The 59-room Trefeddian is a quaint family- and pet-friendly boutique with a privileged location on a sandy beach a short walk from picturesque Aberdyfi. The hotel has a traditional British restaurant, an indoor pool complete with a hot tub, and a small salon with a massage room. However, most guests are here for the hotel’s quiet, relaxing atmosphere and panoramic sea views. Decor is cute but a little dated both in common spaces and rooms, but some units have been renovated and offer a more inspired contemporary style. The hotel also offers three self-catering apartments for up to eight guests. Rates may seem steep for a mid-range hotel, but include a wide array of freebies that add value, including daily five-course dinner, full breakfast, parking, and Wi-Fi.
Scene
A friendly hotel popular among older couples
Housed in a white four-story building with gabled roofs and large windows, the Trefeddian oozes a traditional feel that continues indoors. Burgundy carpets, antique-style furniture, beige flower-printed wallpaper, and ornate golden frames make the lobby classic and cozy, while frequent upkeep keep it looking fresh. The most recent renovation was in 2014, when the main hall, the indoor pool, and all of the fourth-floor rooms got a facelift. Renovated areas have smoky grey wooden floors and clean lines that give them a somewhat more contemporary feel. Non-renovated areas are homey and comfortable, but may look a little dated to some, with striped couches, faded green corduroy armchairs, beige carpeting, and curtains with flower prints in dark hues. Works by local artists decorate the walls, which can make for a bit of a disjointed feel, as the works are in differing styles.
One of the Trefeddian’s best features is its location on a hill overlooking the beach, which allows for stunning panoramic ocean views. To this end, the hotel offers several cozy lounges with large windows and comfy couches where guests can unwind or mingle while enjoying the vistas. Separate adult-only and family-friendly areas make for a relaxed vibe and serene atmosphere, but also provide space for kids to play without disturbing those looking to enjoy a quiet day. On sunny days, guests can be seen taking in the views from the multiple wooden chairs and benches that dot the grounds. Most guests here are older couples, but the hotel is popular with families during school holidays.
Location
On a long, sandy beach a short walk from central Aberdyfi
The hotel is located on a gentle slope that meets a long, sandy beach just outside picturesque Aberdyfi (also known as Aberdovey), on the southernmost tip of the Snowdonia National Park. There are a golf course and a number of hiking and biking trails nearby, but those looking to eat out or check out the local pubs will have to walk into town, which is one mile away. The Aberdovey Golf Club can be seen from the hotel grounds, but the main entrance is a five-minute walk from the Trefeddian. Scenic Tal-y-llyn Lake and the Cadair Idris mountain are a 25- to 35-minute drive away. Aberdovey train station can be reached in five minutes by car.
Rooms
Classic and cozy, but a little dated; renovated rooms have contemporary beachy decor
The hotel has 59 rooms, many offering panoramic ocean and golf course views. Most rooms have classic, somewhat bland decor, with basic bedspreads in dark green or beige hues, beige carpeting, flower-printed curtains, and wallpaper with pale grey and beige stripes. The overall feel of rooms is cozy, traditional, and comfortable, but some guests may find the style a little dated. Rooms on the fourth floor were renovated in late 2014 and have wooden floors, dark textured accent walls, duvets, white wooden furniture, bed runners with matching pillows, and dark blue curtains. All units have flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and electric kettles with free tea and coffee. Standard rooms are a little tight, but top-floor units can sleep up to two adults and three kids. For larger families or groups, the hotel offers three self-catering apartments, all equipped with living areas, full kitchens with dishwashers and cooktops, and outdoor space. Apartment guests are given full access to the hotel’s facilities. Many rooms have private balconies. Dogs are not allowed in fourth-floor Superior Rooms.
Features
An indoor pool, a massage room, a restaurant, a nine-hole putting green, and game rooms
The hotel is located a short walk from a lovely sandy beach, but the indoor pool and hot tub are a hit among kids and adults on rainy and colder days. Those looking to stay active can book the all-weather tennis court or play a round of golf at the on-site nine-hole putting green; tennis and golf gear can be borrowed free of charge at the hotel. The Trefeddian also has several game rooms -- including separate adult-only and kid-friendly spaces -- a treatment room offering massages and salon services, and a traditional British restaurant with ocean views. Great freebies included in all room rates include Wi-Fi throughout the property, outdoor parking, and daily breakfast and five-course dinner. The property can provide babysitting on request, is pet-friendly, and has many accessible areas.
