NH Amsterdam Zuid
Van Leijenberghlaan 221

A business hotel through and through, the NH Amsterdam Zuid (formerly the NH Musica) is in the center of Amsterdam's Financial Mile, close to the World Trade Center. With dedicated meeting facilities, a restaurant, fitness room, and sauna, it's got everything a business traveler might need for an efficient stay in the southern business district, but tourists might prefer to be closer to the city center, which is 20 minutes away on public transportation. The updated rooms are surprisingly stylish, with large work desks and ergonomic chairs, but the free basic Wi-Fi isn't fast enough for everyone. Executive Rooms come with faster high-speed Wi-Fi (and Nespresso machines). It has an upscale finish and tends to have slightly cheaper rates than the nearby Holiday Inn Express, but lacks the free breakfast found there.

Room Mate Aitana
IJDok 6

The Room Mate Aitana is an upscale, 284-room hotel housed in a bold, towering piece of impressive, contemporary architecture. Set on a small artificial island just outside of central Amsterdam, the location isn't ideal for tourists, though Centraal Station is less than a mile away (or about 10 minutes on foot). An emphasis on innovative interior design can be seen throughout, and river and city views can be enjoyed from most of its modern, minimalist rooms. Rates are competitive if you don't mind being away from the city center but, for example, the upscale Albus hotel has similar prices and a location in the heart of Amsterdam.

NH Amsterdam Schiller

Set on charming Rembrandt Square inside an historic Art Deco building once owned by Dutch artist Frits Schiller, the NH Amsterdam Schiller hotel offers convenience and character. The upscale, 92-room property has carefully restored Art Deco interiors, as well as paintings by Schiller on the walls. Rooms are modern with simple wood furnishings, and some overlook the square -- which can be noisy. The Schiller Brasserie serves French-inspired cuisine and has a terrace. Some decor is dated, and there are awkward attempts at modern style in some common areas. For a quieter, more modern, less touristy setting, guests could try Hotel V Nesplein, which attracts locals to its bar and restaurant.

NH Amsterdam Caransa

The NH Amsterdam Caransa is an upper-middle-range hotel with 66 rooms located directly on Rembrandt Square. Location is the main selling point of this modern property, which is within walking distance of all the major sights and has cafes and bars at its doorstep. The breakfast terrace overlooking the bustling, heavily touristed square is lovely in summertime, and guest rooms are sleek and clean with stocked minibars and coffeemakers -- though rooms facing the square can be noisy. Wi-Fi is free. The hotel's sister property, NH Amsterdam Schiller, is located on the opposite side of the square and has an historic brasserie serving lunch and dinner.

NH Amsterdam Noord
Distelkade 21

The 290-room NH Amsterdam Noord is a large, modern, upscale hotel with unpretentious, if a little bland, interiors located north of Amsterdam. While it's far from ideal for exploring the city, a free shuttle service can ferry guests to and from the tourist center. Rooms are nicely finished in fresh contemporary styling and are mostly spacious, but beware a few are pretty small. The restaurant, bar, and coffee shop are all pleasant -- though dining options are limited. Overall, its location means it wouldn't be the first choice when looking for a place to stay in Amsterdam, but for guests not fussed about being right in the city center, or with business on the north side, it’s a good, reasonably priced option.

Hotel La Boheme
Marnixstraat 415

Hotel La Boheme is an 18-room budget property with a homey atmosphere, personable staff (that includes a locally famous cat), and a welcoming bar and cafe that serves a simple, free Dutch breakfast. Rooms are clean and pleasant, though small, and are equipped with flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi -- as well as atmospheric and thoughtful touches like potted plants. Some have shared bathrooms. Despite its Leidseplein location on a busy road with car and tram traffic, the hotel is surprisingly quiet on the upper floors, but expect some noise in street-facing rooms. There are several other similar properties nearby, such as Hotel Freeland, so travelers should compare rates.

Stayokay Amsterdam Oost
Timorplein 21

The Stayokay Amsterdam Oost (Zeeburg), one of 27 outposts of the Dutch hostel chain, is a budget property located in the quiet, residential Zeeburg neighborhood just outside of Amsterdam's city center. The large institutional building used to be a schoolhouse, and now houses 506 rooms as well as a spacious restaurant and bar where a free breakfast buffet is served daily. The cheery and inviting interiors also include a games room and several meeting rooms, plus there are laundry facilities and computers available for guests' use. Dormitory-style rooms are simple and clean, with high ceilings and lots of natural light courtesy of large windows, plus en-suite bathrooms. Though a bit removed from the city center, there are several bus and tram stops within a few blocks of the property that give access to the center in about 20 minutes. For something more centrally located, travelers might want to consider Stayokay Stadsdoelen instead, which is situated in the canal district and within walking distance of many sights.

Hotel The Neighbour's Magnolia
Willemsparkweg 205

Though a bit outside of the city center, the mid-range 21-room Hotel The Neighbour's Magnolia is in a good location for those looking to explore some of Amsterdam's cultural attractions -- like the nearby Museum Quarter -- while avoiding the thickest crowds. This charming, family-run boutique hotel is full of lovely decor and details that imbue the small facilities with lots of character. Rooms are stylish (in a streamlined, hipster way) and packed with Danish designer furniture, and any basic amenities that aren't present can be picked up from communal racks in the hallways or requested from the staff. A continental breakfast is offered (for a fee) in the sunlit, hip lounge that overlooks the namesake magnolia tree, but there are few other facilities here.

WestCord Art Hotel Amsterdam
Spaarndammerdijk 302

The 106-room WestCord Art Hotel Amsterdam is an upper-mid-range hotel that is part of a Dutch chain located slightly on the outskirts of Amsterdam's city center. Eye-popping colors, spacious bathrooms, and a plethora of fun contemporary art all make this property stand out. The entire hotel is decked out with countless oeuvres, and the lobby hosts a rotating atelier with art for sale by local artists. The neighborhood itself is somewhat barren, and consists mainly of industrial and office buildings, though there are a smattering of shops and two bus stations within a few dozen feet of the front door, giving access to the main attractions of the Canal Ring within 15 minutes. The main downsides are the slightly inconvenient location and the lack of street life in the immediate surroundings. Wi-Fi is free throughout.

WestCord City Centre Hotel Amsterdam
Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal 50

A prime location in the heart of Amsterdam accounts for much of the WestCord City Centre Hotel Amsterdam's popularity, but colorfull rooms that include modern additions (like Nespresso machines) add extra appeal to this 106-room, mid-range property. Small, pleasant rooms feature vibrant, funky decor and modern comforts such as flat-screen TVs, though not everyone will appreciate the lack of privacy created by glass bathroom walls. Sparse features include an inviting lounge and breakfast cafe, though breakfast comes with an additional fee. The nearby Inntel Hotels Amsterdam Centre has similar rates with additional features like a fitness center, restaurant, and bar so its worth considering as well.
