Bottom Line

The centrally located, upper-middle-range Best Western Premier Hotel Astoria is within a five-minute walk of the main train station, and other transportation links. The 100 guest rooms are clean and spacious, and include free Wi-Fi free, flat-screen TVs, and minibars, and a hearty buffet breakfast is included in the room rate. The hotel, which dates from 1932, evokes old-world style, which some might find more dated than charming. Travelers seeking chicer and sleeker accommodations might want to check out the swanky Hotel 9 boutique property or the modern Arcotel Allegra, which has competitive rates and an on-site spa and wellness center.

Scene

Central location, spacious rooms, and somewhat dated decor

Dating from 1932, the Best Western Premier Hotel Astoria’s drab facade hides a welcoming interior, where old-world style comes through in deep-red carpets, wood paneling, leather sofas, and piano in the lobby area. Charming as some might find it in some areas, the decor is dated overall, especially the pastel color scheme in the dining room and the drab pink leather chairs and sofas in the Glama bar. Rooms have a pleasing, neutral decor, but they too evoke an earlier time. Given its proximity to transportation, the Best Western Premier Hotel Astoria is especially popular with couples either starting or ending an extended vacation in Croatia, while business travelers find it convenient for its business facilities, central location, and proximity to the train station and main bus station.

Location

Convenient location in central Zagreb close to transportation links

The Best Western Premier Hotel Astoria is located on a quiet residential street in central Zagreb within a five-minute walk of the main train station and several other transportation links -- the streetcar stop is about a four-minute walk from the hotel, and the ride to the main bus station, where an airport shuttle runs every half hour, takes 13 minutes. Many galleries and museums are within easy walking distance of the Best Western Premier: the Art Pavilion is about a two-minute walk away; the Croatian Academy of Science and the Arts is a four-minute walk; and the Modern Gallery and the Archeological Museum are five to seven minutes away on foot. Zagreb’s main square, Ban Jelacic, is a 10-minute walk away. Zagreb Airport is a 30-minute drive, depending on traffic.

Rooms

Spacious rooms include two suites.

The spacious rooms are decorated in a neutral style, with off-white walls, navy-blue carpets, wooden furniture, and many lamps. All rooms have wooden wardrobes, flat-screen TVs, minibars, and tea- and coffee-making facilities. Executive Rooms are larger and have sitting areas, and suites have two bathrooms. Rooms facing the street tend to be brighter but noisier. Rooms don't come with a view here: Less-expensive rooms at the back are cramped and look out onto an air shaft, while others look out on unattractive courtyard parking or the street. Bathrooms have either shower/tub combos, or shower cubicles, which can be a bit claustrophobic. All come with toiletries and hairdryers.

Features

Extensive free breakfast buffet, on-site restaurant, coffee and cocktail bar, business center, and meeting rooms

The free breakfast buffet of more than 100 items is served  in the on-site Ragusa restaurant, which is also open for lunch and dinner, serving local and international fare. Glama bar stays open all day, serving coffee, pastries, and cocktails, and there's also a pleasant courtyard garden with seating. Free coffee and, in the summer, cold lemon water are available in the reception area. The hotel has two meeting rooms, which can seat up to 14 people, and a 24-hour business center with PCs, printer, photocopier, and fax machine. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the property.
