Bottom Line

The Hotel Continental Zurich - MGallery Collection is a mid-range hotel with Alpine chalet-themed interiors located a short walk from the main train station. The attractive Old Town is also just a 10-minute walk away, while regular trams whisk visitors to the city center in minutes. Some of the hotel's 138 rooms are small and show signs of wear, although they are cozy with decent amenities (some even have Nespresso machines). An excellent breakfast buffet particularly stands out, but it's expensive and not included in most rates. That said, room rates however are relatively reasonable for Zurich. Travelers may want to compare rates with the modern, mid-range Sorell Hotel Rutli, which includes breakfast.

Scene

Modernist architecture disguising a cozy and old-fashioned Swiss Alps atmosphere

Built in 1968 in the modernist architectural style of the era, there's little
immediately charming or attractive in the sterile and dated facade of
the Hotel Continental. Stepping inside, however, there's a dramatic shift in tone: warm, chalet-style interiors complete with pine paneling, mountain scenes, and
even a carved wooden fireplace with a pair of snug wing-back armchairs.
Pleasant touches such as free natural apple juice on tap and numerous
Alpine details create a cozy and welcoming -- if a little cheesy -- Old
Swiss atmosphere that continues through both of the hotel's wings. Even the
hotel's inner courtyard features a colorful full-sized cow sculpture.

Location

Overlooking a main road, a five-minute walk from Zurich's main train station

The hotel is
located on a main road in a predominantly residential area of Zurich. It's a five-minute
walk from the city's main train station and transport hub, with trains connecting to Zurich Airport in 20 minutes. The impressive Swiss National Museum
is nearby, and the charming streets of Zurich's Old Town are around a 10-minute walk. While most of the city's main tourist attractions are
accessible on foot, nearby tram lines to Zurich's
city center run frequently.

Rooms

Rooms have chalet-inspired decor with good soundproofing and quality toiletries

The hotel's 138
rooms follow the same chalet-inspired styling found elsewhere in the property, with Old Swiss-style decor and a
mixture of cozy and rustic furnishings. A few signs of wear can be spotted adding to a lived-in look. Decent amenities include minibars, kettles, and flat-screen
TVs with some satellite channels. Superior Rooms also come with Nespresso
machines and iPod docks. Although rooms are soundproofed, some on the street side do get a little noise and those facing the inner courtyard are the quietest option. And while rooms have air-conditioning, some can get too warm over the summer months. The bathrooms have shower/tub combos and look dated, though they do come with quality C.O. Bigelow
toiletries.

Features

Outstanding -- but expensive -- breakfast buffet and free Wi-Fi, but no fitness facilities

The hotel offers an extensive hot and cold breakfast buffet that includes fresh honeycomb, farm-fresh yogurt, and baked apple
pastries, as well as eggs, bacon, and sausages. However, the spread is not included in most rates and can be expensive. L'entupada -- the on-site bar and
restaurant -- is also open for lunch and dinner and offers a menu of mainly Swiss specialties
made from regional produce. The hotel also has private garage parking (for a
fee) and free property-wide Wi-Fi. However, there's no fitness center or pool.
