Bottom Line

The three-pearl Hyatt Place West Palm Beach Downtown is a modern, affordable alternative to Palm Beach’s notoriously sky-high lodging. The relatively small hotel packs lots of essentials including a lively restaurant/bar, free hot gourmet breakfast, and two hot/cold indoor plunge pools. The walkable downtown location is 10 minutes to shopping at City Place and a mile from beaches. All 165 rooms feature spacious, suite-style layouts with sleeper sofas, mini-fridges, flat-screen TVs, and fast, free Wi-Fi. Pets are welcome with a non-refundable deposit. For a bit more money, the nearby Hilton West Palm Beach offers more panache and four-pearl facilities including a resort-style pool.

Scene

Modern, three-pearl chain hotel with a lively restaurant/bar

This Hyatt makes a pleasant first impression with a white facade and circular tower. Indoors, the muted brown-on-beige color palette is punctuated with subtle pops of orange and tasteful modern accent pieces. The wide lobby blends the breakfast area, a towering central lounge, and the restaurant into a single, open-concept space. By day, the latter is bustling with business travelers taking advantage of the free Wi-Fi, while other guests gather around the bar after dark to enjoy a cocktail and the occasional live music. The location near the convention center, university, beaches, and numerous government offices draws a mixed clientele of businesspeople, leisure travelers, and federal workers.

Location

In the heart of downtown West Palm Beach, three blocks from City Place

Even in the heart of the city, the hotel is surprisingly quiet, especially for guests with rooms on the upper floors. The downtown location is convenient to most everything in West Palm Beach. Dozens of restaurants, bars, stores, and services are within a five- to 10-minute walk. City Place -- a large retail/lifestyle hub -- is three blocks from the lobby. Several of South Florida’s most beautiful public beaches are less than a mile east. A free area shuttle provides transportation within a two-mile radius, although the service does not include Palm Beach International (PBI) Airport. However, the 12-minute ride is affordable via Uber or traditional taxi.

Rooms

Spacious suites with mini-fridges and free Wi-Fi, plus optional microwaves and wet bars

Decor in the rooms is as pleasant as the public spaces. The simple furniture, neutral colors, and generic artwork are all typical of many mid-range business-centric hotels. With an all-suite inventory, every room category is spacious and open with separate sleeping, living, and working areas. The list of standard amenities: mini-fridges, flat-screen TVs with media center outlets, and fast, free Wi-Fi -- is excellent. Upgraded room categories are even larger (approximately 800 square feet or 74 square meters), and add wet bars, microwaves, and six-person dining/meeting tables. Most bathrooms are split-design with the sink exposed to the bedroom. The toilet and stand-up shower stall are located in a cramped, separate room. Hairdryers and toiletries are provided. Balconies are unavailable in any category. Most rooms have forgettable street views.

Features

Indoor hot/cold plunge pools and a restaurant/bar with live music

Features are mostly catered to tourists. Just off the lobby, a small room houses two indoor plunge pools -- one hot, one cold -- which are lovely but not much roomier than a large hot tub. A small, bright, 24-hour gym is located in an adjacent room with minimal LifeFitness cardio and strength-training equipment. The open-concept lobby is loosely divided into distinct spaces including traditional dining tables, two lounges, and a breakfast bar. A free hot gourmet breakfast buffet is served daily with a selection of rotating healthy options (cage-free eggs, fresh fruit, and organic oatmeal), plus traditional offerings like waffles and sausage. The full restaurant serves a small menu of cooked-to-order lunch and dinner items, plus has a full bar with nightly live music. A 24-hour grab-and-go counter near the reception desk offers a la carte drinks, snacks, and prepared sandwiches for sale.Several large meeting rooms are available for business clients (for a fee). Wi-Fi is fast and free in every common area. Self-parking is available in a private attached garage with reasonable rates compared to most nearby alternatives. Pets are allowed with a non-refundable deposit based on the length of stay.
