Scene
Contemporary hotel with a full range of amenities
The lobby of the Hilton Garden Inn is modern and bright, with a two-story wall of windows facing the street. A main sitting area features a blue tiled wall, which doubles as a fountain. A steady stream of guests were checking in during our Saturday afternoon visit, and staff members eagerly jumped in to help carry baggage. This 204-room property wins big points for its accessible location (one block from a major subway line and a short drive from Washington’s top tourists spots) and solid amenities. It boasts a modest indoor pool and whirlpool, well-equipped fitness center, guest laundry room, “library” sitting room, and 24-hour business center with three computers and extra office supplies. A spacious lounge bar on the second floor is open in the evenings.Free coffee, tea, and hot cocoa is available in the lobby each morning, and cold drinks and cookies are served in the afternoon.
Location
Convenient location just north of Union Station and Capitol Hill
Hilton Garden Inn is located one block from the NoMa-Gallaudet University Metro station in the up-and-coming NoMa neighborhood (short for North of Massachusetts Avenue). A pharmacy, grocery store, Starbucks, nightclub, and a few cafes are just outside the hotel -- but the area is still somewhat sleepy for D.C.NoMa is one stop north of Union Station (a major transportation hub next to Capitol Hill), and the Red Line easily connects visitors to downtown shopping, business districts, and the hip Dupont Circle neighborhood in under 15 minutes.Major tourist attractions like the White House and National Mall are about 10 minutes away by taxi.
Rooms
Contemporary, but generic, rooms
Rooms feature white bedspreads, brown carpets, off-white walls, and artwork depicting D.C. monuments -- all safe stylistic choices that are easy on the eyes. Modern touches include Kuerig coffeemakers, flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and microwaves. The beds have custom-made mattresses with adjustable firmness controls on each side (although some guests have complained of the beds being squeaky).Rooms come with one king or two queen beds, and some higher units offer views of the U.S. Capitol dome. The largest rooms in the hotel are Junior Suites, which include a second TV and separate sitting area with a coffee table and chairs.
Features
This hotel has all the necessities -- pool, gym, restaurant, store, and business center.
Hilton Garden Inn has an impressive range of amenities for Washington. The third floor is home to a modest indoor pool and whirlpool, fitness center with modern equipment, 24-hour guest laundry room, and 24-hour convenience store with plenty of microwaveable dinners and ice cream. The second floor has an above-average upscale restaurant, Todd Gray’s Watershed, which specializes in Eastern Seaboard cuisine. It’s open for breakfast, dinner, and weekday lunch. Renowned local chef Todd Gray created the menu, and the Ahi tuna we tried during our visit was delicious. A spacious outdoor patio and indoor lounge bar flank the restaurant. Room service is unfortunately only available for dinner.
