Scene

Simple, budget-friendly inn in a great location

The lobby of the Golden Gables Inn is small but homey, with a large, bright front desk area and windows looking out over the property. There's a rack with brochures, local maps, and ski package details right at the front, as well as a small alcove with free coffee and local restaurant menus. Overall, the look is a bit dated -- from the lobby to the rooms -- but guests (mostly couples and families) don't seem to mind considering the budget-friendly rates.

Location

Right on the highway, close to local shopping and dining

The inn is right on Route 302, tucked between a number of other hotels, motels, and bed and breakfasts. While its location is not on the most attractive part of the highway, it is convenient. Although there are a number of other lodging options nearby, the Golden Gables Inn is near the end of the strip, so it's a bit more quiet and less hectic than some of the other similar hotels in the area. There are several restaurants within walking distance, as well as an outlet mall, a 10-minute walk away. Downtown North Conway is a five-minute drive from the hotel, and a number of ski resorts, golf courses, and other outdoor activities can be reached from Golden Gables in less than 30 minutes.

Rooms

Simple standard rooms; suites are a bit more modern

Golden Gables has several types of rooms to choose from, from simple standard rooms with homey, slightly worn furnishings to newer suites with kitchens, whirlpool tubs, and fireplaces. Floral bedspreads and wooden furniture contribute to the hotel's cozy -- but slightly dated -- feel. Most rooms offer a view of the nearby mountains or face out over the property, and almost all come equipped with mini-fridges and microwaves. The large two-bedroom suites contain full kitchens and gas fireplaces, and have more modern furnishings than the other rooms.

Features

Backyard pool and playground, but no dining on-site

Just behind the lobby, the hotel’s backyard has a pool (open seasonally), playground, and plenty of open space for play and relaxation. There's also a trail for snowmobiling just off the property. Although Golden Gables doesn't serve breakfast or have on-site dining, there are plenty of nearby restaurants offering different types of cuisine. Free coffee is served in the lobby, which is particularly convenient as standard rooms don't come with coffeemakers. Families with children are lodged on the first floor to give them better access to outdoor areas and to keep noise levels down in other parts of the property.
