Bottom Line

The 33-suite Mill Creek Hotel is a mid-range condominium hotel in downtown Lake Geneva. Near the shops and restaurants of this charming town, it's also only two blocks away from the lake's marina and many of the hotel's suites have partial lake views. The suites are large, homey, and well-maintained (if not exactly modern) with four-burner stoves, full-sized refrigerators, dishwashers, and most notably, two-person whirlpool baths. The hotel has a small fitness center, as well as a lovely indoor pool and an expansive outdoor sun deck. Wi-Fi is free, and the hotel serves a free continental breakfast each morning. Guests willing to pay a bit more to be right on the water could try Bella Vista Suites.

Full Review

Scene

Fully functional and contemporary, but lacking the charm of the town

The Mill Creek Hotel sits across from a city park and a creek, with the lake in the near distance. In the heart of downtown, the hotel is surrounded by beautiful nature and the charming Main Street shops. Guests can relax on the sun deck surrounded by leafy trees as the creek runs past. The hotel itself, however, lacks this same kind of spirit and beauty. A large building with beige and white siding, it feels more like a condominium complex than a comfortable hotel. The beige and wood continue inside, and there's little gathering space in the lobby, though the tea light candle sticks and plants do add a homey feeling. While fully set up for a business traveler -- with large rooms, a gym, and a meeting room -- Lake Geneva is primarily a town of leisure and the Mill Creek typically draws couples and families looking to vacation.

Location

Near the lake, in the heart of downtown

The Mill Creek Hotel is incredibly well located in downtown Lake Geneva, across from a city park. Just off Main Street, the hotel is within a quick walk of many boutiques and restaurants. The lake itself is in view from the hotel, and the marina is two blocks away. The hotel has free parking, but much to see in town is within walking distance. The property is about 50 minutes from Milwaukee Airport and one hour and 10 minutes from Chicago O'Hare International Airport.

Rooms

Spacious with kitchens and balconies, but lacking character

The hotel is all-suite, and each is spacious, with a moderately sized kitchen, large living room/dining area with fireplace, and a separate bedroom. Kitchens include four-burner electric stoves, full-size refrigerators, microwaves, blenders, coffeemakers, toasters, and cutlery and dishes for at least six people. While the appliances are not new, they remain in good condition. Bedrooms are not overly large, but the living spaces are generous, and sleeper sofas offer the possibility for more people to stay. There's little character to the rooms, though. The carpeting is industrial, and the faded, brown couches and oddly patterned reading chairs leave something to be desired. Bathrooms are reasonably sized and include a whirlpool tub, though some of these tubs could use re-grouting. The Mill Creek also requests that guests not use the whirlpool between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. Each suite has a balcony or patio, and many have at least a partial lake view.

Features

Free Wi-Fi and breakfast, a small gym, and beautiful indoor pool

The Mill Creek provides a free continental breakfast daily and Wi-Fi access to all its guests. There's an indoor pentagonal pool and whirlpool for guests, and while the space isn't very large, its wood walls and large skylight make it one of the prettier spaces in the hotel. The pool overlooks a large patio where guests can lounge and read as the creek water runs past. The gym is small for the number of guests the Mill Creek hosts, but is functional with cardio and weight machines. There is a small, very basic meeting room available for up to 25 people.
