Bottom Line

Bonaventure Resort & Spa is a massive four-pearl property popular with large groups and for events. The three swimming pools, luxe spa, and relatively fast access (via car or free shuttle) to Sawgrass Mills mall also draw families and vacationers. Most of the rooms are spacious with kitchenettes and terraces. Marble bathtubs and flat-screen TVs are nice touches. Some rooms are a bit of a trek from the main building, where Ireland's Steakhouse serves lunch and dinner, and Banyan restaurant does breakfast. The main resort pool has an adjacent cabana bar and cafe. Be warned that private groups can rent this space, limiting access to other hotel guests.

Scene

Sprawling resort

Bonaventure Resort & Spa is built on 23-acres of lush garden grounds. The nearest neighbor is adjacent Bonaventure Country Club -- many of the golf holes and ponds can be viewed from the resort, adding to the green landscape. Geese and ducks wander the grounds, bringing both whimsy and droppings to the scene. Because of all the space at the hotel, it's often booked with huge corporate events, weddings, and trade shows so expect groups of people wearing name tags. Like most of the public spaces here, the lobby is big. A cluster of cream colored sofas and armchairs sits in the center of the room. A tropical aquarium marks the entrance to Zen, the lobby bar. Pollack-inspired abstract art hangs behind the long wood-paneled reception desk. Potted plants add a tropical vibe throughout the space.

Location

In Weston next to Bonaventure Country Club

Bonaventure Resort & Spa is located about a 25-minute drive west of Fort Lauderdale and the beach. The nearest neighbors on the property are the Everglades and Bonaventure Country Club. Sawgrass Mills mall is about a 10-minute drive from the property. The hotel provides a free shuttle there, though a resort fee applies for self-parking at the hotel.

Rooms

Spacious rooms and suites with golf course (or parking lot) views

There are a whopping 501 rooms and suites at Bonaventure Resort & Spa. Accommodations are spread out throughout the resort in several multi-story buildings with adjacent parking lots. For families and groups, the upgrade to a suite may be worth it for a kitchenette and terrace. Bring your own kitchen utensils and equipment, as the resort doesn't provide them. Decor is classic and maybe a little boring. Think: white walls, beige carpet, and dark wooden furniture. Abstract art adds some much needed color to the walls. Marble bathrooms with separate showers and bathtubs are a nice touch. There's plenty of space to unpack toiletries on the long vanity counter. Coffeemakers, Wi-Fi, and flat-screen TVs are standard. Views vary from the picturesque golf course to the parking lot.

Features

Spa, fitness center, three pools, and restaurants -- plus seemingly endless event space

Features at Bonaventure Resort & Spa range from fun to functional. Because the resort is so regularly frequented by trade shows and corporate events there's a 24-hour business center and several meeting spaces with audiovisual equipment and an amphitheater. The 24-hour fitness and nutrition center is impressive. It has spinning classes, personal training services, and a dedicated weight-lifting room. Breakfast isn't included in the cost or resort fee. It's served daily at Banyan restaurant, overlooking the main resort pool. For lunch and dinner, Ireland's Steakhouse does fresh seafood and steaks. Zen Bar in the lobby provides cocktails and small plates. Outside, the cabana bar and cafe serves next to the main pool. aLaya spa and beauty salon provides a wide variety of treatments from grapefruit manicures to anti-aging facials. There's an outdoor whirlpool and swimming pool, plus a sauna and steam for spa-goers. Yoga classes are held near the golf course.
