Bottom Line

Hotel
Glaernischhof is a privately owned, eco-friendly hotel located in central Zurich's business district. Bright rooms have modern corporate style and Airlux mattresses with adjustable firmness. The hotel's "all-inclusive" rate includes Wi-Fi, breakfast, welcome drinks, minibar treats, and on-demand TV, though lunch, dinner, and parking cost extra and are typically
expensive. Free access to a decent health club is also a bonus. Overall, this is a good value for an upscale hotel -- even if single units can be a little on the small side. The Ambassador à l’Opéra is another excellent upscale option in Zurich, but it's often more expensive and lacks the Glaernischhof's freebies.

Scene

Privately owned, eco-friendly hotel popular with business travelers

Built in 1951,
the Hotel Glaernischhof occupies a characterless six-story building on a
corner overlooking a quiet junction. Sculpted shrubbery and
sheep-skin seats on the sidewalk out front help add a little bit of personality to the otherwise plain frontage. Interiors are sleek but conservative, with marble-effect pillars and a sweeping reception desk
illuminated by numerous ceiling spotlights. The majority of clients are business
guests, though the hotel does get some tourists. The hotel's eco-friendly practices include innovative seawater
heating systems and the use of sustainable materials.

Location

Two blocks from Zurich’s Bahnhofstrasse and the lakeside promenade

The hotel is surrounded by
Zurich's financial and business district, close to the city center. The famous Bahnhofstrasse -- one of
the world's most expensive and exclusive shopping streets -- is just a couple
blocks away, as is the north side of Lake Zurich, with its pleasant quayside
promenade. Zurich's quaint Old Town is around a 10-minute walk away, while most of
the city's main tourist attractions are accessible on foot. The Stockerstrasse
tram stop is a few blocks away and connects to Zurich's main train
station in about 10 minutes.

Rooms

Adjustable air mattresses and free minibars, on-demand TV, and Wi-Fi

The property has
62 rooms, all of which are simply decorated in a modern but staid corporate style; color palettes vary (some rooms are red and blue, others blue and gold). Most
also feature original artwork by Zurich artist Stefan Hanni. All come equipped with particularly comfy adjustable Airlux mattresses and have free Wi-Fi, on-demand TVs, and minibar snacks and drinks. Other amenities include Tassimo coffee machines and air-conditioning, while Loverooms have satin bedsheets, robes, and sound-tower
speakers with digital music players. While rooms are generally spacious enough, some Single Rooms are on the small side.

Features

Excellent on-site dining (including free breakfast), plus free access to health center next door

A buffet breakfast is included in the rate and uses
fresh eggs from the hotel's own chicken farm as well as a mix of local produce and fair-trade items. The Glaernischhof Restaurant also serves  regional specialties at lunch and dinner, while
Le Poisson is considered one of the city's finest fish restaurants (and guests
receive a discount). Guests also have free access to the gym next
door -- Luxor -- which has a sauna, steam room, and a whirlpool tub along with excellent cardio and weight-training facilities.
