Bottom Line

The two-pearl All Star Inn & Suites is a motel-style property with straightforward, exterior entry rooms. They're about as dated as they come, but outfitted with conveniences like microwaves, mini-fridges, and coffeemakers. Suites have full kitchens for the ultimate value. Other family-friendly perks include a game room, a playground, shuffleboard, and volleyball, along with an outdoor pool. There's nowhere to eat though, and no breakfast offered. Its sister property is the nearby Black Hawk Motel, both of which are two of the best bargains around.

Scene

Family-run budget motel with on-site activities

Guests are provided with metal keys at this old budget motel, managed by a family staff who reside in a house on the property. In fact, the small lobby looks like it was once an attached garage, converted into All Star Inn & Suites' main office. It has green painted walls, some living room furnishings, and a healthy number of brochure racks. The two-story motel building is surrounded by a grassy plot with picnic tables, a playground, and lawn games. There's even a basketball hoop off the parking lot. Budget travelers and families who need on-site activities for the kids can find a lot of value here, despite the lack of a restaurant.

Location

Right off the major highway on the edge of downtown

The All Star Inn& Suites is on the edge of Wisconsin Dells' downtown area, within walking distance of shops and restaurants -- a necessary convenience with the lack on-site dining options. A 15-minute walk along Broadway will bring visitors down toward the Wisconsin River and a number of restaurants and bars. A fun place for anyone with a sweet tooth is Root Beer Revelry, where guests can order root beer on tap and browse over 50 brands. For family fun, Chula Vista water park is a six-minute drive away, and Noah’s Ark, the biggest water park in America (and the attraction that brings the majority of families to Wisconsin Dells), is about a 10-minute drive away.

Rooms

Dated rooms with budget decor, microwaves, and mini-fridges

The motel's 56 rooms are simple, clean, and dated with old-fashioned comforters, bare walls, and old wooden furniture. Most rooms are in a typical two-story building with exterior entries, but the carpeted Queen Budget rooms are in separate single-story buildings near the main office. These are the smallest rooms and have minimal furnishings, but all rooms come with microwaves, mini-fridges, and coffeemakers. Free Wi-Fi is standard too, along with 32-inch flat-screen TVs. Upgraded rooms have king-size beds, and some have sitting areas with couches, small desks, and dining tables for two. Suites sleep up to six thanks to second bedrooms and also have full kitchens with ovens, stovetops, and full-size refrigerators. They also have covered patios and can be joined with adjacent rooms to sleep up to 10 people. The bathrooms have average shower/tub combos, though some have been updated with contemporary tile and fixtures. We found that some rooms had stale odors from old carpeting.

Features

Outdoor pool, lawn games, volleyball court, game room, and free water park tickets

Despite the lack of on-site dining options, there are many family-friendly amenities here. The seasonal outdoor pool is heated and has a small sundeck and a splash slide. Outdoor activities include shuffleboard and lawn games, and there's also a basketball hoop as well as a sand volleyball court. Picnic tables are spread across the lawn and there's a covered outdoor patio with metal tables and chairs. Inside, a wood-paneled game room has several '80s arcade games. The motel also provides free tickets to the Chula Vista waterpark and Noah's Ark. Free parking is included. Dogs and cats of all sizes are allowed for a fee (service animals are free).
