Storchen Zurich is a 66-room, upscale hotel set in the center of Old Town. Its roots trace back more than 650 years, and it's the only hotel in Zurich that's right on the Limmat River. That means plenty of lovely waterway views from restaurant terraces and many of the rooms. Rooms have old-fashioned styling that include blue-and-white toile fabric, wooden furniture, and blue carpeting. Much of the hotel might feel a little dated, or charmingly traditional, depending on one's taste. For historic heritage with more chic interiors, travelers should check out the nearby Widder Hotel, but rates are higher.

Upscale riverfront hotel with 14th-century roots and old-school ambience
Two facts make the Storchen Zurich one of a kind. First, it's the only hotel set right on Zurich's Limmat River, and at its narrowest point. Second, it lays claim to being the oldest hotel in Zurich, tracing its origins back to the mid-14th century. After a rich and storied history, the hotel was rebuilt in 1939 and nothing of the original structure remains. Instead, a rather unremarkable building stands in its place. Stepping inside, guests will find a small and tidy lobby, with a domed centerpiece chandelier illuminating yellow-and-black marble floors and ritzy brass accents. Crimson carpeted hallways are lined with antique paintings and wooden paneling, while stained-glass windows depict the shields of various guilds that used to meet at the property. A lounge has the feel of an old-fashioned living room, complete with classical-style furnishings and a cozy fireplace. This traditional effect can feel a bit dated in parts. Clientele is an even split of business guests during the week and well-heeled vacationing couples on the weekend.

The hotel is located on the cobblestone Weinplatz Square in the heart of Zurich's Old Town, overlooking the Limmat River. There's plenty in the way of restaurants and cafes in the immediate area, and numerous tourist attractions are within walking distance. The famous Paradeplatz and Bahnhofstrasse -- one of the world's most expensive and exclusive shopping streets -- are both just a couple minutes' away on foot, while the Fraumunster Church with the Chagall Windows is a minute away. The main train station, Hauptbahnhof, is about a 10-minute walk from the hotel, and from here travelers can catch transportation to Zurich Airport in about the same amount of time. Otherwise, the airport is about a 20-minute drive away.

There are 66 rooms and suites, all of which are bright and traditional with blue-and-white toile fabric, wooden furnishings, and carpeted floors. Rooms vary in size, from Classic Queen Singles to Suites, but are generally spacious, and many have lovely views over the river. Amenities include free and fast Wi-Fi, bathrobes and slippers, and 48-inch smart TVs with satellite channels. Minibars are well-stocked, plus fresh fruit and mineral water are replenished daily (suites add espresso machines). Bathrooms are well-maintained with shower/tub combos or walk-in showers and separate tubs in the suites. Upscale toiletries and wall-mounted hairdryers are also provided.

A buffet breakfast (included in the rate) has continental breakfast items, as well as fresh-squeezed orange juice, Bircher muesli, and cooked-to-order eggs -- and it can be served on the terrace overlooking the river. The atmospheric Rotisserie also offers five-course dinners next to an open fire, while Barchetta serves light meals right on the riverbank. There's also a snug bar with stained-glass mullioned windows and regular live piano music. Although a pedestrian area, guests can drive to the doorstep of the hotel for valet service. A private jetty also gives access to riverboat rides passing the hotel. The hotel has no health or spa facilities, but there are meeting and event spaces available. Wi-Fi is free throughout.
