 238 rooms spread over two beautiful, historic buildings right in the center of Amsterdam. The hotel’s impressive features include a rooftop pool, stylish lounge, well-liked steakhouse, and a beautiful spa, among many others. Rooms are hip and funky, with quirky touches and special details incorporating Dutch culture -- we like that they're a little more restrained than some other W properties. Bathroom configurations can be a bit weird, and other drawbacks include noise from the bar into the wee hours and a pricey breakfast. While the location is great for those who want to be amid the action day and night, it may be worth comparing rates with the Conservatorium Hotel, located in the more peaceful Museum Quarter.

BaRRio Amsterdam

Located just an eight-minute walk away from the central train station and within the historic Canal Ring, this intimate, mid-range bed-and-breakfast makes a convenient home base. It's a 13-minute walk to the Anne Frank House, and all the quaint coffee shops and boutiques of the Jordaan neighborhood are a few blocks away. But despite being inside a traditional Amsterdam home, the decor here is decidedly Asian, with fans, wooden chimes and Buddha statues scattered throughout. Rooms are spacious for the price and include traditional canal house details like wood-beamed ceilings or a courtyard patio. Just note that there is no elevator, and that bathrooms have showers only. The comparable (and sometimes cheaper) Boogaard's Bed and Breakfast in the heart of the Old City is also worth considering.

Best Western Dam Square Inn

Easily distinguishable because of its bright red doors, the Best Western Dam Square Inn is nestled on a quiet alley just outside of Dam Square. The comfortable lobby features a bar, and guests can enjoy free breakfast in the breakfast room. The rooms are casual -- which is expected of a hotel of this stature -- but they're well-equipped with standard amenities such as flat-screen TVs and coffeemakers. Although the decor is a bit dull, the rooms are comfortable and clean; beds are all extra-long. Most bathrooms feature a glass shower, but some rooms have a separate soaking tub as well. For parties traveling with more people, triple rooms have a Murphy bed. It's an affordable option for budget travelers, and rightly so -- guests mainly pay for the attractive locale.

CityHub Amsterdam

The two-and-a-half-pearl CityHub is a high-tech concept hostel with 50 private beds (called Hubs) stacked atop each other in a shared, futuristic space. Hubs are essentially closet-sized pods with double beds, a tiny patch of standing room, and not much else, and all units have shared bathrooms. App-controlled, customizable mood lighting and streaming music is a favorite perk among guests, but technophobes need not apply. Along with the necessary apps, there's free Wi-Fi in the building and throughout the city, arranged through a local carrier. There's also a swank self-serve bar, but breakfast costs extra. Travelers looking for a more traditional hostel experience and free breakfast, check out the private rooms at the Flying Pig Uptown.

Hotel Aalders
Jan Luijkenstraat 13-15

The three-pearl Hotel Aalders, located in Amsterdam's Museum Quarter, is within a five-minute walk from Vondelpark and a 16-minute drive from Amsterdam Centraal, Amsterdam's largest railway station. The 28 rooms are split between two 20th century properties with authentic historic decor including intricate ceilings and an ornate wooden staircase, though some rooms are small. A free buffet breakfast is available daily for guests and there's an intimate on-site bar. Elevator access is available, an uncommon feature in properties of this era. There is no on-site parking, no air-conditioning, and no minibar facilities in guest rooms. As an alternative, Ibis Amsterdam Centre, another three-pearl option, is adjacent to Amsterdam Centraal.

Ibis Amsterdam City West
Transformatorweg 36

Located northwest of the city center in an industrial area, the 180-room mid-range Ibis Amsterdam City West is close to excellent transportation links. Bus 22 stops right outside the hotel, metro station Isolatorweg is within a five-minute walk, and Sloterdijk train station is a 10- to 15-minute walk from the hotel. The hotel has a modern somewhat playful vibe, but rooms, although thoughtfully decorated, are small and bathrooms are downright tiny. While rooms include air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, safes, and free Wi-Fi, they lack coffeemakers and mini-fridges, and windows can't be opened. The breakfast buffet is standard and pricey, and aside from Burger King next door, there are few other food options nearby. Travelers seeking a comparable property with a more central location could consider the Ibis Amsterdam Center or the Acostar Hotel Amsterdam.

NL Hotel District Leidseplein

The mid-range NL Hotel District Leidseplein is a small hotel in an authentic Dutch canal house that offers a good overall value for tourists. While not in the heart of the city, it’s adjacent to a canal and convenient to most attractions, including lively Leidseplein Square (a six-minute walk). Amenities include rental bicycles, free Wi-Fi, concierge assistance, and breakfast that’s not included in room rates. Its 13 rooms feature a bright and decidedly modern decor, including lovely hardwood floors and stylish bathrooms with handsome natural stone tiling. Some rooms feature canal views, mini-fridges, and Nespresso coffeemakers. But, guests staying on upper floors must climb steep staircases. Another good option is the more centrally located mid-range Hotel Sint Nicolaas.

Delta Hotel Amsterdam City Centre
Damrak 42/43

Situated on the bustling Damrak, Delta Hotel Amsterdam City Centre features a stellar location in the heart of Amsterdam, just a five-minute walk from Centraal Station and its trains and trams. Dam Square is a short stroll southwest of the hotel. Like many in the area, the Delta is a simple tourist hotel and nothing more. It offers a free breakfast and free Wi-Fi in public spaces. Rates are affordable, but the hotel needs a serious update and better maintenance, and lacks the quality and facilities of similarly rated nearby hotels like Hotel Luxer or Hotel Prins Hendrik.

Hotel Fita
Jan Luykenstraat 37

An intimate, 15-room hotel in a four-floor building, Hotel Fita offers a superb location one block from the Stedelijk and Van Gogh Museum and two blocks from the Rijksmuseum. Rooms are simple but thoughtfully put together, and come with free Wi-Fi and flat-screen TVs. The Fita offers an ample free breakfast featuring Dutch pancakes, but lacks the facilities of nearby hotels such as the Marriott. A stay here is a good choice for travelers who want a simple affordable stay, with ready access to the museums and the tram a block away.
