NH Collection Amsterdam Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky

The 451-room NH Collection Amsterdam Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky is a luxurious hotel on Dam Square, right in the heart of Amsterdam’s historic center. Dining -- headed by a chef who holds three Michelin stars -- is a standout here, consisting of a fine-dining restaurant, cafe serving fine patisserie, and a striking, galleried atrium known as the Winter Garden. Renovated between 2014-16, rooms have sleek, modern decor, flat-screen TVs, big desks, and kettles, plus some have lovely vistas. Unfortuantely, give its central setting, noise can be an issue, and there are no spa, gym, or pool facilities. Travelers looking for a quieter, five-pearl stay with the additions of a spa and pool should consider Conservatorium Hotel, though its location isn't as central.

Mr. Jordaan Hotel
Bloemgracht 102

Possibly the only hotel in the world to start out as a single sofa, the three-pearl Mr. Jordaan has come a long way since the 1960s. The wheel of fortune has also turned toward the hotel in terms of location, now on the doorstep of the ultra-trendy Nine Streets district and its stylish cafes, restaurants, and fashion boutiques. All 34 guest rooms are dressed in trendy Dutch design, with a dash of old school flower power in the mix. Standard amenities include flat-screen TVs, electric kettles, and free Wi-Fi, but there's no AC, and some rooms are small and lack en-suite bathrooms. For a bit more space, but an equal amount of quirk and versatility, try the Zoku Hotel in Amsterdam East.

Zoku Amsterdam
Weesperstraat 105

Zoku Amsterdam is an attractive, three-and-a-half-pearl property set in the top floors of a large, modern building close to the city center -- with a fantastic rooftop terrace. The hybrid hotel and communal workspace is also one-part hostel, and totally modern both in style and concept. Most of its 133 streamline units have lofted beds, custom furniture, and well-equipped kitchenettes. Cheaper options are standard and tiny bunk bed rooms that are both cramped, but stylish. The facilities are all communal, including a restaurant and bar with an open kitchen. Travelers on more of a budget might want to compare with The Student Hotel Amsterdam City, which has similar amenities, but is outside the inner canal ring.

Urban Lodge Hotel
Arlandaweg 10

The three-pearl Urban Lodge Hotel is a stylish property in Amsterdam's Sloterdijk business district. It's far from downtown and there's little in the immediate surrounds, but an eight-minute walk brings guests to Sloterdijk station for easy city and airport access. Rustic touches pull from the name, but there's nothing pokey here, as the minimalist European design is both chic and cozy. The 120 rooms have country touches contrasting contemporary back-lighting, plus come with bedside USB ports, smart TVs, and rainfall showers. A brasserie-style restaurant comes alongside a bar, and tea and coffee are free 24/7 in the lobby. A basic gym is on-site and Wi-Fi is free throughout. Hotel Aalders is more central, but its rooms aren't air-conditioned.

NH Collection Amsterdam Flower Market

The 218-room NH Carlton Amsterdam is in a prime location for tourists and business travelers alike -- in the city center, around the corner from the famed Bloemenmarkt, or Floating Flower Market. The city's major shopping areas and public squares, as well as public transportation, are within walking distance. The hotel itself, however, feels big and impersonal, and is less than charming. It could also use some updating, but as far as being in the center of things, the location cannot be beat.

Hotel The Globe

The Hotel The Globe offers 20 budget private or shared rooms in Amsterdam's center near scenic canals and the city's notorious Red Light District, making the location great for party-minded travelers. A vibrant sports bar with meals and happy hours is open until the early hours, but that's it in terms of amenities. The spartan dorms and private rooms have modern bathrooms, but there have been reports of bed bugs, bunk beds lack ladders, and electric sockets are limited. Also, there are no in-room Wi-Fi, AC, TVs, kettles, or fridges, and lockers are in hallways. Staff also receive consistently poor reviews. The Flying Pig Downtown offers a far better value with cheerful decor, friendly vibe, and free breakfasts.

Hotel2stay
Tempelhofstraat 2

This three-and-a-half-pearl, 157-room hotel is located in the heart of Amsterdam's business district. Situated right next to Sloterdijk Station, it's a 10-minute train ride to the city center. Geared mostly towards business travelers, the hotel has a contemporary design with minimalist decor and a sophisticated atmosphere. Rooms are more like mini-apartments, equipped with separate living spaces and modern kitchenettes. All are spacious, with bright floor-to-ceiling windows, big double beds, flat-screen TVs, and Senseo coffeemakers, however there is no air-conditioning. The hotel has a small fitness center and sauna, but lacks a restaurant or bar. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property. Travelers preferring to be in the heart of the city center might like the similarly-priced Hotel Piet Hein, which adds a free breakfast.

XO Hotels Park West
Molenwerf 1

XO Hotels Park West is a three-and-a-half pearl, 257-room hotel located to the west of the city center, near Amsterdam Sloterdijk. It has great transport links, with Sloterdijk Station, tram stops, and a bus depot close by, though it’s not within walking distance of the city center. Features at this busy property include a restaurant and lobby lounge. Unfortunately, alcohol isn't sold on-site. Rooms are modern, quiet, and spacious by Amsterdam standards, with amenities like air-conditioning and free Wi-Fi, plus Nespresso machines. Previous guests have found them to be a somewhat dark. Overall, this is a safe bet, but the location is removed from the Canal Zone. Amsterdam has more characterful and central options like the Hotel Notting Hill, though rooms are smaller and it will be a little pricier.
