Coco Tulum
Carretera Tulum - Boca Paila km 8

Cocu Tulum is a resort for those who want to get out and about, either to enjoy the beach and outdoors, or to explore the local culture of Tulum. Room furnishings are sparse, and resort amenities are even more so; there's no air-conditioning, television, or pools (though Wi-Fi access is surprisingly good). However, the beachfront property offers many opportunities for swimming, snorkeling, or witnessing the wildlife of the Sian-Ka'an biosphere. Guests can hear the ocean from their rooms, and beachfront cabins open directly onto the shore.

Suenos Tulum
Carret Tulum - Boca Paila, Zona hotelera Km 8.5

Suenos Tulum is a deceptively large mid-range property where roaming around barefoot through the soft-sand garden grounds is the norm. This is an ultra-laid-back spot at the southern end of Tulum's Hotel Zone with 13 clean and breezy beachside bungalows and one chic upper-level penthouse with 360-degree rooftop views. The solar-powered hotel’s eco-friendly practices mean, with the exception of the Temple Suite, no electricity during the day and no air-conditioning or electrical outlets in the bungalows (there’s a charging station in the lobby), although all rooms have free Wi-Fi. There are a small pool, casual restaurant and bar, tons of hammocks, and a beach area with stretched tarps and loungers. Those seeking daytime electricity and air-conditioning in rooms should compare rates with Cabanas Tulum.

The Beach Tulum
Road Tulum-Boca Paila km 7, Zona Hotelera

The 28-room, adult-only Beach Tulum is a popular upper-middle-range option in the heart of the Hotel Zone, and for good reason. Its 28 rooms are right on the beach (you can step out onto the sand from the ground-floor units), its small size allows for lots of personalized attention from the staff, and its two restaurants (shared with sister property Cabanas Tulum) serve generous free breakfasts -- the beachfront restaurant Ziggy's is praised for its great food. Charming rooms combine rustic and modern elements, and all have ample outdoor space and ocean views. Property features are impressive for a boutique, and include a pretty, meandering pool; outdoor whirlpool; and daily yoga classes (Beach Tulum and Cabanas Tulum share yoga and spa facilities). Free Wi-Fi and parking add to the value, although year-round mosquitos can be an issue. This is one of the best options at this price point; the nearby Ahau is a comparable option, but lacks a pool and allows children.

Posada Lamar
Carretera Tulum-Boca Palia Km 6

Posada Lamar is a rustic clustering of eight cabins about midway down Tulum's beach road. While charming, this mid-range property is not for everyone -- those who are skittish about bugs may find these unsealed rooms unsettling (the truly bug squeamish should check out a room in town), and travelers requiring modern comforts, pristine rooms, and spotless bathroom fixtures might want to look elsewhere. Accommodations are open air and exposed to the elements, and their wear and tear reflects this. But the laid-back, quiet beach vibe, colorful folk art decor, and the rugged beauty will appeal to outdoor enthusiasts and those seeking an unplugged getaway. Electricity comes from solar panels and wind generators, and lights are kept low so as not to interrupt the breeding cycle of the blue crab, sea birds, iguanas, and sea turtles that lay their eggs in the sand.

Diamante K
Carretera Boca Paila Km 2.5., Tulum Ruins

The Diamante K is a boutique hotel right on Tulum's stunning white-sand shore, offering tons of rustic-chic charm in a value-hotel package. The views of the turquoise sea are breathtaking from the private-feeling lagoon-like beach, and there's excellent Mexican food at the hotel's boho open-air restaurant. Each of the 29 cabins is quaint and mostly stylish, with natural wood details, polished concrete or stone floors with pebble inlays, and breezy fabrics creating light and bright spaces. However, frills are few: There's no air-conditioning or in-room Wi-Fi, and some cabins share bathrooms. For those looking to escape it all and unplug, the Diamante K is hard to beat. Travelers in need of more perks should consider Posada Yum Kin, though it's not on the beach and rates are higher.

