A popular spot for British families, the 134-unit Alykanas Beach Apart-Hotel sits right on the beach on the Greek island of Zakynthos. Rooms here are simple and come with kitchenettes, but tend to be worn, with bathrooms in need of repair. The common facilities are fortunately more impressive and include pools, a playground, and a game room. There's also a beachside restaurant and bar (though it's not part of the hotel), and a mini-market on-site for guests who want to take advantage of self-catering facilities.
Scene
Simple beach apartment-hotel popular with British families
The Alykanas Beach Apart-Hotel attracts a large number of British travelers, including many families, and is more appropriate for a fun-in-the-sun holiday than a romantic getaway. There's an inviting lobby with polished tile floors that gets lots of natural light and has plenty of cream sofas with golden accent pillows and wall art to match. Guests congregate mostly outside, especially at the large pool area that looks out over the beach, or at the adjacent restaurant and bar, which is not owned by the hotel.
Location
Right on the beach in an area surrounded by other vacation rentals
The Alykanas Beach Apart-Hotel is located right on the beach on the Ionian island of Zakynthos. The resort is in an area surrounded by other hotels, vacation rentals, and resorts, some of which have on-site supermarkets and restaurants open to all. It's a 15- to 20-minute walk to the town, which has a couple of restaurants and an ATM. Public transportation on the island, while cheap, is less than reliable; guests who opt for a car can take advantage of free parking at the hotel. The Zakynthos International Airport is a half-hour drive away.
Rooms
Simple, shabby rooms with kitchenettes and private balconies
The 134 rooms at the Alykanas Beach Apart-Hotel range from studios to two-bedroom apartments. All come with kitchenettes and there's a mini-mart on-site selling a good range of grocery products, including some imported items. Decor is simple and worn, with generic wooden furniture, plain blue bedspreads, and little in the way of decoration. Most of the rooms face the sea and all come with balconies. Air-conditioning is available for an extra fee. Bathrooms are basic and have tubs with handheld, rather than wall-mounted, showerheads. Some guests have complained of smells and leaks. While there is Wi-Fi in public areas, only some rooms facing the bar area on the ground floor can get a signal. Unfortunately these are also the loudest rooms, and are not a good choice for those who go to bed early.
Features
Pools, kids' activities, and direct beach access
Life at the resort centers around the large outdoor pool that has a tiny children's pool on one side and a square-shaped whirlpool hot tub on the other. Plentiful children's amenities include a playground with a play structure, seesaws, and swings, with a set of adjacent lounge chairs for parents who want to sunbathe while keeping an eye on their kids. There's also a game room with pool tables, air hockey, and a claw-grab machine filled with stuffed animals as well as a gift shop selling beach toys. The property is situated directly on a beach with calm water and a limited amount of sand space; the beach also has its own restaurant (which is not actually part of the hotel). Wi-Fi is available in common areas and is free.
