The Sorell Hotel Rutli
is a mid-range chain hotel housed in a charming 19th-century building in
Zurich's picturesque Old Town. Stylish, modern rooms have high-end amenities such as Nespresso machines and sleek bathrooms of glass and tile -- though those facing the street can get some
noise. A decent breakfast of meats, cheeses, and pastries is included in the rate -- as is Wi-Fi -- though there's no
restaurant or fitness center. Prices are fair for what you get given the location.
Scene
Chain hotel in a charming 19th-century building with modern interiors
Built in 1890 and renovated in 2010, the Sorell Hotel Rutli features a pleasant shuttered facade that exudes Old Town charm. The interiors are contrastingly modern, with a red leather sofa and white retro-style chairs illuminated by ceiling spotlights. The original stone wall contrasts nicely with an
ultra-modern floating fireplace, while a single elevator services the hotel's
five floors. The hotel is part of a Swiss chain of 17 properties and attracts
mostly tourists, though it does get its fair share of business travelers.
Location
Set in Zurich's picturesque Old Town, a block from River Limmat
The hotel is
centrally located in Zurich's picturesque Old Town (Altstadt), a few blocks from
River Limmat and the Bahnhofbrucke bridge. The surrounding area is full of
quaint historic buildings and cobbled streets, and there are plenty of bars and
restaurants within walking distance. The famous Bahnhofstrasse -- one of
the world's most expensive and exclusive shopping streets -- is a 10-minute walk away. The
city's main Hauptbahnhof train station is on the other side of the river, about a five-minute walk away. From here, travelers can get to the airport in just 10
minutes.
Rooms
Fresh, contemporary rooms with some street noise
All 58 rooms at the Sorell were
renovated in 2010 and are sleek, modern, and streamlined with polished floors and white walls. The hotel's 12 Premium Rooms were refurbished in 2014 and have even more contemporary decor. Modern amenities include interactive flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and Nespresso coffeemakers. Clean glass and title bathrooms have wall-mounted
toiletry dispensers and hairdryers; most have rainfall showers and a couple also have tubs with whirlpool jets.
Road-facing rooms are prone to some street noise and -- although eco-friendly -- the in-room cooling system can be inadequate during hotter weather.
Features
Decent buffet breakfast included in rate plus small bar, but no restaurant
A buffet breakfast is
included room rates and includes cereals, yogurt, cheese, cold cuts, boiled eggs,
and croissants. There's also a small
bar that serves drinks into the evening, but no restaurant. In fact, the hotel offers little else
in the way of on-site facilities beyond free Wi-Fi.