El Pez Colibri Boutique Hotel
Carretera Tulum a Boca Paila Km 5.5

The mid-range El Pez Colibri Boutique Hotel is ideal for couples and small groups or families looking for a rustic and chill spot along the rocky Tulum coastline. All 19 rooms have cool tile or concrete floors, personal patio space, and come with free breakfast, 24-hour electricity and air-conditioning, organic toiletries, and great ocean views. Thanks to the hotel’s location -- in a semi-restricted area -- guests get a mix of coastline spots from a soft sand beach to elevated grassy banks to a rugged and rocky beachfront. Alas, the water here is choppy and not made for swimming. There’s also an excellent on-site restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating, a fantastic bar with tasty cocktails and healthy smoothies, and a small pool. Travelers may want to compare amenities and rates with the upper-middle-range Cabanas Tulum.

Mi Amor Colibri Boutique Hotel
Carretera Tulum-Bocapaila Km. 4.1, Zona Costera

Mi Amor is an intimate, upscale boutique resort on the beach that attracts a primary clientele of vacationing couples. The 17 rooms here have a chic, rustic vibe, and most come with either balconies or private plunge pools. There's also a beach-facing infinity pool as well as a spa and a well-received restaurant serving international cuisine, with a heavy emphasis on French- and Italian-inspired dishes. The hotel is also right on the beach, and while the rocky coastline is beautiful, it's less than ideal for those wanting to swim. Overall, Mi Amor is an excellent option for couples looking for something quiet and romantic, but the intimate vibe is less suited to families. Those with kids in tow may prefer the family-friendly Ana y Jose Charming Hotel & Spa instead.

Villas Geminis Boutique Condo Hotel
calle Geminis y Andromeda Oriente

The 12-unit Villas Geminis Boutique Condo Hotel is a three-pearl option in downtown Tulum. It's within walking distance of restaurants, shops, and bars, and the beach is a five-minute drive away. Guests without cars can use the hotel's bicycles for free to get to the beach and other attractions. Rooms are attractive, homey, and decorated in tribute to various famous artists. They feature air-conditioning and flat-screen TVs, and some have full kitchens. All have a balcony or terrace with a hammock or lounge chair. The pool and gardens are lovely, and breakfast is free. Travelers seeking lower rates who don't mind being a bit isolated could check out Green Tulum Cabanas & Gardens, where rooms don't have TVs, but there's a nice pool area.

Piedra Escondida
Carretera Tulum Ruinas-Boca Paila Km 3.5

Piedra Escondida is a small, tidy resort hidden away on a property that feels secluded, despite being right on a main road and surrounded by numerous restaurants, hotels, and shops. With only nine guest rooms, this destination offers a lovely, beachside experience in a largely unplugged setting. There are no TVs or phones in the spacious, but simple, rooms, and Internet access is limited to the restaurant area (where free breakfast is served). Families are welcome at this pet-friendly resort, and it supplies shovels and sand toys for building sandcastles. There are very few other amenities, however. The hotel is a solid mid-range pick, though, for families and couples seeking a quiet, laid-back stay.

Alma Tulum Hotel Boutique
KM 8, 470 Carretera Tulum, Boca Paila

The eco-chic look is common along Tulum’s beachfront hotel zone and the upscale Alma Tulum Boutique Hotel follows suit. Opened in December 2016, Alma features gorgeous weathered and reclaimed furniture and decor, exposed thatched roofs, visible wood beams, and whitewashed concrete walls. We liked the calm vibe and salty air, though the high prices on the minibar and chargeable Nespresso machines were an unpleasant surprise. Expect AC, firm beds, large terraces with stunning beach views, and free breakfast in the restaurant. Unfortunately, the recycled water can cause the bathroom to smell. Pluses include 24-hour solar powered electricity, free Wi-Fi and parking, a chill beach club, and a small pool. For a more wellness-orientated mid-range spot and slightly less rustic rooms, check out features at the Nomade Tulum
