Scene
Historic hotel with period features and a relaxed atmosphere, if starting to look a bit tired
The hotel is a collection of six Grade II-listed buildings nestled in pretty gardens with secluded, peaceful courtyards. Named after Dame Anne Middleton, the wife of the Sheriff of York in 1659, the hotel has plenty of interesting history and attractive period features. One of the most impressive buildings features an original niche sitting above a carved stone doorframe. Other buildings have unique quirks and details, such as original stained-glass windows and Roman masonry. The hub of activity is, of course, in the main building, which has a relaxed atmosphere and traditional feel, with a lovely outdoor terrace and sunny patio. There's also a cozy bar and lounge, enveloped with exposed brick walls and chunky wooden beams. Comfortable leather couches line the area, providing relaxing spots for guests to sip a morning coffee or grab a drink before heading out for the evening. The majority of guests staying during the week are business travelers, with groups and couples more likely to stay on the weekends. The hotel is mostly quiet, but guests should be aware that wedding parties are sometimes noisy.
Location
A five-minute walk from York's city center
Middletons York is situated just outside the city center on Cromwell Road, a few minutes' walk from the banks of the River Ouse. The road is largely residential, though traffic noise can still be an issue in some rooms, as the bustle of the city is just a five-minute walk from the hotel. The main high street is filled with shops, traditional pubs, and restaurants, plus the Coppergate Shopping Center. The Shambles is a 10-minute walk away, home to a lively market and famous 14th-century cobblestone street, lined with old-fashioned bakeries and a (very) popular Harry Potter-themed shop. The Gothic Minster Cathedral is a must-see for anyone visiting York, and a 15-minute walk from the hotel, while York Castle Museum and Clifford's Tower are a five-minute walk. Other popular attractions within walking distance include the JORVIK Viking Center, Museum Gardens, and the York Dungeons. The Grand Opera House is less than 10 minutes from the hotel on foot, while York Racecourse is only a 10-minute drive. York Railway Station is a 10-minute walk from the hotel or five-minute drive, while Leeds Bradford International Airport is around an hour's drive, depending on traffic.
Rooms
Simple, classically decorated rooms with modern touches
The hotel has 62 individually decorated guests rooms finished in a classic country style. Many have a fresh, homey feel, while others feel a tad plain and basic. We spotted some during our visit that were looking a bit tired, like the Standard Double Room. The majority of rooms are decorated in soft creamy tones with carpeted floors, rustic wooden furniture, and floral folding blinds, while double beds are dressed in soft white bedding plus patterned fabrics and accent pillows. Although some rooms are on the small side, larger family-friendly units are available, sleeping up to four people. Views tend to vary, with some windows looking out onto picturesque gardens or secluded courtyards. Keep in mind that many streetside rooms do pick up pedestrian and traffic noise. Standard amenities include flat-screen TVs, electric kettles, phones, and free Wi-Fi, though there's no air-conditioning which makes some rooms feel stuffy, especially in warmer months. Some upgraded rooms add safes, iPod docks, and minibars. Bathrooms are clean, if a little small and sometimes dated, and all include showers (or shower/tub combos), hairdryers, and free toiletries.
