Bottom Line

This four-pearl, 25-room boutique hotel is a five-minute walk from the center of Harrogate. It's a small, traditional hotel with modern touches, overlooking the picturesque parklands of Harrogate Stray. The atmosphere is cozy, and all guest rooms are immaculately clean, combining classic and contemporary touches. Modern in-room amenities include flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, and Nespresso coffeemakers, while private bathrooms have underfloor heating and deep soaking tubs. The hotel has a stylish restaurant and bar with an outdoor courtyard for alfresco dining, but there are no fitness or spa facilities. A generous breakfast buffet with hot and cold options is served daily, though it costs extra. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel. Travelers preferring more facilities might like The Majestic Hotel, which adds a fitness center and spa, but isn't as fresh.

Scene

Traditional hotel with modern touches, originally a Victorian coachhouse

This small, boutique hotel manages to blend fresh, contemporary decor with a quintessentially English feel. Once a Victorian coachhouse, the property retains much of its old character and original features, including vintage radiators and exposed wooden beams. Framed portraits of Yorkshire are hung throughout the property, and plush Chesterfield sofas and cozy fireplaces add a homey atmosphere. The lobby is located at the back of the hotel through the restaurant, which can be a tad confusing at first, but staff will cheerfully point you in the right direction. The restaurant -- with its contemporary furnishings and polished hardwood floors -- acts as the main communal area, with many guests and locals dining in intimate turquoise booths. It has a relaxed vibe during the day, though livens up in the evenings, with groups frequently gathering for drinks at the zinc-topped bar. The hotel attracts a high number of business travelers during the week, while tourists tend to visit more on the weekends.

Location

A five-minute walk from the center of town

The West Park Hotel is located in Harrogate, a historic Yorkshire spa town filled with designer shops and upmarket restaurants. It's a short walk from the center of town, and the famous Betty's Tea Rooms is just down the road. The hotel is situated on West Park, a smart promenade that overlooks Harrogate Stray, a large park with over 200 acres of picturesque greenery. It's conveniently located for anyone exploring the area by foot, and most attractions are within walking distance, including Valley Gardens, Harrogate Theater, and Harrogate Turkish Baths & Health Spa. There are plenty of amenities in the immediate area, including a supermarket and traditional English pub. Knaresborough Castle can be reached in 15 to 20 minutes by taxi or 30 minutes by train. Kirkstall Abbey is a 30-minute drive, and the beautiful Yorkshire Dales National Park is around an hour away by car. The hotel is conveniently located for business travelers as well, with Harrogate Convention Center a 15-minute walk from the hotel. Harrogate Rail Station is around a 10-minute walk away, while Leeds Bradford International Airport is a 30-minute drive.

Rooms

Classically decorated and immaculately clean, with air-conditioning and free Wi-Fi; some with lovely park views

The hotel has a total of 25 guest rooms and suites, including two impressive duplex penthouses with balconies or rooftop terraces. All rooms are spotlessly clean and classically decorated, with soft carpeted floors and muted color schemes. They're elegantly finished, with grand padded headboards crowning king-size beds, each dressed in soft Egyptian cotton linens. Spacious closets and sleek wooden work desks come standard, and modern amenities include flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, tea-making facilities with Taylor's tea bags, Nespresso coffeemakers, music speakers, phones, safes, and ironing facilities. Wi-Fi is also included. Free homemade gingerbread biscuits and bottled water are thoughtful extras that help set this hotel apart from its competition.Front-facing rooms have Juliet balconies and lovely views of Harrogate Stray, while back-facing rooms offer less-exciting views. The only downside to front-facing rooms is traffic noise, though this is minimal. Bathrooms are well-finished, and some are extremely spacious. All have underfloor heating, deep soaking bath tubs, rainfall showerheads, and free L'Occitane toiletries -- rubber ducks add a sweet touch. Penthouse Suites feature TVs in the bathroom, and Superior Rooms add separate walk-in showers. Accessible rooms are also available, with fully-equipped bathrooms and specially modified bedrooms.
