Bottom Line

The Indian Trail Motel is a family-friendly budget property on the edge of downtown Wisconsin Dells with a retro-motel vibe many guests find charming. Though it’s in a quiet wooded area, it's just a short walk to downtown shops, bars, and restaurants. Its 46 rooms are generic and dated -- but clean and tidy -- with microwaves, mini-fridges, and coffeemakers. However, most have old tube TVs.  Amenities include heated indoor and outdoor pools, a whirlpool hot tub, laundry facilities, free Wi-Fi, and a large grassy area with a playground. Rates are attractive, but the property frequently sells out during high season. Travelers may also want to consider one of the similar budget motels in the area, such as the Black Hawk Motel or Ambers Hideaway.

Scene

A classic 1960s motel with a relaxed, family-friendly ambiance

This retro motel is one of the area’s oldest and most charming. The motel building dates back to the early 1960s, but the property has been hosting travelers for much longer. Hotel Scoffield was built in 1870 and is still on the 12-acre property, but it's no longer open to guests. The classic, one-story motel has drive-up parking spaces and patio chairs outside each unit, encouraging neighbors to interact. The modest lobby has wood paneling, natural stone details, and crimson carpeting with gold patterns. Racks of brochures provide details on all the local attractions, and several collectors' plates depicting Native American scenes hang on one wall. Most guests here are vacationing families, some of whom have been returning annually for years.

Location

In a quiet area on the eastern edge of downtown Wisconsin Dells

The Indian Trail Motel is on the eastern edge of downtown Wisconsin Dells in a quiet, wooded area that’s still close to downtown’s shops, bars, and restaurants, a six-minute walk or one-minute drive away. Mitzi’s American Grille, a casual family restaurant serving breakfast, is adjacent to the motel, and offers discounts to motel guests. One of the region’s top nature areas -- the Dells of the Wisconsin River State Natural Area -- is a five-minute drive away. There are plenty of other area attractions within a 10-minute drive of the hotel, including Noah’s Ark water park, Mt. Olympus theme/water park, Pirate’s Cove Adventure Golf and Lake Delton.

Rooms

Generic and dated, but clean rooms with microwaves, mini-fridges, and coffeemakers

Decor at the Indian Trail Motel is generic and dated, but the rooms are clean, tidy, and exude a retro motel ambiance that many guests find charming. Light wood-paneled walls and cheap laminate furniture, some of which shows obvious signs of wear, make up the backdrop. Other decor features include teal carpet and colorful Southwestern-style patterned bedspreads in shades of red, green, and gold. All rooms come equipped with mini-fridges, coffeemakers, and microwaves along with tube TVs. Most come with one king bed or two queens, and a few have whirlpool hot tubs or private decks. There's also a three-bedroom house with two full bathrooms, a full kitchen, and two sleeper sofas. Rooms are generally quiet and overlook the wooded grounds. Bathrooms have formica or Corian-style countertops, shower/tub combos, and standard motel tiling. Hairdryers are provided.

Features

Heated indoor and outdoor pools, whirlpool, laundry room, playground, and free Wi-Fi

This family-friendly, budget motel has some attractive amenities, including heated indoor and outdoor pools plus an indoor whirlpool. There's no food or drink served other than the free coffee in the lobby and snacks from vending machines, but there is a restaurant next door with discounts for motel guests. Guests also receive free passes to the Noah’s Ark water park. Parking is free and usually available directly in front of the rooms. Other features include a guest laundry with a few arcade games, and the lovely wooded grounds have a playground, a volleyball court, a ping-pong table, picnic tables, grills, and a fire pit where the owners have bonfires on Saturday nights during the busy summer season. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the motel.
