Bottom Line

Leisure and business travelers alike choose the three-pearl Hampton Inn Washington, DC-Convention Center for its location and its value. The hotel is within walking distance of the area's major draws -- Washington Convention Center and Verizon Center -- and to several of the city's top sights. All 228 guest rooms and suites are equipped with microwaves, mini-fridges, coffeemakers, safes, and free Wi-Fi, but the decor is ho-hum, dominated by drab neutrals. Top amenities include a full-service restaurant and a bar with daily happy hour, a fitness center, and a small pool. There's also a 24-hour business center and minimart. As an alternative, the nearby three-and-a-half-pearl Embassy Suites Hotel Washington, DC-Convention Center has a larger pool, but expect to pay more.

Scene

A busy hotel for convention delegates and weekend leisure travelers

Occupying a corner of Penn Quarter, this functional Hampton Inn outpost draws a fair amount of business travelers, here primarily for conventions and trade shows at Washington Convention Center. But the property also attracts its share of leisure travelers, especially families with kids in town who arrive on weekends for sporting events and sightseeing. Morning is the busiest time here, when guests line up for the free buffet breakfast that's served in the contemporary restaurant. It quiets down in the evening but sees decent crowds for happy hour and for dinner. There's a pretty landscaped courtyard with patio furniture and flowering bushes at the hotel's entrance and the lobby's modern decor is appealing, but both spaces are just passthroughs for guests heading elsewhere.

Location

In Penn Quarter, close to Washington Convention Center, and to the metro

The Hampton is located in Penn Quarter on the east side of downtownWashington, D.C. The neighborhood is known for its range of diversions -- from entertainment complexes to museums -- plus Washington Convention Center is just a short walk from the hotel. It’s also possible to walk to the Verizon Center, although reaching the National Mall on foot takes about 20 minutes. The immediate area is mostly office buildings and apartments, and is a bit boring, but it's generally quiet. - Five-minute walk to Gallery Place Chinatown Metro station

  • Seven-minute walk to the Washington Convention Center and Verizon Center
  • Eight minutes to Smithsonian American Art Museum via metro
  • Nine minutes to Union Station via metro
  • 11 minutes to National Gallery of Art via metro
  • 14 minutes to National Mall via metro
  • 16 minutes to White House via metro
  • 18 minutes to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport via metro
  • 24 minutes to Washington Monument via metro
  • 26 minutes to Capitol Hill via metro
  • 36 minutes to Lincoln Memorial via metro
  • 45-minute drive to Dulles International Airport

Rooms

Tidy and comfortable, with microwaves, mini-fridges, and coffeemakers, but decor is lackluster

Guest rooms offer enough creature comforts for a pleasant stay -- but decor is a bland melange of neutrals. The prints on walls add a hint of color, but they aren't enough to make the units visually appealing. However, they're spacious and bright, with floor-to-ceiling windows, and are all equipped with mini-fridges, microwaves, coffeemakers, safes, flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi. There are also sizable desks with ergonomic chairs, large armoires and dressers with deep drawers, and beds with high-quality white sheets and duvets. Bathrooms are a tad more attractive, with mustard-yellow wallpaper and mirrors with appealing black-and-white frames. All have wide, granite-topped vanities and shower/tub combos with WaterPik showerheads. Some larger rooms and Suites have separate seating areas with sleeper sofas and coffee tables. Soundproofing is generally good, but don't expect stellar views

Features

On-site restaurant with free breakfast and a bar, plus a gym and an indoor pool/whirlpool

The hotel offers ample amenities that are typical of other Hampton Inns -- and adds a restaurant and bar to the mix, a rarity for the brand. Sixth Street bar + food serves a free breakfast buffet that has eggs and other hot dishes, and guests in a hurry are offered to-go bags on weekdays. Lunch and dinner menus have standard American fare, and the restaurant's bar has a daily happy hour. There's also a 24-hour minimart for sundries, snacks and drinks, and frozen microwavable entrees. Free coffee and tea are on offer throughout the day in the lobby. Wellness features include a gym with up-to-date equipment and a small heated indoor pool and whirlpool. The 24-hour business center offers three computers and a printer. Meeting space is on hand for up to 30 people, and free Wi-Fi throughout are other highlights. Concierge services cover valet laundry and dry cleaning, and there's a laundry room on-site. Parking is valet-only in the hotel’s secure garage. It’s expensive, but rates are typical for downtown D.C.
