Bottom Line

This upper-middle-range hotel has 50 large, apartment-style suites that were fully renovated in 2009. Modern kitchens and contemporary furnishings make Eldon a comfortable choice in downtown D.C., but it lacks basic amenities, such as a fitness center and room service. Larger downtown competitors like Renaissance, Marriott Marquis, and Embassy Suites have more perks, but Eldon offers larger rooms at significantly lower prices. Most of Washington’s famous monuments and museums are less than 10 minutes away by taxi.

Scene

A convention center hotel with condo-style suites and few extras

Fully renovated in 2009, the Eldon Luxury Suites is housed within a quaint 10-story building built in 1926. With the exception of a small side lobby and a breakfast room on the first floor, there are few places to congregate -- making the property feel more like a low-key apartment complex than a hotel. There is no fitness center, porter service, pool, restaurant, or business center (although a computer station is available in the lobby). A defunct “bar” on the first floor is used exclusively as a dining room for continental breakfast (available for a small fee), and management plans to someday host daily happy hours there. Large, modern suites with fully equipped kitchens are the real draw at Eldon Luxury Suites, and they come at a great value for Washington, D.C.Design-wise, light granite tile and unremarkable contemporary decor are featured throughout the building, and parts of the property still appear unfinished. During our visit an inaccessible rooftop ledge still lacked half its tiles (visible from the Three-Bedroom Penthouse), the lining of a closet door was popping off, unused cable TV jacks protruded from the walls, and raw edges were exposed on some of the woodwork.

Location

On a quiet downtown street near the convention center

Located just north of Penn Quarter in downtown D.C., the Eldon Luxury Suites is situated one block from the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. The neighborhood is full of office buildings and apartment complexes, and plenty of cafes, restaurants, and bars are within walking distance. Major tourist attractions like the National Mall, White House and Smithsonian museums are less than 10 minutes away by taxi. The Mount Vernon Square metro station is a five-minute walk from the hotel, and Metro Center and Gallery Place (major subway hubs) are a 10-minute walk south.

Rooms

Large, condo-style suites feel like private apartments.

Starting at 600 square feet, the rooms at Eldon Luxury Suites are among the largest in Washington, D.C. Completely renovated in 2009, the suites are clean and contemporary. They have polished granite tile floors, custom birchwood walls, and mid-century modern style influences (streamlined furniture, retro fabric prints, mosaic tiling in the kitchens and bathrooms). All feature impressive kitchens with granite countertops, dishwashers, garbage disposals, microwaves, ovens, electric stovetops, stainless steel refrigerators, coffeemakers, and basic cooking utensils. Other highlights include separate bedrooms with plush down beds, living room sofa beds, and upscale marble bathrooms with side massaging shower jets. Most suites have one bedroom, but a handful of two- and three-bedroom units are also available.

Features

Continental breakfast, in-room spa services, and little else

Guests come to Eldon Luxury Suites for the large, reasonably priced rooms -- not the hotel features. Amenities include a basic continental breakfast (for a small fee), pricey outdoor parking lot, lobby computer station with print services, free Wi-Fi, and in-room spa services from an outside company, Relax & Rejuvenate. Concierge services are also available.
