Puffin Inn of Anchorage
4400 Spenard Rd

The two-pearl Puffin Inn is an eight-minute drive from the Anchorage Airport and 10 minutes from downtown. Several types of rooms are spread among three separate buildings, but they’re all simple and some have exterior corridors. Rooms in the Annex building are a half-block from the lobby, and those on the top two floors require climbing stairs to access. Mini-fridges, microwaves, and coffeemakers are standard, and some rooms have kitchenettes with wet bars and/or whirlpool tubs. While there isn't a pool, the hotel offers lots of freebies: an airport shuttle, continental breakfast, parking, and Wi-Fi. It also has guest laundry facilities, a business center, and small fitness center. Pets are welcome for a fee. As a slightly higher priced alternative, the Clarion Suites Downtown has all the same freebies plus an indoor pool.

The Voyager Inn
501 K St

The Voyager Inn is a small mid-range property with a walkable location near restaurants and sights in downtown Anchorage. The property is a good option for tourists who want to explore Anchorage on foot, as well as business travelers on a budget. There are 40 spacious, clean rooms with simple decor, kitchenettes, and flat-screen TVs. Free breakfast and afternoon wine and beer are available. The hotel also lacks a fitness center, but guests can use the health club and indoor pool at the partner hotel (Hotel Captain Cook) across the street. Wi-Fi is free throughout. Business travelers who don't mind being 10 minutes from downtown might prefer the (pricier) Crowne Plaza Anchorage-Midtown, which has an executive lounge, a restaurant and bar, and an indoor pool.

The Hotel Captain Cook
939 W 5th Ave

The four-pearl Hotel Captain Cook is a downtown Anchorage landmark that’s served as one of the city’s top corporate and social-event venues since it opened in 1965. This 547-room hotel, split into three towers, is chock full of amenities such as separate men’s and women’s fitness centers and five food options including a fine-dining, rooftop restaurant. It also houses a pool/whirlpool, spa treatment rooms, 12 boutique shops, and offers valet parking -- although it’s expensive. Rooms and suites are pulled-together, spacious, and well equipped, but their generic decor with dated details can dampen their appeal. Still, room service, free Wi-Fi, and Keurig coffeemakers come standard. Rates are competitive, but they don’t include breakfast. It's worth comparison shopping with The Voyager Inn across the street, which can have lower rates, free breakfast, and free access to Captain Cook’s fitness and pool facilities.

Fairfield Inn & Suites Anchorage Midtown
5060 A St

The three-pearl Fairfield Inn & Suites Anchorage Midtown is a clean, affordable chain hotel with colorful, modern interiors and a wide range of amenities. At a 10-minute drive from downtown Anchorage and its attractions, it’s not centrally located, but it’s near highways and restaurants, and within a 10-minute free shuttle ride of the airport. While it lacks a full-service restaurant, a well-regarded free hot breakfast buffet is served, and other features include a small indoor pool, hot tub, and fitness center. The 106 spacious guest rooms all come well-equipped with flat-screen TVs, microwaves, mini-fridges, coffeemakers, and free Wi-Fi, and units with jetted tubs are available. Travelers looking for a similar stay that's closer to central Anchorage can check out Clarion Suites Downtown, but rates are often higher.

Aviator Hotel Anchorage
239 W 4th Ave

Aviator Hotel Anchorage is a two-and-a-half-pearl hotel in downtown Anchorage. Unfortunately, it hasn’t been well-maintained. Sure, the new owners are trying to make updates, but they took over in 2012 and the pool and helipad still aren’t completed. A walkable downtown location, low rates, and a cafe with live music during the week are the saving graces for the property. It’s the 250 rooms that need the most love as guests have reported odors and cleanliness issues. Microwaves and mini-fridges are a welcome touch, and many guests choose the extended-stay option. The nearby Clarion Suites Downtown might be more ideal for some, as it has a pool, gym, and contemporary guest rooms.

Hyatt House Anchorage

Opened in mid-2017, the three-and-a-half-pearl Hyatt House Anchorage still feels fresh and glossy, with a contemporary boutique design to boot. Streamlined, minimalist furnishings set off by a few stripes and geometric patterns carry through the common spaces and into the 144 rooms and suites. Eighty-two units come with full kitchens, a bonus for those who prefer to self cater. A mini-market area in the lobby can supply quick snacks, while the bar serves slightly more substantial bites. Active guests will appreciate having multiple options for a workout including a heated indoor pool and a solid gym, while bike lanes just outside the building run north to downtown, where entertainment options are far greater. Those that aren't biking can reach downtown in a 10-minute drive or a 25-minute bus ride. Travelers who prefer being in the thick of downtown's attractions may prefer the Sheraton Anchorage Hotel.

Motel 6 Anchorage Midtown
5000 A St, Highway 1 East/Seward Highway

While it doesn’t have the most exciting atmosphere or a large set of amenities, the two-pearl Motel 6 Anchorage Midtown is an affordable chain property with a clean and contemporary design renovated in 2017. Travelers won’t find breakfast here, but there’s free coffee in the mornings and vending machines for snacks or drinks throughout the day. Rooms are simple both in style and in amenities, but they are clean and pleasant. They offer flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and air-conditioning. For just a bit more per night, travelers should consider the Clarion Suites Downtown which offers a more ideal, centralized location plus an indoor pool, gym, and free breakfast.

Embassy Suites by Hilton Anchorage
600 E Benson Blvd

The Embassy Suites by Hilton Anchorage is a modern three-and-a-half-pearl business hotel with lots of value-added freebies including made-to-order breakfast, evening receptions, Wi-Fi, and shuttles to the airport and downtown. Located near a shopping mall on a busy road in Midtown, the hotel is a short drive to downtown and 15 minutes to the airport. Features include event space, an indoor pool, fitness center, and guest laundry machines. Territory Kitchen & Bar features seafood specialties for lunch and dinner, plus it has a full bar and room service. Suites are clean and spacious with kitchenettes, but the rooms are rather dark and traffic noise is noticeable in some rooms. Note that smoking is allowed in some rooms. The Crowne Plaza Anchorage-Midtown has lower rates and many of the same amenities, but breakfast costs extra.
