Scene
Family and pet friendly hotel in an elegant 19th-century townhouse
This Grade II-listed, ivy-clad Regency townhouse was built in 1829 and still retains many original features like open fireplaces and arched windows. The interior stays true to classic Georgian style and has a historic and grand ambience. There are elegant drapes dressing the huge windows, classic velvet sofas, and imposing period oil paintings. The front desk is in a small, homey entrance hall adjacent to an ornate staircase which leads to the guest rooms (there is no elevator, which may pose a challenge for anyone with mobility issues). Despite the grand history of the property, there is a cozy and homey feel about the place. It attracts many families, so young children are often found playing in the drawing room, and the hotel is pet friendly too.
Location
On a busy road, but walkable to all of York's sights
Set
on the busy A19 road, this hotel is only a five-minute walk from York's ancient
city walls and the impressive gate at Bootham Bar, which dates back to city’s
origins as a Roman fortress. It is less than 10-minutes’ walk to York Minster
and the city’s charming historic center, which is home to boutiques, cafes, and
restaurants. York Railway Station can be reached in 15 minutes on foot, as
can York's Shambles Market and the York National Railway Museum. Clifford's Tower and the York Castle Museum are also a 15-minute walk from the hotel. Leeds Bradford
Airport is 55-minutes away by car.
Rooms
Historic charms and modern accents
The 36 guest rooms at the Grange Hotel are all individually decorated. Expect to see upholstered furniture with antique lines, handsome hardwood dressers and nightstands, and patterned drapes. More modern rooms have elements like vibrant, all-over patterned wallpaper that matches the drapes -- they look sharp and fresh while retaining their historic elegance. Beds are universally kitted out with comfy white duvets and white linens (here's a fact: The Queen uses the same Hypnos brand mattresses as the hotel). Each room has a flat-screen TV with satellite channels, free Wi-Fi, electric kettles, and a safe. Some have air-conditioning. Most of the rooms are spacious and light. Some of the street-facing rooms pick up a little traffic noise from the road outside, but the majority are quiet. Bathroom style and size varies too. Most have a shower/tub combo and white marble vanities, and all come with luxurious White Company toiletries. Some even add a waterproof TV at the end of the bath.
Features
Good dining options on-site, and free parking and Wi-Fi
The Grange Hotel has two restaurants -- The Ivy Brasserie and The New
York Grill. The Ivy serves modern classic dishes made from fresh, local, and
seasonal ingredients, such as lamb and duck. The New York Grill is a relaxed
and informal brasserie set in the hotel's brick vaulted cellar. It mainly
serves a range of fish dishes and steaks. Breakfast is included in some room
rates, and there are continental or cooked options available, including dishes
like smoked haddock and poached eggs. Portions are large and the food is good quality.
Afternoon tea is also served daily in the Ivy Brasserie. Free parking is available
on-site and Wi-Fi is free throughout the property too. It’s worth noting that
there are no elevators in the building.
